Hey ppls.

Having a new flywheel and clutch (Exedy Super Heavy Duty or something) fitted today.

Bought an Ogura flywheel weighing in at about 4.5kgs.

The old one weighed in at 8.7 kgs.

See pics below.

Yet to drive it, so I'm not sure how it feels yet.

Will let you all know when I do.

I just upgraded to an osgiken twin plate last weekend. Stock 32gtst clutch and flywheel weighed 15kgs and the new one weighed 9kgs. I've found acceleration off boost to be greatly improved, haven't felt much difference on boost. Biggest issue is the car will occasionally stall itself when pulling up at a set of lights when the air con is off.

An orgura 4.5 from greenline was $579 shipped but didnt inclued import tax or gst.

I got an exedy 4.3kg for $480 from a local dealer. Is crome purple in color and has a removerable friction plate so you dont have to skim it flat if your puck wears groves in it, just replace friction plate.

Okay,

After one evening of driving and one morning to work I have found the following (only about 30 klms).

When the car starts it makes a cool zing noise from the flywheel!!

Low revs, loaded engine, high gear about 1400 - 1700 rpm vibration/noise (more like noise) from flywheel and clutch, but this may go away with the running in of the clutch.

When cold starting, the engine settles to idle much faster and all changes in engine speed happen much faster.

Need to re-learn how to change gears as the engine drops off much faster, and can sometimes lead to messy changes, car jerks forward due to not enough revs. Method of fixing is simply change faster.

Havent done any performance based testing yet as I want to run the clutch in first.

Will keep this thread updated.

i didn't know excedy made lightweight flywheels for us. 480 is damn good. Do you think excedy dealers here in melb can get it. Coz whenever i say skyline everyone has to ring around frantically to find something to tell me they don't know 15 mins later... Stupid ppl.

That might be an aluminium one, they usually have a chromemolly insert for the friction area. The Ogura is solid chrome molly, it's harder than cast iron and alot stronger too. They both are nice and light.

Who sells the 4.3kg exedy ones for $480?

sorry my f#@k up the brand is Xclutch, I got a new pressure plate and new pucks put on my 5 puck at the same time so i think he droped the price a little but they wouldnt be more than $500 new from, Autoclutch , osborne park (perth) I highly reconmend them and he deals with lots of skylines so its simple to get parts from him. I took photos befor i put it in, ill scan them and post up mid next week. The flywheel is purple and it has aluminuim fiction section (that can be replaced) I was told it was an extremly strong set up. Ive got a 2500 pressure plate and a 5 puck button clutch so we will see.

I also noticed increased vibration due to my lightened flywheel. Mine is chrome molly.

With the new engine I've been debating to stick with a stock flywheel or to use the molly one. Depends how the ceramic clutches work with the stock flywheels?

Would any 1 know if it totally rips the flywheel apart or not?

Im using a 5kg trust flywheel with an exedy hd clutch, its a little shuddery on hill starts and takes a bit more rpm to get off the mark, but the engine does rev more freely which you notice on up changes and downchanges.

Mine doesn't like reverse, nor does it like hillstarts.

I find I need to almost hit it at 2,500rpm or so; I often sidestep it and make the car squirm sideways. People behind me must find it hilarious.

Toda is what I use. 4kg or so?

T.

Okay,

Further reports on the flywheel.

I driven around quite a lot today and have the following to say.

NOTHING BAD AT ALL!

The car starts perfectly, idles perfectly, revs clean.

Driving took a little bit of adjusting as the car revs up faster and down faster, so between gears you must be a bit quicker to be smooth, but even if you are not the car doesn't jerk as much as you come off the clutch because the flywheel doesn't "store" as much energy. On hard changes, the car doesn't leap forward as per before, rather it just sounds more like a race car and accelerates.

Because I didn't fit a button clutch, the flywheel and clutch combo is very liveable. Easy to slip and to drive calmly.

Summing up, I would highly recommend the fitment of a light weight flywheel to your ride.

I will be taking it to Calder (along with the new intercooler) to see how I got and to evaluate the gains this coming Friday (weather permitting).

I'll let you all know how I go.

The bit i've heard so much but never understood is the "revs up quicker". I would have thought that the only way to make a car rev quicker (under load) would be to have a more powerful engine?? I can understand the revving on the downshifts but not the accelleration part.

Lighter flywheel weight take less effort to turn it Ben.. revs up easier

    • As far as I can tell I have everything properly set in the Haltech software for engine size, injector data, all sensors seem to be reporting proper numbers.  If I change any injector details it doesnt run right.    Changing the base map is having the biggest change in response, im not sure how people are saying it doesnt really matter.  I'm guessing under normal conditions the ECU is able to self adjust and keep everything smooth.   Right now my best performance is happening by lowering the base map just enough to where the ECU us doing short term cut of about 45% to reach the target Lambda of 14.7.  That way when I start putting load on it still has high enough fuel map to not be so lean.  After 2500 rpm I raised the base map to what would be really rich at no load, but still helps with the lean spots on load.  I figure I don't have much reason to be above 2500rpm with no load.  When watching other videos it seems their target is reached much faster than mine.  Mine takes forever to adjust and reach the target. My next few days will be spent making sure timing is good, it was running fine before doing the ECU and DBW swap, but want to verify.  I'll also probably swap in the new injectors I bought as well as a walbro 255 pump.
    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack.
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
    • In my head it does make sense to be a fuel problem since that is what I touched when cleaning the system. When I was testing with the fuel pressure gauge, the pressure was constantly 2.5 bar with the FPR vacuum removed. When stalling, the pressure was going up to 3.0 bar (which is how it should be on ignition).
    • ECUtalk pages don't mention they support the ABS computer (consult port has more than one CAN), so you might just need a different scan tool. But, I would expect ABS is a different light to the brake warning/handbrake light, do you see an ABS light come on for a few seconds when you turn the key from ACC to IGN? But since you said: I'd have a look at the ABS sensors in the rear hubs to make sure they are not damaged, disconnected etc.
