Thanks for the replies guys.

So what's the concenus?? From the top, or drop it down??

We have two 3 tonne hoists we can use, along with a 3 tonne jack and the usual pissy 1.5 tonne jacks... Also heaps of axel stands etc...

We did a GT4 by dropping it down, and lifting the car up on an angle (have a look at the pic) !!! Took about 4 hours, but with the GTR I'm worried about clearances of the turbo's and plenum if we drop it down.

Ideally, we'd like to keep as much of the bolt-on bits on the motor until the motor is out of the car. Much easier to work on when it's sitting by itself :cheers:

jay - goto one of ur local auto places n buy a engine crane and an engine stand if u dont have these. u should b able to keep the intake plenum and the ex manifold and turbos on then. just make sure u undo the exhaust

Don't kennards hire em out? might be cheaper. I'd rather work under a car than over it. Also as troy pointed out in an earlier thread, you'd run the risk of hitting the engine against other parts of the car if you use an engine hoist with a chain setup like in the pic above.

I'd prefer to use a hoist and drop the stuff down onto a trolley and wheel the whole thing out from under the car, reassemble everything then lower the car onto the trolley and fit everything else. But for me, lack of hoist in the house tho :cheers:

Well this is how one guy did it... Looks fairly precarious to me.

But better than jacking the car up some weird way IMHO

eeek, gearbox was still on? we left mine in the car....

it was a bit of work but not really too tricky to take out the top, the main problem we had was the starter motor bolts, and one engine mount was damaged and kept getting in the way. Left turbs, manifold, plenum etc on.

LOL - yepp, the front pipes will be one of the first things we'll take off :D

We've got two engine cranes, both will be there, along with the engine stand, but not sure if we'll use the engine stand, not sure of the load rating on the stand (the RB's are pretty long)....

Well that pic shows that the turbo's are still on the motor along with the plenum, so hopefully it all can come out as one (except for the power steering pump maybe.... :cheers:

air con condensor came off mine first too, but we are chucking that anyway....pretty sure the power steering pump was still on?

Heh it is to protect the guilty, see fuel surge tank thread :)

I wonder if you can convince a garage to let u use their hoist to seperate your engine and car and then remove both from their premises.

Or like ylwgtr find a mate/relative with a shop and use his equipment :)

Hahaha, not sure about the chop chop way :) But the car is best towed cause we don't want to take the risk of further damage etc..... Don't want to totally root the crank !! :)

Well, I've have a chat to the boys and see what they say, looks like we could go either way, but if we go out the top I'd prefer to take the box off first...

I can see it now, hoist swings the motor the wrong way and ends up through the windscreen !!

Do'h better run, big brother uncut is back on !!!

Jayson we just pulled out another engine tonite with gearbox still intact - was a ca18de.

didnt have a engine crane as ours was borrowed so we used the hoist instead :( good ol bar across it in up she goes

i couldnt c y u cant leave the gearbox on as its a pain to get the top bolts out of the housing

anyways let us know how u go

Cool, the only thing that we're worried about is the clearance on the turbo's/plenum and the 4WD stuff, but it should all work out..

I't be great to drop or lift the motor out with the box attached cause that top starter motor bolt took us about 30-45mins last time !! So if we can rip the lot out in one go it'll be much faster :(

But leave gearbox on... watch power steer hoses near "K" rail when replacing and a tip if not allready mentioned.

Jack the rear of the car as high as possible, that provides exit angle for GB. its best if this is done with big floor jack, (jack stands for safety) I have done em with GB off and it is a pain... top bell housing bolts and starter motor bolts time saved is enough to convince me.

I'll have to convince them to bring it out the top - either way I'll be happy not to worry about that damn top start motor bolt :D

We have a high lift 5 tonne jack, I think it can lift upto about thigh height !! Hopefully that will be enough to get the motor out with the box attached.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
