Just Got My R34. I Knew It Was Before I Got It, But Head Unit Is In Japanese. Need Help On A Few Things.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys & gals,

I just picked up my R34 a few days ago, and other than the car stereo and not having a spare key I'm happy as. It has a nice looking front bar, and blacked out reverse lights, which looks nice. I'll stick some pics up on cardomain soon, once I get round to it. What I need to know, is if there is a way to replace the head unit with a micro computer that can run 4 dvr cameras, and play music cd's, dvd's, MP3's, Bluetooth/WiFi hookup to my iPhone, and use the existing head units gps and tv tuner gear. So as to save on wiring in the car. It would be nice to watch TV on something with a decent size monitor, say the size of an iPad.

The current unit is a Fujitsu Eclipse AVN 8802D with space imaging by Ikonos. It's no good for radio as the frequency bands are 76 to 90, and doesn't even pick up an FM transmitter on the right frequency. I was transmitting on 88.8MHz and it found it on 80.3MHz. So something is definitely wrong there. I also don't like the way the GPS won't work without the GPS DVD in it, which is no good to me as it is for Japan not Tasmania. I want a net aware unit that can get live updates from the web and link up to my home WiFi when at home for updates etc, or use my iPhone as a WiFi hotspot when I am out.

I will also be replacing the Mongoose immobiliser system with a Mongoose one that includes a turbo timer to help prevent turbo failures, but if this could be hooked into the PC letting me start it remotely to warm it up of a day of driving, while still locked and secure, that would be awesome.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I probably won't be able to upgrade it for a while, so if anyone has an ISO of the Australian version of the GPS maps I am willing to see if that at least helps until I replace it.

Thanks,

Pathos.

Wow people still use cardomain?

On topic though you will just need to replace the HU. The will need to be fixed with an FM band expander, they're not very much. The GPS etc in the headunit is completely useless as it's all for Japan and there is no Australian maps. Most decent modern double din units will do pretty much everything you require or you could just do an iPad/android install which is what it looks like you're leaning towards anyway.

I kinda figured the Head Unit would have to go. But at least this car lets me have a double din unit. With the Falcon I was limited to a single din unit, but it's not too bad. I'm gonna miss the bluetooth link to my phone until I replace the one in the Skyline after I sell it. I was thinking it might be possible to remove the 3 guages on the top of the A/C Unit with a combo Double Din unit PC and Screen setup, that could double as a G Meter and Audio Visual Media Center. It would flip up from a screen down orientation when off. Nice and neat then, and less of a look at me, while it's parked. But it will depend on my budget for doing stuff. If anyone has done this kind of thing before it would be cool to see some photo's of the final look and a features list.

Thanks for your help,

Pathos.

you are looking for an android based unit.

look up chinavation. whilstbit is a cheap chinese unit it will probable do what you want.

WOW so much cool stuff on that site. Gonna get one of their GPS in car dual camera drive recorders for sure when I can afford it, and the head units are pretty good to. But even though I like the idea of an Android PC the one with an OBDN Port is definitely something I want. If they make one with Android and OBDN port by the time I need it, then that would be the go. Thanks again Chris, great site.

Pathos.

    • I don't think the shuffle can damage the turbos. It only happens at low shaft speeds and loads. It's just annoying (to some people - others are tickled by the effect) and it quite possibly reduces spool performance a little bit.
    • Oh dear. The panel beating needs to be done before the filler work. Do you have a photo of the dent before you started? Hard enough to not flex and only hit the high spots?  What do you mean it was just temporary?
    • Can u check this way it works for power supply?

    • I appreciate the detailed explanation, think I understand now. I spent the better part of last night reading what I could about shuffle and potential solutions. I had replaced the OEM twin turbo pipe with an alternate Y pipe that is separated further away from the turbo. The current one is from HKS and I had a previous pipe that was separated even further away, both have shuffle. I had heard that a divider can be welded in to the OEM pipe to remove turbulence, and figure that aftermarket pipes that are more separated would achieve the same thing. From what I read, most people with -10 turbos get shuffle due to their size, though it's a bit less common with -5s on a standard RB26. I think Nismoid mentioned somewhere it's because OEM recirculation piping is common in Australia with -5 cars. It seems that the recommendation tends to vary between a few options, which I've ordered in what I think is most feasible for me:  1. Retune the MAP or boost controller to try to eliminate shuffle 2. Install OEM recirculation piping 3. Something called a 'balance pipe' welded onto the exhaust manifolds. I don't know if kits for this are available, seems like pure fabrication work 4. simply go single turbo My current layout is as follows: Garrett 2860 -5s HKS Racing Suction intake MAF delete pipes HKS racing chamber intake piping hard intercooler piping,  ARC intercooler HKS SSQV BOV and pipe Haltech 2500 elite ECU and boost solenoid/controller HPI dump pipes OEM exhaust manifolds HKS VCAM step 1 and supporting head modifications Built 2.6 bottom end All OEM recirculation piping was removed, relevant areas sealed off I'll keep an eye out for any alternative solutions but can get started with this.  Only other question is, does shuffle harm the turbo (or anything else)? It seems like some people say your turbo shafts will explode because of the opposing forces after a while and others say they just live with it and adjust their pedal foot accordingly.
