Hi all,

Some of you may know that i was working on a digital dash for the stock Nissan ecus.

Well the time has finally come! I have got all the parts together to make 10 and already have made one to prove the concept.

Attached is a pic (taken with my phone) that shows it in action, and sitting there with the (proper) Consult connector.

It plugs into the Consult diagnostic port and displays 8 sensors at a time, in realtime.

The sensors/data you can choose from are:

rpm

speed (km/h and mph)

afm voltage

injector pulse width

injector duty cycle

coolant temp

ignition timing

tps voltage

absolute tps position (%age)

EGT voltage (if supported by ecu)

o2 sensor voltage

AAC position (%age)

battery voltage

Lean/Rich Indicator

Flags (On/off indicators): Closed TPS, A/C Relay, A/C Compressor, Fuel pump, start switch, VTC solenoid, thermo fans, and a few others.

All of these variables depend on whether your ecu supports them.

The device also has a serial port so you can connect your laptop to it and log the data. I am currently testing a program that pulls fault codes and erases them, logs data, does a fuel map trace(!), and a few other things.

Update: A program is available which actively logs the data while the display is in use! A link is available on the NissDataScan page.

You can also read the stock maps from the ecu with a laptop. And no, you can’t tune the ecu with this!

It also has a peak-hold function, so it will remember the max rpm, duty cycle, pulse width, afm voltage, water temp etc, and store it in memory for recall later...

Final price is $300AU + shipping (which is around $15 around Australia). Those of you in Sydney are welcome to come past Unigroup Engineering and check it out (when i'm there, let me know before hand).

I can either sell a basic version which shows the variables that 99% of Nissan ecus support, or do a test on an ecu from your car so I can custom make one which reads out as many things as your ecu supports. A custom one might not work on other Nissans though.

Some commonly asked questions are:

Will it work with an aftermarket ECU?

Nope, only with stock ECUs, also ECUs with are chipped/daughterboard installed.

Will it work with Power FC?

Nope.

Will it work with an interceptor like the Unichip or S-AFC?

Yep, but the display will report what the ECU "sees".

My car isn't in the supported cars list. Will it work with my ?

Chances are if it has the Consult port available, it will.

Sounds intresting, when do you think you will be ready with the program that erases faults??

Also will that take care of the airbag, abs, etc??

Do you also have what the above setting are suppoed to be on a stock car.

Penfold: My device works with GT-R ecus. I had it working with an r32 ecu today. PM me if you want me to send you one.

Squizz: My gauges aren't purple, they look like that because of the (phone) camera i used, they are still the stock blue colour. BTW this is a read only device, so it doesn't remove the speed cut.

Will give it a try out then. I'm sure this will be invaluable for anyone with a stock ECU and trying to diagnose a problem. I'll post up my readings for a r33 GTR so we can have an idea of whats normal, etc - mine is running a bit rich though on startup. So hopefully itll be able to tell me something.

This is an amazing achievement! I have had an ongoing bug with my GTR for some time and was only until yesterday that i found out that the oxygen sensors were shot by using an expensive $12,000 analyser.

Youre little device would have shown me the same zero reading for sensor 1 and radical readings on sensor 2, straight away.

I would be very interested in purchasing one of these devices although i have just forked out for a power fc and hand controller, so i will have all of the information on the hand controller and with map trace function. With the option of using 'FC logit' software from NZ, i cant really see the point in using your system as i can plug my laptop in the pfc and log using this program.

If i did stick to the stock ECU, i would definitely buy one and i will be sure to tell as many people as i can about these!

A few critical comments:

1. Use red knobs on the device or touch panel ones

2. Talk to a carbon fibre specialist to change construction material from metal (i can give you details of a moulder/fabricator of carbon and its alot cheaper than you think)

3. Make the device match the size of most japanese style electrical goods to give a more preofessional touch and to make it easier to fit into the car with other already installed goods.

I have a friend with a rb20 powered silvia, his car is having cold start problems and stall on overun problems. I am quite sure that your device could sort out his problems and would look extra cool to boot!

I agree with BNR32.... excellent device and im sure im jumping the gun, but asthetically, it needs some minor work... in saying that tho, id happily put one in my car right now, as i dont give a fck what it looks like, as long as it tells me what my car is/isnt doing.... tho if u had a pretty one, id be all over it - like a fat kid on a smarty !!!

Kos!: Blue LCD screens are hard to come by. The ones i have seen cost over 5x the price of the green one.

I can see why you guys would like it to look better, but without spending another $200 on top, you cant get it much better than that. I do make these in my spare time you know!

BNR32: Its made of plastic, and the front panel is perspex, it's not made of metal :D

There is free software available online that can read and clear fault codes, log data, suck out stock maps etc. I have all the free software here. Also, the more people get these, the more people will go out and write even more software.

Some ppl have been asking the same questions, so i'll answer them all here (again).

I cant make it look better without adding to the cost and complexity of making it (which in turns makes it cost more again).

I cant change the screen to blue, without (again) adding at least $100 to the cost. Most suppliers have the green ones in stock because they are the standard colour. Blue ones would have to be specially ordered, which means lead times of weeks if not months, and i would also need to order around 100-10,000 without getting completely ripped off.

