Take it from me. My first performance car was a WRX (GDA) which I chose over the GC8 due to the better chassis. If I had my time again, I would've gone with an Evo 7-9.

WRX's have too many weak points and are too difficult to get power from.

I spent a fortune on mine and only netted 220kw at all four with 19psi of boost.

I decided to go WRX over Evo as the symmetrical AWD appealed to me for weight distribution. I didn't like the E-W mounting of the Evo.

Had my WRX for 2 years and hung out with the Evo Oz crew (Rexnet guys aren't as social). Had a heap of fun and found out just how much better the Evo is.

Normally I'd scoff at electronic aids but the Evo's AYC, ASC, ACD & S-AWC make it unbeatable in the twisties (which was what I was into at the time).

There appears to be more aftermarket support for the Evo too so upgrades are easier to find and cheaper to buy in comparison to the WRX.

Do some research on Evo Oz. I've learnt that the 5MT's are stronger than the 6MT's (opposite to WRX) and the AYC/ACD pump is a bitch to bleed!

I still have a soft spot for WRX's, must be that boxer note but probably wouldn't buy another.

im second guessing the WRX seems a lot of you have lost out finanically by owning one. It worse

enough the added costs that comes with performance cars such as insurance then dealing with breaking

parts such as gearboxes, maybe the evo is a better choice will give it more

research.

Unless you have massive cash to waste. I wouldn't waste my time with a wrx. A mate of mine spent 10k on a wrx and the thing was lucky to run a 13.5 I havnt spent 10k on my gtr and she will b ready for a 10 when I fly back home from work this time : D

Interior is far worse on an evo then a wrx, looks like full granma spec intertior with bucket seats added, dont know what they where thinking with the dash design :yucky: .

All the 2.0 wrx's suffer from lag with anything bigger then the stock turbo, the weight of a gd is like 1350kg plus, sti is around 1450kg, its way way to heavy for a little 2.0. Thats why the gc8's are so popular, can get them under 1100kg pretty easy.

I've had 3 Subbies.. all RS Liberties.

Never had any broken boxes or shafts etc.

Having said that, none of them got sticky tyres or ran anything other than a stock turbo.

Stock or close to it and they keep going and going.

start searching for power and they break.

Evo 7's are STI money or less and are so much better a car.

Go the Evo, you don't need to do anymore research,

Ppl who have owned them have told you not to buy one.

Yes the exhaust note sounds great, yes they go hard... But at a cost.... Usually higher then other cars. It true squeezing HP out of them can cost a fair bit and indent the easiest.

End of the day it's your choice.

Lol! What do u want... A performance car or a luxury interior?

Who cares what the interior looks like (race cars don't have an interior at all!) that's the last thing I care about! If you want a luxury interior buy a BMW or Lexus. Lol :-)

Lol who said anything about wanting luxury?

I was talking about the fact that the design looks like it came from the 380 or a commodore, IMO its doesnt fit the feel of the car at all, they could of atleast gave it a proper looking dash.

Hi mate,

I bought a 2000 Liberty wagon, and transplanted an entire GC8 STI into it. Mine was running a VF23 turbo, STi TMIC (With co2 system) , 550cc injectors, 3" zorst, fuel pump and bigger intake, and on 21psi on stock internals, and made just over 200kwatw.

If you do go for a Subaru, spend the extra dosh and get an STi. If I had my time again, I would go for something like a 2006 model, with the EJ257 motor. 2.5L, closed deck block, forgies from factory, and able to handle over 20psi with very little mods.

A good mate of mine is selling a GC8 Club Spec Evo 4 at the moment. That has a 2.5L closed deck EJ257, with with Version 3 heads, a PWR W2A cooler kit, with co2 spray, full haltech setup, 6 speed DCCD gearbox and R180 rear end, with cucso tarmac cetnre and rear LSD, Cosworth intake, a TD0620G with 8cm housing, Cosworth camshafts, 650cc injectors, brembos, coilovers, and water methanol injection, and he is pushing about 280kw atw, on 23psi.

TL;DR - It costs big money to get good power.

Cheers,

Shazza

when you're up it, all you see is the tacho so who cares?

and if you have an EVO, you are always up it... otherwise you prefer the company of Men.. nowatumsayin?

I thought most queers had evo's :action-smiley-069: , hence the queer looking dash.

In all seriousness Im just picking on one minor thing, there great cars but I would definently prefer the interior of a GTR or an STI.

Im with you mate...I love the design of the R33's inside.

Glad I stumbled across this thread, I have always wanted a skyline, particularly an R32 GTR as its more around my price range, however as of late that EVO bug has been creeping up on me and i've just about swayed towards buying one.. heard too many good things about them, also heard many good things about the Godzilla ofcourse but the thing that turns me off is the maintenance and I just cant justify dropping so much money + money on maintenance on a 20 year old car.. have to be a real enthusiast unless you want one thats been beat to death for around 13k which will pop within half a year.. as for the WRX they sound awesome they go good but they've never gotten me me the way the evo does.. also hard to find a rex thats been babied and looked after, a lot of dickheads out there think because its their daily they can treat it how ever they want

Don't think ive ever sat in the back of the 33...provably rego as 2 seater come renewal anyways. Passengers are annoying.

