Hey guys I have an R34 GTT coupe automatic. Was just wondering what you guys use/prefer as engine, power steering, transmission oils (brand/type) etc

I am curious as to what you guys think is best. The car goes through periods of everyday use and also theres times where it doesn't get driven for a week or so.

Also any other general tips for good maintenance (like letting the car warm up in the morning etc) would be great!

Personally I only use Royal Purple 10w40 engine oil, but that's just a personal thing. Lots of guys using Penrite, Motul, Gulf Western, etc. Weight of the oil you use depends on how many km's your engine has on it. Power steering I just use the OEM Nissan stuff, and I've got a manual gearbox so can't help you with transmission fluid.

As for maintenance, not a lot you need to do other than check fluid levels etc. every so while. The car should be fine sitting for a week or two, mine sits for months at a time haha. If it is going to be sitting for longer than two weeks without getting a decent drive, I recommend getting a 3-stage battery charger to ensure you get a good life out of your battery.

Don't let the car warm up in the morning by letting it idle, that's silly. It takes longer for the engine to warm up this way, and you need to warm up your gearbox and diff anyway. Plus you annoy your neighbors. Just drive the car gently for the first 10-15 minutes or so, depending on how cold it is. If you plan on doing some track work at any stage, some gauges (water/oil temp, oil pressure, etc.) wouldn't go astray and I find mine extremely useful. Otherwise, just drive the car like you would any other car, and service it regularly :thumbsup:

+ your family, if your car is parked at the front of the house where the bedrooms are hahaha but i always find it amusing

With warming up the engine. I would say to let it sit for a minute or two after startup so oil pressure builds, coolant can circulate, etc. Like not driving it immediately after the engine starts.

Oil I would say a decent 10W-40 is fine. Nothing super cheap, but you don't have to go super expensive either. Used Nulon Full Synthetic10W-40 previously and just put in Penrite 10 Tenths 10w-40, Penrite is not giving any lifter noise on startup whereas had some noise for a few seconds with the Nulon. Slightly thicker if the engine is older/using a lot of oil or used for track.

Warm up times is subject to much debate, lol.

As the guys have said, give it a minute or two to get some oil pressure, but also ease the box and diff in as well.

When I was daily-ing my Cefiro, I'd start the car, chuck my bag, phone, wallet etc on passenger seat, jump in, find some tunes/check Facebook, that'd kill about a minute or so, then roll it out the driveway, pop it into second and idle down my street (about 100-200 metres @ 20-30ish kmph??), then be gentle and stick below 2500rpm for the next couple of backstreets, then keep it under 4000rpm, then by the time I hit the highway it was up to temp.

Mine takes ages to hit temp even while driving. Like i'm talking a good 15mins+. I think the thermostat may need replacing.

TBH, I usually warm the engine up to about 40-50 degrees with some throttle blips every couple mins before taking off. Take it easy, like no positive boost and <3000rpm, until oil pressure drops so i know oil is up to temp.

    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
