Hey guys does anyone know whether mounting gauges in the dash in front of passenger is legal or not I have searched everywhere and nothing explains it. There is lots about on the dash and side pillar but not in the dash itself? Help please!!!!!

As far as I know they are only illegal if obscures your few out the window and I do believe not allowed to be above dash line. Mines mounted on pillar and is spot on in line with the highest point of the dash around dash cluster.

I have mounted 4 apexi ones in the dash where some cars have front passenger airbag. My concern is a cop will tell me that its illegal because the passenger could hit them in a crash but I can't find any info

Thats a tricky one to work around I think cause as you said thats more then likely what they'll go you on.

Pretty keen to know the exact rules on these as well. I know the guage pillar that sits above dash is definitely illegal in QLD.

But whether the 3 gauge pod that sits on top, I'm not sure but have seen a lot of other cars with these.

When I bought my 32 gtst my boost gauge was in the glovebox haha...

Mechanical gauges inside the car are a no no. Electric gauges only (unless something has changed).

Mounting - can't obscure vision, can't be more forward than the front most part of your dash (hence no A-Pillar placement unless factory like the JDM S15)

The new ADR's are a pain in the ass, trying to find the exact ones for you.

Cops don't seem to have a worry about where mine is on pillar down at most furthurest point so doesn't obsure window at all. In saying so it is blocking the demisted for driver window.

Okay, great.

So, ie. boost guage with vacuum line (mechanical?) - Illegal.

Oil temp (electric?) Legal?

Sorry.

That's what I've heard as well. Apparently in a crash hot oil can potentially make it's way into the cabin via the hose and be a hazard?

Never herd of that.. But my car is going to be so overkill when it comes to heat wrap & the material I use for all my engine bay hoses lol

Well then that'd make my boost gauge illeagal seeing as it has a air tube going from back of gauge to the engine bay. Would it? I mean it's only a air tube right? No fluids?

It's just a vac line off the manifold so no fluids.

Downloaded this PDF from QLD Transport a while back.

Thank you Jiffo. Printed.. so its a field of vision thing. I would be willing to take that to court. If I attach my GPS Unit that is way worse than A-Piller gauges...

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
