Hey Lads,

So this saturday I was going to front up with my 33 to Mallala for a practice session, to be honest the only motorsport event I have ever done was a motorkhana .

Can anybody give me some insight as to how Mallala run their track practice sessions ?

Any advice for a novice ?

I am going to do an oil change before I go, taking my air compressor for tyre pressures, wheel brace to keep check of my wheel nuts etc.

The car is being trailered there and home so if I break it I will call it a day rather than try and fix something there.

All that so far sounds good, check cooler clamps and maybe grab some spares from repco before hand Hopefully I catch you out there

So your heading out this weekend then Steve ?

gates open at 8:30 from what I read on mallala's website, whether that actually is the case could be another thing ?

I will only be on street tyres etc, I am hoping they can put me a in a slower group (preferably something with honda civics, toyota corolla's, greyhounds or something)

I don't think so. Last time I went to one of these practice days I got there an hour or two late and still got on the track.

Ricky_Bobby, they split everyone into different speed / experience groups. You should just be able to let them know what group you want to be in.

Still have the last few track day sheets in my glove box.... Usually

Group 1 - Open Vehicles (those with no roof literally)

Group 2 - People with CAMS License

Group 3 - People with single day license (if you're new, you'll have this)

Group 4 - Go Karts

Group 2 can mingle with Group 3 if they feel like or have mates with (as long as they have enough wrist bands).

All the checks have been covered above. But in short, oil, water, brakes**, tyres....

Will see you out there! have 4 mates plus others I know all going out (including the old fella)...so should be a good day!

15 minutes between sessions, therefore about an hour each time you go on with your group.

Edit* = mate turned up at lunch last time, still gone on track or afternoon sessions (about 4 sessions from memory).

To be honest on the Mallala track day's I've never seen it...but if they see someone leaking alot of water or oil they'll do something. At the Time-Attack's there is definitely full-inspect scrutineering, but this isn't one of those :)

Remember long sleeve shirt, long pants, sealed shoes.

As others have said, give everything a once over, make sure you've got enough brakes, etc. I wouldn't stress too much about dodger last minute mods like an oil cooler, cos if you spring a leak your day will be over. Just drive to your car. Ya won't be putting too much stress on things running street rubber and pads.

You need wrist to ankle coverage like most events, helmet of course

Mallala run practice days are usually self scruitineered, so you just sign to say it's all ok. I usually rock up by 9, complete documentation (plus a briefing for first timers). Then unload ( I simply empty my boot) then check everything is cool and stand around talking shit till your session starts.

Run at your own pace. You will be in the day licence group which will have a mixed bag of cars and experience, so keep an eye out for the other cars, can be very unpredictable. Each session is 15 minutes and you will be out every hour. After a couple of sessions you will get used to what the others are like and get into a groove.

Be ready to uncover issues you found before such as boost leaks and brake fade. Most importantly have fun !

Will probably see you around

    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
    • Nah, that is hella wrong. If I do a simple linear between 150°C (0.407v) and 50°C (2.98v) I get the formula Temperature = -38.8651*voltage + 165.8181 It is perfectly correct at 50 and 150, but it is as much as 20° out in the region of 110°C, because the actual data is significantly non-linear there. It is no more than 4° out down at the lowest temperatures, but is is seriously shit almost everywhere. I cannot believe that the instruction is to do a 2 point linear fit. I would say the method I used previously would have to be better.
