Yesterday I managed to break my 3rd gear synchro in my R34 GTR Getrag 6 Speed.

Now I know that Nissan have not provided any spares to be available with the Getrag box. But the cost of a whole new gear-box is just frightening. (Was just quoted $14,500+GST+Fitting)

Does anyone know of where I could possibly source parts for these boxes? I have heard that possibly the parts are interchangable with the 6 speed made for the BMW - can anyone confirm this?

I know this is the 3rd R34 with broken synchro problems (2 3rd gears and one 4th gear) that I have heard of so surely they haven't all had to replace the whole gearbox!

Any help you be appreciated.

Not good news mate!

Are you saying Nissan cant supply any components for 6 speed box or Nissan Aust dont stock them? The earlier 5 speed boxes are getrag and all parts are still available through Nissan.

Andrew,

Just got of the phone with a mate who's just shipped in a sh!tload of parts. He doesn't have a 6speed, but has around 10GTR 5speed boxes @$1200, which we think should bolt on directly? Did you speak to ICE, or Dean?? I'm wondering if the parts from the GTR 5 Speed boxes fit the Getrag boxes, maybe you could do a swap. Ultimately I think Leewah has your answer in a reply to one of my question in another thread all about gearboxes.. he recommended speaking to Frank Modena of Modena Engineering in Melbourne.

Yeah I know I can put a 33 box in but Id rather not go to a 5 speed.

But Nissan Japan did not have spares available for the 6 speed getrag box. I believe that there are some companies in Japan that have made spares for this box but I dont know who they are! So I was hoping that someone might know.

Been to Ice - they are looking further as well.

Spoke to Dean - doesnt have one but can get boxes for around the $4K mark. Troy (ylwgtr) has a mate with a secondhand box for sale too apparently. But Ideally I'd like to fix it - even strengthen it whilst at it cause apparently this is a common weakness.

Yeah, dont go to the 5 speed you'll have the added hassle of changing the diff ratio etc.

I'm told holden now have a 6 speed getrag that is going behind the new quad cam v6. I dont know if the parts are interchangable with the r34 box but it may be worth looking into along with the bmw getrag's you mentioned earlier.

You're right . Now I'm frightened. I've always thought that going from 2nd to 3rd in my car isn't as smooth as all other gear changes. Oh well.

Good luck on your search mate

Alan

Ive heard rumors the 6 speed Getrag in the GTR is almost identical to the Supra Getrag box, witht he addition of a transfer case. I dont know how true this is or not, maybe see if you can find out, and then see if any of the supra guys know where to get bits from?

Read about pfitzner or something like it in one of the HPI mags. Just checked out their website and they say they will cut gears to you spec. I dont know how cost effective it will be but it couldnt hurt to call them. I seem to remember them offering a full gear set for GTRs and they said that most people are willing to break several gear boxes before they final see the advantage in buying a dog box.

Ok - I broke it on a track day at Sandown. Not sure if it was done going from 2nd - 3rd on the main straight or from 5th-3rd at turn one. Didnt pay attention to when it first happened as it feels the same as if you just try and change gears without pushing the clutch all the way in which we have all done - so initially I just thought thats what Id done. It was only after a lap or so that I realised it wasn't me not clutching proplerly but infact the synchro was farked.

Anyways - thanks for all the help. Im not going to go back to a 5 speed. I dont really want to put a secondhand box in at as I have also found a few people with pulled apart boxes who would be willing to sell parts - but they have also turned out to have busted or already missing 3rd gear synchros!

So I now have a quote to get the parts machined up by a local mod at a much better price then even a secondhand whole box - but am also getting quotes from both pfitzner and holinger on strengthend dog rings.

BTW - clarkey - dont panic mate - the cost of the 33 gearbox its very very tame in comparison. (Stupid R34 GTR's)

  • 7 months later...

I think The WHITEs that came 2 outright in Targa Tas in there GTR made there own syncros ... you can Not buy all the parts in a BMW Getrag 6 speed as they only list certain parts in the box 4 sale .. other wise a exchange box from Bmw .. Getrag rate there boxes as the Maximum inputshaft torque in newton meters the box can take safely .. So not all Gearboxs with the Name Getrag are the Same ..

hey snowy y dont u go a hks 6 speed fron japan they are preety cheap compared the price you where quoted form nissan for the box

cya mate

no he didnt.

He got the stock one rebuilt/fixed.

he is in Canada for a few more days yet

The R34 box is identiacal to the Supra TT (minus the transfer case obviously). All my parts came from Toyota. And I did all the synchro's, 2nd, 3rd, 4th gears, the 1st-2nd and 3-4th shift drums plus the slide sleeves.

Most parts are readily available from Toyota Australia. Troy (ylwgtr2) recently rebuilt his box himself and is helping me (aka - doing 99%) of mine currently. Well at least I hope he is. LOL.

    • You Gregged a whole racetrack!?
    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
