So you had the Retrofit done?

The reason:

In 1989, the Australian Government restricted the use of refrigerant R12 under the Ozone Protection Act, thus requiring replacement of the use of R12 with the environmentally friendly R134a gas.

R12 to R134a conversion (retro-fitting) for older vehicles conditioned to use the R12 gas, as R12 gas is no longer available to consumers.

Think there is more to it than just changing from R12 to R134a.

Also any shop that is still doing R12 would be putting their livelihood at risk :(

Yes it's different stuff though it's called hychill and will more than likely replace 134a , I had the oil changed system evacuated and r134a added lasted one day before over pressure , guys are traders on sau and very good to deal with but my research says maybe too much gas was added or something as 32's are designed for r12 which runs at less head pressure, who did yours? Do you know how much oil and gas was added?

Hychill will not replace R134a. The only reason it became popular was due to a legislative loophole, which is now being closed.

Meaning, misinformed and unlicensed business/traders were technically able to purchase the gas and consequently service peoples cars.

As an ARC licensed mechanic, my advice would be to take it to a licenced business who knows what they are doing.

Yes absolutely could be I just worry cause the amount if guesswork with volumes and pressures and if there is a better gas that works at specs posted on the compressor why not look into it? It was actually working very well till the relief valve opened but this other gas is much more efficient and runs less pressure it's used in many older fords and Holden's that are just not suited to 134a anyway I will look into costs as it can be bought locally and see if someone will do it for me otherwise I could but a manifold and DIY

With the 134 conversion I have spoken to a few shops, some say need new filter and tx valve oil etc some say different hi low switch some say nothing just evacuate and recharge its a bit confusing , at least hychill is seemingly compatable with all systems from what I read

And I wrote that before your post came up on my phone in case your confused lol I just don't want to go through another compressor, parts cannot be purchased for them so it's second hand or big bucks for a new one if they can still be bought so I was just trying to reduce the workload on the poor old thing but if I can't then I can't

Yeah that is fair enough, but the thing with air con is that you can't half do it. In for a penny, in for a pound. And you really have to know what you are doing. If you think that's bad, spare a thought for some cool room systems that use 404 gas. Its $300+ per kg.

I did a compressor change on an underground chiller that took over a hundred kilos of r12, most big chillers still use it cos its the shit.

Also fridge gas got a new environmental tax or some such in the last year or so. That's why "$100 regassess" aren't advertised as much anymore, it costs way more in refridgerant.

The chiller I did was a baby my boss said, at that was only one side of it, it ran parallel compressor ccts. It was cooling water for a swampy that was lucky if it dropped 2deg off ambient air temp, mines have to much money lol. Bit off topic though.

to op change your dryer/receiver and vac out properly and pressure test, then regass while checking your pressures and temps and there shouldn't be any dramas.

Well I ended up doing it myself after system was professionally evacuated previously . I got a rig , oil with uv and hychill, I know it is probably not legal and frowned upon but what's the difference with other things we do ourselves ? Anyway it's nice and cool pretty easy to do hopefully it lasts if not the can only cost $21 so worth the risk if it doesn't and I will hard wire fan to come on with a/c button too just to help things along.

    • (it is a brand new ported mellings pump) I suspect the lack of pressure is due to the leak. It was *not* that low in other logs of oil pressure in the past. It wasn't that hot either, but not far off.
    • Would a Mellings oil pump be a viable option  From my time with a LS, and talking to tuners and LS specialists, the "weak" OEM oil pump is one of the first things they recommend to swap out if I was going to give the engine any high RPM I opted for a Mellings high volume, with the high pressure springs and I never had a issue with it Cost wise they are not expensive in the scheme of things 
    • Just bought a 2002 Stagea 250tRS VR-X Four AERO VQ25DET and spent the last two weekends cleaning and detailing it.. still have to do the wheels and the engine bay but the rest of it came up nice. Imported 2011 to S.A. and I'm the third owner since it was imported. I met the guy who brought it over, he went to Japan and picked out the car, bought it and ordered the wheels. He also gave me a list of stuff he did to the car with receipts. Coil overs (I have the original springs), 3" exhaust from the dump pipe back no cat, Custom dump pipe,(I have the original exhaust), Plenum spacer, 18" custom Work XSA wheels (need restoring, I've made a start..), Shift kit put through the 5 speed tiptronic auto, TV and menus/screens changed to english, Australian DTV tuner installed in rear. I've just had four new discs and new pads as well as all the fluids including the brake fluid replaced. I have all the receipts for the last 15 years and the import papers in a nice folder. Car looks great, goes like hell but fuel economy is not a thing lol.. pics next..
    • I ended up in this rut again lol, and used a shit ton of filler. One thing I can't understand is, even after using a big long block and going in long X pattern strokes, I always end up at bare metal again with no filler, and my repair started at one end of the door and now I've chased my tail to almost the other end of the door. I was thinking of hitting the panel with a hammer where it might be a high spot and making everything low then filling it, I did this on a small section on my other door by mistake and I think I fixed it lol. Is this a bad idea? The other thing is with guidecoat, whether it's the powder or spray, after I sand all the guide coat off, it doesn't reveal anything for me in terms of high spots and low spots and makes it especially hard when it's bare metal (at least in powdered form), am I doing something wrong here, or likely a high spot I keep going over and creating valleys? Lastly, stupid question but, is it possible that after sanding if I only sand over the filler area where I know to be a dent that it's impossible for me to dig into that dent? Unless there are other problems which I missed.
