Hi Guys,

Had my car which is a R32 GTR for nearly two years and got a haltech ecu installed last week. Drove it home from the shop and seemed ok but have just got back from a drive today and there seems to be a flat spot or miss. When I get up it the car goes fine no miss nothing. But when im just cruising there seems to be a flat spot around the 2000 rpm mark. Spits and farts a bit until the revs pick up. Just curious if it has something to do with the tuning? Never done that with the stock ecu but is now. Should I call up the mechanic who installed and tune it and be asking him to rectify it? Just thought id get your opinions before giving him a call.

Cheers

Ryan

Did he take it for a road tune after the dyno run? Usually these light load issues only pop up on the street.

These things happen, as long as he fixes it free as you have already paid him for a tune... If you have issues still, it may mean he simply can't tune. (block or copy/paste tuner)

Im really not sure Scotty if he did or not. He had the car over a week and also put a heavy duty clutch in. So for the cash i spent there I sort of expect it to be perfect. I'll see what he says tomorrow. I wont be paying any more to fix it as it never done that with the stock ecu. If he has an issue fixing it or refuses to I'll be happy to share.

Mmm yeah when you dyno tune you just can't get to the really light loads. Its not the tuners fault as alot of tuners believe the dyno is the be all end all. My car was tuned in dyno for a good 4hrs. On very very light throttle the car does cannot gain rpm. The mix is too lean it just coughs and splutters. Abit of throttle enrichment should do the trick. What id do is tell the tuner to grab his laptop and jump in the car while you drive and have him adjust the cells and throttle enrichment. Shouldn't take long at all with a savvy tuner.

  • 3 weeks later...

Can any of you guys recommend me a tuner in brisbane please.. I've been back to the mechanic and car still runs like crud. He did get in with the laptop and played around but not much changed. Find it hard to understand how they can hand back a car running like that after spending close to $5000 in their shop. I wont be going back there. I've talked to Mercury Motorsports and am thinking about taking it there for a re-tune. Just curious on other tuners out there you guys can recommend who have good previous track records.

Cheers

    • Well, this is probably where a wiring diagram and a multimeter come into play.
    • I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want.
    • Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue.
    • Ive converted a few clusters for the R33 with 320km/h dials. On the back there are some pads which can be bridged or unbridged (using solder or wick braid) to calibrate it. There is one bridge which is for MPH <> KPH; and there are combinations of bridges to offset it. There is probably a diagram  For example; this is my conversion for a 180km/h dial to a 320km/h dial (I put custom GT-R dials on it with the GTS25t layout) If you have J2 soldered (assuming the S clusters have a similar config to the R clusters); you may need to remove that solder
    • Back on topic 😉, these are some of the notable pages from the booklets that are supplied with each weekly parts update. I never knew the BNR32 test mule car had an S13 Silvia front end... *Edit: On closer inspection the test car still had the R32 body, but only the front end had Silvia panels etc.
