Where in Perth can i get permits for my mods, and because i have permits does that mean its foolproof for when cops decide to pull me up and try and give me a yellow, please bear with me as i dont know much about about Perth laws as back in NZ you can put pretty much anything on your car and get away with it,..I cant afford to be yellowed as it will f**k me up for work

depends what it is,

i am going through engineering for my build at the moment, but its a 2.8 with a big single, half cage, suspension & brake mods.

but

you need to submit the paperwork to DOT and they will respond with approval in principal. then you engage and auto engineer who sorts it all our for you.

Would DOT really approve of this, street driven?

My 32 is not running and I'm scared of even letting the rego run out haha

The mods i have carried out so far, are 3'' turbo back exhaust with hi-flow cat, adjustable coilovers, front mount intercooler, BOV, Pod filter and 18'' rims.. I just want permits foir those mods to prevent a yellow sticker, or do you guys think i can still get one even with permits?

Well I'm in QLD and when I transferred the my r32 gtst into my name, pretty much same mods as yours

They didn't look over the car or anything.. But I wasn't re-registering.. So yeah different ha..

I can say no to pod filter.. That won't pass. (Unless its secured??) but stock air box is better anyway..

they have sent me a letter for approval in principal, so yes

i just need to pass an emissions test, noise test, brake test (E85 and a "custom exhaust" will take care of that ;) cant have an external gate

Do you mean can't have an external gate venting to atmosphere? Or no external gate at all?

Cant have external gate venting to atmo, untreated exhaust gas = big no no

Yeh this is obvious; Hattori didn't specify though. Just said no external gate. I was quite sure a plumbed in external wastegate is fine, though I haven't been through the process myself, so just wanted to clarify.

I bought my skyline over from NZ and it had pretty much the same mods. It passed the pits, I got the permits and havent had any problems.

You need to get a copy of the rules from DOT for modifications that are legal. Some people mistake permits or engineering certificates for a "do what I like and get away with it" permit. For example, if you lower your car to 2cm off the ground, you will never get a permit or engineers certificate. You need to mod within the rules as well. Just something to keep in mind.

  • 3 weeks later...

How have you got a permit for your adjustable suspension? i got a letter of approval in principal but its saying I need to have 1/3 of the original suspension travel and a engineers report. There is no way the BC coilovers are going to have 1/3 of the original travel. I've started the hunt for standard suspension to get over the pits

    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.

    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
