Hi guys,

Just wondering if anybody has tried ethernet over power, the type that runs ethernet over 240v power points around the home (I'm not talking about Power over Ethernet - PoE - just to clear any confusion ;) ) as an alternative to WiFi. Reason being is I'm on a budget and cannot justify getting an elec or cabler out to install LAN points.

I'm thinking to run WiFi only, but ethernet over power has caught my eye as an alternative for more intensive data transfers and gaming.

I'm about to move into my place, regular sized single story, 3 bedroom house built in the 1970s - I'm going with the assumption the electrical wiring is still orignal (with the exception of the smart meter and central safety switch). My network setup is fairly basic.

- Home theater PC in the lounge

- Router/switch/Wifi AP in the hallway, which is roughly in the center of the house

- Housemate is a web developer using a PC

- Synology NAS to be placed in a cupboard or in the study

- PC in my bedroom

- Laptops/Tablets for roaming about the place

Looking forward to hear about your opinions.

Cheers

I had EoP a while ago running to a router that went to my PS3, TV and T-box. Worked alright but every so often would drop out/fail and sometimes took a while to get it going again.

I then went with a Wifi Extender, running this to recieve the Wifi from the main router then instead of extending the Wifi, just ran wired connections to the extender. This worked better but did fault on the odd occasion. Much better then the EoP I had. It might have just been poor quality or an issue with the house wiring (although the hose was only 8 years old or so)

I reccomend just getting a good quality Wifi router. I spent $300 on a Netgear router in the new house and so far it has been faultless. Super fast as well, running Foxtel on T-Box (this is internet based) through Wifi without issues even though telstra reccomends a wired connection. Can even download movies etc on my laptop while the Foxtel is running and neither drop out or seem to have any speed issues

yep i run it. most of them take up one of the power points and you cant use it for anything else. the netcomm NP504 model is a passthrough model, so you dont have to sacrifice a power point ( if your like me and are a bit short of power points).

piss easy to set up and i had no problems. you wont have much problem with overloading the system power wise. as i have these connected thought the ONE adapter

1x UPS
2x PC's
3x monitors
1x PS3
1x printer

speed wise, through my house ( built in the late 70's early 80's) its like running it straight from the router itself. i see no speed drop or packet loss, no lag. using download accelerators and i'm picking up 1.6MB/sec ( fast for our area)

EDIT: might want to avoid TP link. my co-worker has the TP link version of these and his keeps on dropping out and he is having alot of problems with it...

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
