Hi all, 7 years ago i imported an 89 gtr through prestige. Long story, but when it arrived the motor was stuffed(big cams my ass, more like busted piston) hence didnt get complied.

The car has import approval through the old scheme. Car has an hks single turbo.

Anyway im looking at refitting an rb26(has a 30/26 now) but hopefully retaining the single setup.

After speaking to a few raws workshops im getting some conflicting advice.

am i better off getting new import approval under the new scheme, or persevering with the old scheme?

Car also has a brake conversion, am i better off putting stocker on to get it complied?

Thanks

You need to find out a few things and think about a few others:

1. Can you even get it complied now? You need to check that the old scheme is still useable for the GTR. If it isnt you would be under the new scheme - if the car complies. It may not be ok under either category.

2. You need to figure out what you need to spend to get the car registered (If it can be)

3. You need to think about what it will be worth once it is registered.

4. You need to think about whether all that is worth the hassle or whether you would be better off just buying a newer, better car and wrecking the 89.

I am so glad that 15 year loop hole was closed down. What the brokers were up to then was pretty ordinary.

I agree with all the above, it is a really tidy car, if i can get it on the road for 7k or so, then financially i think im better off. I was told that as i have import approval, i should be able to get it under raws, just have to pay again.

For RAWS it will have to be taken back to stock. 89 was less constricted. Go under the old scheme if possible.

Interestingly, the old scheme is still actually open, they just changed the date backwards to 1988.

I am not an expert but I believe that since you have import approval for it, you should just be able to register it with a blue slip etc.

The other one we imported at the same time needed compliance, mine doesnt have an aus vin/compliance plate

and how stock is stock, or is it more a case of importers getting cosy with compliance shops who dont notice exhaust, wheels and turbos?

interesting, maybe the approval was not the old SEVS, not 15 year old. Because the whole point about the 15 year / Pre 88 rule, is that the car does not have to meet ADRs or be complied.

I am not sure you will be able to switch it over to REVS compliance if that is not how it was imported either.

Hi mate, just to confirm, by the old scheme are you referring to the previous 15 year old rule or the old compliance scheme?

Yeah, i was told i would have to reapply for import approval under raws

I think the 15year rule, i had to store it in japan for a month as it was a little too new when i bought it

anyway spoke to the rms and all i need is a vsccs certificate(adr compliance test) which is $880 and a blue slip.

As far as the mods go, the engineer said they dont effect the vsccs,, but his paperwork would still say rb30, and the turbo/brakes wouldnt be engineered, i guess it comes down to whether i can get a blue slip with the motor and turbo

Just to add more info -

If your car has import approval under the old 15 year old rule (where 1989 onwards vehicles were allowed) you don’t need to go through any process which requires a “Compliance” plate. You need to get your car engineered as per how you would have previously done it when it was freshly imported. For an ’89 GTR it means, side intrusion bars, fuel filler restrictor, child restraints anchors etc etc

You should already have your import approval certificate so no need to reapply for another one under the new scheme. You need to get your car engineered then follow the next relevant step as per whatever state you’re in. Not familiar with how NSW does it, in VIC it would be a road worthy certificate – you get the idea.

As far as having a big single etc, personally I think you’re pushing it a bit as chances are low you’ll get an engineer to put his/her name against that approval sign off for a car that was imported 7 years ago.

Hope that helps. I know all this as I’m in a similar situation so checked all this first before getting my ’89 GTR rebuilt and road reg.

Oh hah you beat me to it :)

Yeah that's the old 15 year rule and that's all you need. I'm getting my one done in a few months too after a body restoration. No crazy turbo upgrades so should be a bit easier.

Good luck, mate.

    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
    • Fair enough, I am in no way a tire expert so I'm not familiar with all the terms and conditions. I'll definitely note down the AD09 to potentially try in the future. Rain is not too big of a concern for now as I will probably only drive in the rain when I have to. And considering I still lack experience driving the GTR I'd more than likely take it easy too. I have coilovers in the car but as I barely got to drive so far I never bothered to even check if they are adjustable haha. The suspension is almost entirely old and worn as well so I suppose when I eventually fix that in the future that would make a huge difference.
    • There's not a great deal to report here .... except ...... FOR .... LSD!!!  I bought a Quaife LSD from the UK and shipped it here .... Wish I'd just bought locally cause the shipping and duty was $700! But there were so many diffs used in the E90s I just wanted to be absolutely certain I was getting the right one so I spoke with a supplier in the UK who builds race cars and they have heaps of experience with the E90s.  I pulled the diff out which was seriously awesome - I've never done anything like that before, I must have watched 1000 videos on YT about it as well as consulting the Bentley manual. It was super easy in the end. The diff was delivered to the awesome folks at Hornsby Diffs and will be back in a few weeks. I also replaced the diff bushings with some Nolathane ones.  Really looking forward to getting it back and getting back to the track or even the skidpan.
    • yeah... the 13kg/mm springs weren't always in there, I had 10kg/mm but doing a few SMSP commanded heavier front springs. It's so good now going into T1 and T2, just need more seat time and real tyres.
