G'day everyone,

Would like to get some advice from anyone that has removed an RB26 from a R32 GTR.

Long story short, a mate with a R32 GTR has got problems with a bearing (we think) so the motor has to come out so we can strip it down and find out exactly what it is. Other tests have been done, and we're pretty sure it's a bearing :D

Sooo, this Saturday we'll be removing the motor.

Is there any little tricks that would help us? Looking at it, it's going to be easier to drop the motor out the bottom with the gearbox assembly still attached, then remove the box assembly while it's on the ground etc...

Dropping it out the bottom, will we need to take the plenum or turbo's off?? Can we just take the turbo's off? The plemun looks like a pain in the butt to remove.....

We've got the workshop manual which we intend on using, but you know how it goes, there's always little trick that can save you hours in frustration.

Any help at all would be great.

Jayson

Hey Jayson

From my exp in taking out engines its probably easier to take it out from the top.

take off the ex manifold and turbos, undo the fmic piping, take out radiator, undo the aircon pump, take out the coil packs or wiring, undo the gearbox, undo the engine mounts then lift it out.

anything ive missed?

also jayson how easy is it to strip down a motor as ill be doing this on the rb30 block i have

Cool,

That's what we've done in the past, but the thing that makes me think about dropping it down is the tranfercase/4WD and front diff stuff, plus it takes a fair wack of time just getting the gearbox off the motor simply cause of the lack of space :D

Hmmm, we might have to take a good look at it etc...

Stripping down a motor is pretty easy once you've got the right tools (for the head etc..).

But you've got to make sure you take the head off correctly so it doesn't warp. Also have a big clean bench so you can lay everything out in the correct order (pistons, bearings, journals etc..), and if you think you may not remember how it goes back on, take a photo of it :)

J

yeah we took mine out thru the top as well, the left front drive shaft pops out easy, the right front is a real bastard. I think the hardest part was the bolts on the starter motor.

took about 4 hours in the end.

ive talked to phile from skyline perfromance he has just done two r32 gtr's in succession and he can do it in about 4 hours now but the first wont be that fast... what id recommend is undoing everything, then undo engine mounts...then rocking the front of the engine up and the take the gearbox off then pull the motor out.... it is so bloody hard to get them out in one piece man....

an engine jack? I dunno what its called but I've seen pics of RB26's being supported by this hydraulic jack looking thing with a long arm.

or you could do it the same way we did my mates V6, a big wooden stump and a 4 small jack stands

jackstands are the way to go resting the front crossmember on them and one for the gearbox.you can leave the turbos and inlet plenum on doing it this way.easier to remove gearbox and that bloody"starter motor".

perhaps off topic question: how do you raise a car without a hoist so you can use jackstands to hold up the engine and gearbox??

Also how much easier is it to do the wiring for the engine while under the car, and from above?

sorry did not realise he/she did not have access to a hoist

also much easier to wire up and plug in to loom

yeah thats what we used, engine hoist to lift it out the top. they're pretty snazzy, also used it to lift the car when the cheap sh1t floor jack broke

    • List all of your mods. It sounds like an aftermarket ECU hitting rev limiter. Like a valet mode, or a cold rpm limiter?
    • @Kapr Haha yeah thats the one. I missed that you had a built up engine, I wouldn't want to run it on there either then. It was good in my situation just to replace the original turbo on a stock engine. @MBS206Yep definitely not a replacement for anything name brand
    • You are selling this? I have never bought something from marketplace...i dont know if i trust that enough. And the price is little bit "too" good...

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