I meant the back end of them. Ugliest back of the lot by a mileeeee.... However the front is sexy as fk

haha i spose the world would be boring if we all though the same, I cant stand the flat square back of the 34, the 32 is much nicer but still no 33 :)

    • Great work! Give it a clean up with some Emery paper, and I'd run a thread die over the threads too to clean them up. It will make reinstall much easier, and also life easier for the next time it needs to come out.
    • I'm not a fan of high humidity, it's one reason I don't mind being further inland out Ipswich, except the last 3 odd years, the drought broke, and it won't stop raining, which is making the humidity nearly unbearable when the rains are in during summer! For me, my body hates the cold, once the cold sets into my body, I'm totally screwed. I end up with severe muscle spasm in my back/shoulder muscles, and it feels like someone is trying to tear the muscles out. I have no issues with it getting stupid hot, so long as the humidity goes away. So the last 3 years as above, have been woeful! Ha ha. However, June 1st, and I'm only just converting from shorts and a tee, to long pants and a t shirt. And that's mainly as it's a bit wet and miserable and I wanted to work on a car.
    • I much prefer colder weather to hot weather, and especially prefer cold to hot and humid, Goulburn does gets pretty warm in the hotter months, but, I've found the humidity there is not as painful as even Sydney, the humidity up north is to oppressing for this old rooster  In saying this, it does get rather "nippy" in Goulburn for early morning, late in the evening walks, but nothing that a layer or two, some thermal gloves, and a beanie doesn't fix to make it an enjoyable experience, which is much more bearable to me than the oppression of heat and humidity,  especially at night when your trying to sleep If I recall correctly, a "wise man" once said that the "Southern Tablelands" was gods country, and I will not argue that point with him for the fear of a "permaban" LOL In car part related news: My intake is currently in Botany getting processed for the last leg of its shipping journey to my door
    • Had a go at the stuck crush tube this afternoon. Tried things like grips and a chain wrench first but wouldn't just twist straight off. So got to work with a drill. Started small and kept a depth stop on to make sure I didn't drill into the bolt. Made a line of drill holes all the way up and enlarged them. Then a combination of chisel and Dremel to split it all the way up. Levered the split to get oil in there and eventually it gave a bit while levering. Worked it back and forth with loads more oil till it was spinning freely, then with grips I could work it downwards and off. And no significant damage to the bolt (not by me anyway - just the 27 years of rust)
    • Well, I'm tired. I'm tired because about 4PM yesterday, before today's appointment someone immediately bought my bumper. They couldn't get it any other day as they're on the way back to NSW. So I had to do that big GTR conversion I had been planning. Unfortunately, the information on SAU about what you need and how this is done is incomplete. So what should be a simple bolt on affair, yeah, it's not. Did you know if you use all GTR items the bonnet won't close? This little manuever sent me into about 1am the night before trying to dodge a way to get it closed. I will have to revisit this in the next few days  - or maybe not, I may let a body shop figure it out. It all needs to come up and my motivation to pull the bumper off is low. It also seems to hit things in the bay where the GTT bonnet didn't. Yes I used 100% new OEM GTR items. Today, I had the joy of driving to the dyno looking like this: Given I had roughed in the fuel and given sensible but pretty conservative timing, I didn't really bet on having the car drive out any real difference than when it drove in. Sadly due to a miscommunication and laptop fun and games (and almost bricking the dongle, prayers and firmware updates indeed), I ended up using HP Tuner credits to licence the car that was already licenced. So in the end my laptop was used. It turns out my butt dyno is still well calibrated after all this time. The 325kw was on 74% Ethanol, the 313kw line was on 98. The other line is the 'before' line which was 281kw. While the numbers are pretty low, they're pretty in line with what you'd expect. Even if US dynos bump the whole result up about 50KW, gaining 10-15% is similar gains.  The curve of the cam is pretty much spot on with what was discussed as well. All this said, it still feels bad to not see the number you secretly want to see. Even if the car drove great beforehand, and I knew pretty confidently the car would drive out much the same way it drove in due to the nature of a wellish dialled in LS1 not gaining much if anything at all from being tuned from where it was. As expected, the car isn't particularly sensitive to running it at anywhere between 12.0 and 13.0 - And the initial timing at 20deg and 12.0 made 308KW. So 3 degrees of timing, and leaning it out to 12.7 for 5kw, anything above stopped giving any benefit until E85 (which has an additional 2 deg as before). Car itself behaved entirely fine. I found out that 100C = 1.15V! IAT at about 7pm was 19C. I might mess with the bonnet mounting.. but given the REO NEEDS TO BE CHOPPED TO FIT A GTR BAR this is possibly something I may leave gathering (more) dust until it returns to paint jail.
