Well, Im the proud owner of an R32 GTST. Have had the car for a month or two now. but in the last 3 days i have been pulled over twice! and both times i have got a ticket saying im driving a restricted vehicle..

The claim that my car is over the power to weight ratio limit.

Im on my P's, and they claim that while im on my P's i must not be driving a car that is over 125Kw per 1000kg. Now on their little sheet that the have with all the stock car weights and powers it says mine is like 125.4kw per ton... yes. point 4 of a fricken kilowatt.

It was the same bloke that got me both times. one at Knox (im in vic btw) and the other in Ringwood near eastland.

He says if he gets me again i will see him in court.. :D

So what can i do?

Has anyone had this trouble before?

Can i detune my car, dyno it, weigh it and say that im not over? or doesnt it work like that? what could i do? anyone have any idea where i could find out?

Thanks all.

all help is much apreciated.

Thanks again in advance :)

Welcome to the world of owning a Skyline :D

It will only get worse. lol.

For example, i have owned about 5 cars before my skyline, one of them being a done up commodore. and i never got a ticket or lost a point, i had been pulled over once or twice for a breath test but nothing else.

I owned my skyline for 2 months, have been defected a few times and now currently have 2 points left on my licence.

gotta love your imports :D

How trust worthy is that site though

what says its right over the police's source of information.

Anyone know if there is a nissan website saying how much it weighs?

I also have the actual handbook thingy. which prolly has the weight in it though its kinda all in japanese and i cant read it.

if anyone can read it could have a quick squiz and tell me what page number it is on..

Cheers.

Should i just go down to the station and show them the information? but like i said. who says that website is right?

hmm

well if that site is right then it puts me shit outta luck

that makes it 125.5 kw to the ton

What can i do about it?

i have only just bought the car. dont want to sell it.

is there anything i can do?

i think it would be worthwhile going to Nissan and finding out the exact specifiactions of your car. If it turns out that you are actually under, then take it to court and prove your innocense (spell?). There is a similar case in the Victoria section, have a read, there was heaps of feedback, i don't know if it helped much though.

I think that the later post August 91 R32's are heavier. 1260 for up to then and 1320 for a type M post Aug 91. May put you out of reach of that ratio. Especially if u find some Nissan documentation to back u up. I hope urs is post aug 91 cos I would love for that to happen :D

Guys its not current power vs current weight.

it is factory power vs factory weight...

yes it is stupid - you can buy a non turbo GTS and wack a RB26DETT and probably get away with it since the factory specs of a GTS power to weight is ok

It sounds like either vic cops or this cop in particular is out to get P platers in skylines at the moment - think this is the 3rd thread on this i have seen on here about the same thing, similar area in the last couple of weeks.

I'm going to be really harsh here. Why didn't you check the specifications before you bought the car? Your car is too highly powered for P's. The Law is the Law, and Police issue guidebooks are the Law that's enforced.

Selling the car might be a bit over the top, perhaps garage it until you're off your P's? Either that, or risk your licence by driving around without P's up.

That's my opinion. You can't claim ignorance of the Law - it's no excuse.

geez, 125.4 when its supposed to be 125, all i can say is that u have experienced a great deal of bad luck, i mean couldnt the cop let u go without going into such a technicality since its pretty much on the limit. Fair enough if the cop decided to get you for power to weight if he saw u doin something stupid but really cmon...

the best of luck to you...

I recently imported an 89 r32 gtst type M, and the arrival notice states that it weighs 1320kgs. If yours is the same as this then given the factory output of 160kw, wouldn't that make the power to weight ratio 121.21kw per tonne? This is the gross weight though, not dry weight which they may go by. Anyway hope this may help.

yes its factory weight and factory power output at the flywheel, didnt think r32s were not allowed, thought it was r33s and up(or any GTR), i dont think u can detune it as like i said b4, factory weight and factory power, things you can do:

stay out of Knox, its notorious for cops picking on p platers and using the power/weight restriction on them, take off the 'GTST' sticker on the back of the car, run a plumb back bov, dont give any indication its turbo( no turbo timers, visable coolers etc). it will help a bit

    • Hello, sorry for being late to join the discussion, but my clock just died on me.   Ive tried to look at Michaels digital clock repair.docx and it doesnt work maybe the file has expired.   Please let me know if you can re upload it or take some youtube videos to show us how to get the clock installed? thanks
    • I thought that might be the case, thats what I'll start saving for. Thanks for the info
    • Ps i found the below forum and it seems to be the same scenario Im dealing with. Going to check my ECU coolant temp wire tomorrow    From NICOclub forum: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Thu Apr 11, 2013 7:23 am I am completely lost on this. Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
    • My return flow is custom and puts the return behind the reo, instead of at the bottom. All my core is in the air flow, rather than losing some of it up behind the reo. I realise that the core really acts more as a spiky heatsink than as a constant rate heat exchanger, and that therefore size is important.... but mine fits everything I needed and wanted without having to cut anything, and that's worth something too. And there won't be a hot patch of core up behind the reo after every hit, releasing heat back into the intake air.
