hi all,

i got a new turbo put in (or so i thought) and fuel pump, injectors, afm and ecu + tune

a few days after a clamp blew off on my intercooler piping (where the old bov used to be) and my spark plugs ended up burning out. i called mechanic and he told me to change the spark plugs (which i did and it worked) i noticed my idle sitting a bit high. i went to reconnect my boost gauge and boost controller since they blew off as well and noticed the mechanic (i ordered the turbo through him as well) had left the stock turbo on :/. been meaning to call him and ask him wtf is going on since i don't want to be jipped out of a garrett and now it's starting to cause engine knock.

does anyone have any good advice on how i could go about this situation? i got it on the invoice that i had paid for a garrett and i can't tell what would be causing the knocking and if it could be related to anything he's done? any help much appreciated thanks

Knocking is thanks to a shit tune. If it looks like a stocker its not a garrett unless he fitted a high flow if thats what you asked for. This guy sounds dodgey and I'd be going back there maybe with a mate or two and dont ask. You tell. You ask and they will put it over you. You go in there say mate got some problems first things first this is a stock turbo I payed you for an aftermarket and a tune and what you gave me was stock and the engine is pinging.

But things is if you asked for a garrett turbo did you pay for a new dump? Garretts have a different bolt pattern. What you can do is pull the intake pipe and look into the turbo. You should be able to tell if its stock or a highflow. if you so happen to have an r33 feel the comp wheel and it should feel like plastic if its a stocker.

it's a small turbo with nissan on it, i ordered a gtx3071 and i compared it to the size of my friends gt3076 and it's half the size. the stock turbo was hitting 18 psi my phone cameras broken i got one photo i'll try get some more when my friend comes over

i asked him for a garrett and he recommended the gtx3071 so i said i'll go with that, on the receipt he put stealth garrett gtx3071 kit.

he couldn't get any further than 330hp and this is the list of parts i had gotten

gtx3071

sard 740cc injectors

power fc

3" dump pipe

300zx afm

i can tell the afm and power fc is in and my friend told me that the spooling sound will be caused by the dump pipe

also do you guys think it's safe to drive to him? it'll be about an hour drive in peak hour tomorrow or should i get it towed. i really can't afford to have heaps more problems

power fc shows the knock go up, it feels as if a piston is missing and the driving isnt that smooth (didnt boost at all when it started to happen and continued to happen) but what do i know i'm not that good with cars :(

is there anything he can say back to me to try weasel his way out of it? just so i'm prepared for excuses if it happens thanks

Yeah but thats no gtx. Again though the receipt says stealth gtx. I think what you might have is a high flowed turbo with 3071 core. It can be done but the housing is small and 250rwkw is on par with a highflow. Yes its very likely a 3071 highflow which he could say is what he gave you when he says stealth. You must say to him that no matter what he says a gtx3071 jammed into a 21u housing is not a true gtx3071 which is what you asked for.

How much knock are you reading on the power fc?

Well u can say garrett turbos dont have nissan on them for a start!

just because a part may have NISSAN cast or stamped into it doesnt mean that its made by NISSAN

so basically because the housing is a lot smaller it wrecks all the potential of it?

it knocks up and down by a few bars

Good luck with it. On aftermarket mods you will struggle with a warranty of any sort

What do you mean? This isnt a warranty issue. He got shafted. He did not get the parts he wanted or expected.

How much knock as a number? It should show you the reading as a digita bar display and as a peak number. I dont think its a great idea shoving a 3071 core into a 21u. Its like putting a lion on a leash.

i havn't really played around with the power fc i'm pretty scared of changing any settings, it looks like it was going up to 4 bars on the digital display and i could feel it when driving, too scared to start the engine now don't want to wreck any more will get it towed to him tomorrow morning and hopefully it goes well, he told me the engine will look stock but he said nothing about changing the gtx3071 and putting it inside the stock turbo i thought he meant he was going low mount so if i did get pulled over a quick glance at the engine bay won't be able to see the turbo

    • Price seems pretty good to me. Also seems a hell of a lot cheaper then buying another vehicle that only ever gets used for towing.  I'm a long way from you mate, I'm a couple of hours out of Brizzy.

    • The sodium acetate, mixed with citric acid, doesn't actually buffer each other. Interestingly though, if you used Sodium Acetate, and acetic acid, THAT becomes a buffer solution. Additionally, a weak acid that can attack a metal, is still a weak acid that can attack a metal. If you don't neutralise it, and wash it off, it's going to be able to keep attacking. It works the same way when battery acid dries, get that stuff somewhere, and then it gets wet, and off it goes again breaking things down. There's a reason why people prefer a weak acid, and it's because they want TIME to be able to be on their side. IE, DIY guys are happy to leave some mild steel in vinegar for 24 hours to get mill scale off. However, if you want to do it chemically in industry, you grab the muriatic acid. If you want to do it quicker at home, go for the acetic acid if you don't want muriatic around. At the end of the day, look at the above thumbnail, as it proves what I said in the earlier post, you can clean that fuel tank up all you want with the solution, but the rust that has now been removed was once the metal of the fuel tank. So how thin in spots is your fuel tank getting? If the magazine on the left, is the actual same magazine as on the right, you'll notice it even introduces more holes... Well, rust removal in general actually does that. The fuel tank isn't very thick. So, I'll state again, look to replace the tank, replace the fuel hanger, and pump, work out how the rust and shit is making it past the fuel filter, and getting into the injectors. That is the real problem. If the fuel filter were doing its job, the injectors wouldn't be blocked.
    • Despite having minimal clothing because of the hot weather right now, I did have rubber gloves and safety glasses on just in-case for most of the time. Yes, I was scrubbing with my gloves on before, but brushing with a brush removes the remaining rust. To neutralize, I was thinking distilled water and baking soda, or do you think that would be overkill?
