Hey guys, just want to start of by saying this is by far the most informative forum with the friendliest bunch of people I have ever participated in.. Day by day I learn more and more

I am going to be in the market for an evo 7,8 quiet shortly, I would rather a private sale as the dealerships have the prices hiked up along with all the other suspicious activity, the issue is that unless it was a private import or though a private broker then a private sale would impose the same problems..

Things I have read about are how to understand the grading papers, always ask for the export/dereg papers, if there are none walk away, have also heard of a service you can pay for and they retrieve all the original information from japan.. painted chassis rails? What are the odds of actually attaining the export/dereg papers from a private sale? quiet low I suppose as the general public wouldnt be aware enough to ask for them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am quiet stumped with spending hard earned money on a previous wreck or high km wound back import while some dealer sits in his office chair reaping the dodgy profit and laughing about it with his friends...

Cheers, Bill

I am currently importing through Iron Chef Imports.

And honestly...... I am very happy. I looked in aus for a number of months for the 'right' car and when decided to import they where the most helpful and informative of the importers I spoke to (I did not speak to all, so no offence to anyone)

They are also friendly, did not try to feed be B/S and they put up with my constant annoying questions. They have been helpful along each stage of the process (and available on weekend :domokun: )

Definately contact Iron Chef via the forum (Kristian) or google their website.

Just waiting for my baby to arrive

I have heard nothing but good things about Iron Chef. His posts are informative.

EVO 7 or 8 you say. Hmmmmm

haha! I have been following your thread closely sinista, beaaaauuutifull evo you have there for sale, the problem for me is that my budget is around the 20 k mark.. which is possibly one of the main reasons i have to sift through the crap of a lot of the private sales to find a gem.. also only puts me in the evo 7 category as they've taken a little drop as of late which in turn means its even more of a grey area never actually coming Aus compiled. I wish you the best of luck with the sale, if it werent for the slow times it would have already been sold thats for sure, its obvious it has been taken care of like your own baby.. How is the sale going in general? many phone calls, offers, time wasters?

Thanks for the reply darksky and bufforah, I have seen and read a lot from Iron Chef and you can tell by the way he is spoken and his reputation on this forum that he is a genuine professional and honest bloke, I think it comes down to once again having something arrive compiled and registered it may just be out of my reach financially.

Hi Bill, interest is there but slow till about a day ago. Has picked up since I put the pics back up, in the last day or so.

I've sent out extra pics after a couple of enquiries and one "very keen" timewaster. No direct calls or offers yet.

I'll be giving the option soon to sell with the enkies and retain my Diamond black volk GTC's. That will drop it a few thou.

It's just been put up on Gumtree and after the weekend I'll drop it on to carsales.

So you know it will need a stock zorst to pass rego or go over pits.

The one that's on there is over the DB limit. Not by too much but enough to be failed.

The EVO 7 owned by MaTBoY here on SAU may come up F/S at some stage.

Otherwise if it's brought out from England, Kristian is known to cross-dress into an 'Iron Lady' and she's even easier to deal with - just sayin' :P

I was in a simliar position about a year ago searching for a 7-8 had a import broker sending me auction sheets of sub 80k evos, turned out to be substantially cheaper to buy local, the quality evos in japan seem to fetch a premium so if you see a low km evo at a dealer going at a reasonable price you can assume its had a hair cut. In fact I'd avoid dealers like the plague and use chef or go with a private sale.

I ended up waiting for a local one that I liked, be patient and get it inspected by an evo specialist, you will find a nice 7 at 20k.

Also join up on EvolutionOz.net if you haven't already, there are some great examples for sale and great information.

Thanks for the reply and information mate, could you or anyone pm me an evo specialist that provides that type of service that I can take a long with me? I'm in Sydney

I rang a guy yesterday, really nice guy, been something that I have been kind of waiting for, sort of track ready as I want to get into and start participating in track days etc, has the work done to it, owned by a mature owner, very clean etc I rang the guy and a couple red flags turned up, the previous owner had done the work, he had only owned it for a year or so, the previous owner who had the work done purchased it from edward lee's stock back in 2007 with 45,000 kilometres on it, he had the work done to it at 65,000 and shortly later sold it, the car is at 75,000 k's now.

The characteristics of the car are exactly what I have been looking for, however when I heard Edward Lee's my heart did sink a little, the cars had the whole upgraded turbo, head work dyno, tuned by pulse racing (where I was hopefully planning on going, heard they were great with wrx and evo's) had the bottom end freshened up and cleaned, says he has receipts from the previous owner, as soon as I heard edward lee's my heart did sink realizing that it has possibly been wound back and possibly has previous damage history? (Heard and read a lot of dodgy crap about them)

problem then is it becomes like 95 % of them here have not been bought in as private imports and a lot have been bought originally from these dealerships.. at the least this ones had the work done to it and maintained and looked after by a professional place? as long as it hasn't been in a wreck previously. Car looks immaculate in the photos and he said the same to me over the phone, that the interior is absolutely faultless (the recaros have had a re- trim in leather and everything looks very well maintaned I may be going and seeing it next week, which is also why I need someone to recommend me someone who knows evo/ imports really well to inspect the car inside and out, I dont want to post the link of the particular car here, however it would be a HUGE help if anyone maybe iron/ladychef :P or someone whose heavily in the jap import game would allow me to PM them or anyone in the scene so they can tell me if they have seen the car or know a little about it, he told me its never been tracked, by him or the previous owner, my money is on I show someone whose in the scene the car and they tell me they have seen it somewhere in the past.. you just never know who knows who I suppose so it cant hurt to ask on here, the current owner seems like a real nice genuine guy, hes definately not the one im worried about anyway any help is gladly appreciated guys..

I'd get one of these guys to do a compression test, check AYC/ACD system, gearbox, transfer, etc the $200-300 for a pre-purchase inspection is the way, go halves with the guy  its useful information for both of you.

Was it freshened up to factory spec? what kind of power is it at?

Bill, it's worth also noting that the exchange rate is now at levels not seen since pre-GFC. Cars are getting cheaper once again (and finally!).

In terms of what to look for specific to Evos, check for rust, particularly under the rear of the car (Mitsubishis are notorious for it), accident repairs, wear and tear on the clutch (budget for a new one straight away), and look at the interior trim on the side bolster of the driver's seat (wear/holes) and door trims (comes loose).

am a evo owner myself, when inspecting as Kristian said, underbody rust is the number one thing, also if it's been painted in a "stonegaurd black" undernearth stay away as they're trying to hide something, also as for any jap import try and get as much paperwork as possibile, eg auction report/de-reg/service history.

Don't be put off by dealerships, some have excellent examples, where as some have terrible.. it just takes a while to find the right one..

Interior is the key give away about k's geaknob/steering wheel should be good condition, should have standard floor mats etc..

test drive is always important, drive train = number 1 checkpoint as there is always problems with the AYC/Gearbox/Diffs

Purchursing a evo stock is always the best..

Get it checked out by one of the evo specisilist as said as above..

Regarding the VIN checks, you can only check it if it passed through the auctions 3 months or less.. if Im correct(?)

    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