If anyone knows of an electronics supplier that has blue lcd screens i would be more than happy to chase them up about it.

Attached with this post is a copy of the manual, which explains what it can display, and how the 3 buttons are used.

from looking at it all, i can only see one thing missing ....

a boost gauge ...

this would finish it off perfectly ....

even if it was a seperate module that had to plug into it is the ecu does not measure boost, being able to display all this stuff on one box is great !

i pretty much have 8 on the shelf which need another 30 mins work to get shipped. As soon as i receive the money by DD i send within 24 hours. COD is fine too, with which i also need 12-24 hours notice.

I'd just like to add.. having a look over what this thing can read and display..

An absolute bargain! If you have any desire to work or diagnose any problems on your car and have a basic idea of how your car works, i think it would be invaluable, and easily pay for itself in workshop costs fairly quickly.

Seems to do what a lot of what the official Nissan consult device does which is *only* available to registered workshops and costing many thousands of dollars.

    • Well, after the full circus this week (new gearbag, 14 psi actuator on, injectors and AFM upgraded, and.....turbo repair) the diagnosis on the wastegate is in. It was broken. It was broken in a really strange way. The weld that holds the lever arm onto the wastegate flapper shaft broke. Broke completely, but broke in such a way that it could go back together in the "correct" position, or it could rearrange itself somewhere else along the fracture plane and sit with the flapper not parallel to the lever. So, who knows how and when exactly what happened? No-one will ever know. Was it broken like this the first time it spat the circlip and wedged itself deep into the dump? Or was it only broken when I tried to pry it back into place? (I didn't try that hard, but who knows?). Or did it break first? Or did it break between the first and second event of wierdness? Meh. It doesn't matter now. It is welded back together. And it is now held closed by a 14 psi actuator, so...the car has been tuned with the supporting mods (and the order of operations there is that the supporting mods and dyno needed to be able to be done first before adding boost, because it was pinging on <<14 psi with the new turbo with only a 6 psi actuator). And then tuned up a bit, and with the boost controller turned off throughout that process. So it was only running WG pressure and so only hit about 15-16 psi. The turbo is still ever so slightly lazier than might be preferred - like it is still a bit on the big side for the engine. I haven't tested it on the road properly in any way - just driven it around in traffic for a half hour or so. But it is like chalk and cheese compared to what it was. Between dyno numbers and driving feedback: It makes 100 kW at 3k rpm, which is OK, could be better. That's stock 2JZ territory, or RB20 with G series 550. It actually starts building boost from 2k, which is certainly better than it did recently (with all the WG flapper bullshit). Although it's hard to remember what it was like prior to all that - it certainly seems much, much better. And that makes sense, given the WG was probably starting to blow open at anything above about 3 psi anyway (with the 6 psi actuator). It doesn't really get to "full boost" (say 16 psi) until >>4k rpm. I am hopeful that this is a feature of the lack of boost controller keeping boost pressure off the actuator, because it was turned off for the dyno and off for the drives afterward. There's more to be found here, I'm sure. It made 230 rwkW at not a lot more than 6k and held it to over 7k, so there seems to be plenty of potential to get it up to 250-260rwkW with 18 psi or so, which would be a decent effort, considering the stock sized turbo inlet pipework and AFM, and the return flow cooler. According to Tao, those things should definitely put a bit of a limit on it by that sort of number. I must stress that I have not opened the throttle 100% on the road yet - well, at least not 100% and allowed it to wind all the way up. It'll have to wait until some reasonable opportunity. I'm quite looking forward to that - it feels massively better than it has in a loooong time. It's back to its old self, plus about 20% extra powers over the best it ever did before. I'm going to get the boost controller set up to maximise spool and settle at no more than ~17 psi (for now) and then go back on the dyno to see what we can squeeze out of it. There is other interesting news too. I put together a replacement tube to fit the R35 AFM in the stock location. This is the first time the tuner has worked with one, because anyone else he has tuned for has gone from Z32 territory to aftermarket ECU. No-one has ever wanted to stay Nistuned and do what I've done. Anyway, his feedback is that the R35 AFM is super super super responsive. Tiny little changes in throttle position or load turn up immediately as a cell change on the maps. Way, way more responsive than any of the old skool AFMs. Makes it quite diffifult to tune as you have to stay right on top of that so you don't wander off the cell you wanted to tune. But it certainly seems to help with real world throttle response. That's hard to separate from all the other things that changed, but the "pedal feel" is certainly crisp.
    • I'm a bit confused by this post, so I'll address the bit I understand lol.  Use an air compressor and blow away the guide coat sanding residue. All the better if you have a moisture trap for your compressor. You'd want to do this a few times as you sand the area, you wouldn't for example sand the entire area till you think its perfect and then 'confirm' that is it by blowing away the guide coat residue.  Sand the area, blow away the guide coat residue, inspect the panel, back to sanding... rinse and repeat. 
    • The detail level is about right for the money they charge for the full kit... AU$21.00 each issue, 110 issues for a total of $2,300 (I mentioned $2.2K in the first post when the exchange rate was better). $20/week is doable... 😐
