Hi, I'm new to the skyline scene, I recently bought an r32 gtr for daily street use. And I'm looking at fitting a torque controller. I've been looking at the hks kansai one from rhdjap and other places but I haven't seen much feedback from people that have them. I haven't realy seen many that look worth while. I'm looking at spending up to maybe $500 and just wondering what's out there that people are using/ have used and are happy with. The main goal is to be able to switch 2wd-awd and handle well on turns hills track etc. to get some more grip down.

Thanks guys

I have used the Ruzic (Mountainrunner) controller and it was really good but if your main gaol is the ability to switch 2wd-Awd, then look at "Full Race"

If your main goal was switching 2wd-4wd then you would put a switch...on the 4wd pump

Is it possible to run this mountain runner and a 2wd 4wd switch? And where's the best place to buy one ? Thanks guys

Mountain runner is the guy who makes the controller, looks like this: http://www.timeattack.com.au/content/view/30/65/ (old version) or the new version: http://www.topsecret.net.au/ruzicengineering/ATTESA_Controller_II.html . I actually have the old one myself, but never got around to installing it.

4WD controllers are only plugged into the G sensors (located under the centre console near the gearstick), and 2WD/4WD switches basically just open or close the circuit on the 4WD fuse in the driver's fusebox. So it is possible to run both.

4WD fuse trick (aka what the 2WD/4WD switches do) only works on R32s. It will overheat and damage the transfer case on R33s and R34s because of 5% or so preload on the transfer case at all times (where R32's have 0% preload)

If that were the case, wouldn't it wear the clutch packs out while driving around normally and no extra torque applied?

Sure, you'll get some preloading there and have 2% applied to the front wheels at all times but switched off or on, you've still got that amount applied.

The oil is still pumped around for cooling and the clutch packs are still lubricated.

I saw a ruzic torque controller brand new for sale for 450 for the gen 1 I think. Is this a reasonable price, and how many different models are there and is the first gen ok for what I'm after?

I was under the impression with the 4WD fuse pulled, the pump isn't powered and the oil doesn't circulate

The oil for the transfer case is circulated by an oil pump attached to the front of the transfer case that is driven off the gearbox output shaft - (the shaft continues through the transfer case and clutch hub to the drivehaft), so oil is pumped through the transfer case oiling system any time the rear wheels are turning. (because I'm crap at word here's a pic - the oil pump is on the left) The actuation for the hydraulic clutches is a separate hydraulic system- which is the system affected by the pulling of the fuse.

When I asked UAS about the updated Ruzic controller before it was available they estimated it would cost about the same as the old one (600ish) without the GPS system which was 200ish extra. They also mentioned it would probably include a drag full time AWD function, but don't know if that's the case. Apparently the newer one has better processing speed than the old one, and looks like you can run more maps. Depends what you're going to do with it- if you get the updated one you can buy the GPS system later if you want to do your own track timing etc

I've just been thru all this and the R32/33/34 gtr systems are pretty much the same except for the computer, and it is the computer that sorts out the pre-load through the solenoid, aside from the "Fail safe" solenoid and the A-LSD. the systems are identical...

therefore just like with the R32 GTR if the system is controlled and doesn't prime/pre-load they are all the same and in RWD. there are already a couple of threads on that.....

also not all controllers are just piggy backed on the factory g-sensor, ie the "Full Race" one which for $500 has its own faster computer and digital G-sensor, so the only thing the facytory Attesa computer does is look after ABS.

And for any GTR, 32/33/34 has RWD at the flick of a switch, with zero pressure at the transfer, but in auto mode has the R32 the same as R33/34 with pre/load so no delay in 4WD.

so much hear/say, and so few actual know how the systems work..

The Ruzic controllers are magic. Such a high quality product and local support if required. Fully tunable maps and easy to install.

He's been making them for over 6 years and I'm yet to hear of a failure.

The WTAC R34 GTR owned by Mark Berry and Russell Newman was equipped with a fully custom version that learned the track via gps and you could tune the entire track into the controller and tweak every part of every corner with multiple GSensors all inputting simultaneously.

Everything Ruzic does is impressive to say the least. If you want a price on a current model I'll hit him up on Sunday when I'm speaking to him again. He's currently building a logging system for us that makes the racepak logger look like a fucikng abacus.

    • Hang on. Let me get this straight. The desire is to have coilovers, BC in particular, to be MORE comfortable on Sydney roads than stock suspension? Well, that's obviously not right. BCs have crude damping design at the very best, and typically hard spring rates. BC stands for Billy Cart. And then, the desire is to put in some shitty old worn out stockers, to get it blue slipped and then put the BCs back in? And then.....what? Not worry about getting pulled up by the Plod? Because you seem to have raised a worry about paying for engineering (which actually does solve all your legality problems) and still getting pulled up.... but the only problem there is that if/when that happens you have to show your paperwork at the inspection station. Whereas, if you just swap in borrowed shitty old stockers to get it slipped now, and then you get defected in the future, you have to go find more shitty old stockers then too. You course of action looks like this set of options: Buy brand new stock type dampers, and springs. probably cost a bit more than $1k all up, but will last for the remaining life of the car. Put them in, pass inspection, drive on them forever more. Hell, they could even be really nice Bilsteins and Kings or other lower&stiffer springs if you wanted. Get the car engineered as is. ~$1k. Buy new Shockworks coilvers (or MCA) and also pay for engineering. You're spending a lot more here. But these will be the best things that you could drive around on.
    • Might be worthwhile hitting up Facebook's groups, I know most of them contain terrible people and scammers - however you might be able to find someone that's in Sydney with factory suspension you could purchase and/or hire. Just do not send any form of money anywhere, in person cash only.
    • Thanks @Duncan Ride height is fine. I think it's almost stock tbh. Happy to share a pic. I don't actually have a regular mechanic as haven't lived in Sydney too long. Could you or anyone recommend any shops in Sydney?
    • You just need a different blue slip shop (preferably one you regularly use as a mechanic), and make sure the coil overs are as close as possible to standard height
    • yeah the sugar refining companies were pushing for the same in Oz originally, all fuels were going to have 10% ethanol to make them "cheaper" (noting, that the loss in l/100 might be greater than the decrease in price). I guess they won that fight in Canadia
