Is It Just Me Or Have Insurance Premiums Skyrocketed?

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about getting another GTR and have been trying to get some insurance estimates. At the moment it seems Shannons and Just Cars are the only ones willing to insure imports (haven't tried Lumley SV yet). When I had my R33 several years ago (albeit I was living in Vic at the time), a comprehensive policy with Shannons was $1600ish per year for a Rating 1 driver, and a R34 wasn't that much more. I recently got a quote for a Vspec 1 R34 GTR from shannons and they wanted $4.7K!!! Just Cars were offering $3k+. This is for a 29 yo male, no traffic infirngements within the last three years, one theft claim (car was recovered but written off), living in Parra (yes I know that adds a bit to the premium).

What sort of insurance premiums are you GTR owners paying and with whom are you paying it? I want to know if it's just me that is facing ludicrous premiums or if it's a common thing these days?

isnt it 30 not 25 now for the ridiculous prices?

Dunno mate, you might be right. If that's the case, and knowing my luck, the magic age will be 35 once I turn 30 next year. I just can't believe some of the quotes and am looking to get an idea of what other NSW members/owners are paying.

Anywho, the amount i actually pay and my quoted amount on the website is completely different.

Found this to be true however for me it was the other way around (website was cheaper than phone)

r34gt rvspec full comp with just car ~$2100, $2000excess -24yrs old (now 25, but insured before my bday). no accident/theft/claim history

it was ~$2300 last year when i was 23.

this was for forster/newcaste, so 3k sounds about right for parra.

I guess I'll just have to suck it up and deal with the high premium when the times comes :-(

doesnt matter what these guys pay.

unless they live at same address, same driving history, same car, value, usage, claims history, multi vehicle discounts, other discounts, garaging etc etc blah blah if the price wasnt the same id ask around,

however as everyone is different, everyones premium will be different.

plus its a GTR.

if you had a pre 80s classic with Shannons then you'd be laughing, but an import/GTR in western Sydney - bend over!!

Same for area's down here in Melb. Just giving them a different post code can see premiums alter by $300 without a drama at all.

Also a lot of VIC's have noticed a premium hike in response to hailstorms in the past 12 months (the excuse we are being fed)... But then that's what we pay insurance companies for in the first place so i cannot see how it's a legitimate reason. My premium went up by $250 overnight!

Any major disasters in NSW they can attribute it to? Perhaps alien abductions?

Differences in premiums due to different geographical locations is one thing, but a near-doubling of premiums in the space of a couple of years is another. I'm thinking that the reduced prices of imports means more hoons can afford them, write them off and subsequently make an insurance claim? That's probably behind the increased premiums.

Anyway it just seemed odd that premiums had gone up a considerable amount since I last had a GTR.

nah, its more cause Australian companies are crooks and monopolise industries and the gov lets it happen

I bet the majority of them are underwritten by the same big 4-5 global co's anyway.

    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
