I have used R32 GTR, R33 GTR, R33 GTR N1 and very shortly I will be sticking a set of R34 GTR cams in an RB20. I have not noticed much difference between the different models, if any.

So, firstly, Hi, new to the forum/site.

I am currently a member of the SkylineOwners club in the uk.

A few of us have been interested by your GT-R Cam experiences.

Basically, we would like to know.

Does it actually work? There seems to be fors and againsts in this very thread :(

IF it does work or for you only, what is the cookbook for it.

for instance, What else do you need to have to get them to run properley?

Cheers Folks,

Alex

Stay tuned whilst us convicts get it sorted, they are coming out of my car today so its easier to find the fault with the car.... if all goes to plan and the car gets tuned, then i will then throw them back in and see if A) my current prob returns, & B) can be easily tuned around C) they make any more power

Hopefully there is some definitive answers soon. My cefiro lands in 5 weeks and I want to put GTR cams in whilst I change the timing belt... so if I have to get specific BNR series Cams Im hoping this thread will reveal which ones it is. I will hopefully be adding in GTR injectors aswell so I will get a decent tune at the same time as my mate does alot of ECU stuff (makes a heap of Nissan Daughterboards for ECUs and chips S13, Z32, R3x etc etc).

JK

Stay tuned whilst us convicts get it sorted

Lol, not still bitter about that eh guys?

Aside from the humour :D, much appreciate are the efforts you guys have been making over this :(

It will at least let me know if I can ask a premium for my old Cam's so I can get nice uprated ones :):D

  • 1 month later...

sorry for digging up an old thread, but i have the opportunity to get some 33 GTR cams at a decent price. I have a redtop ECCS rb20det in my R31 gts-x and after reading a couple of threads like this im finding it hard to come to any conclusion. I would be purchasing them now, but only fitting them with aftermarket cam gears after bigger turbo and fmic goes in. Im after better response, low down torque and higher power generally throughout mid-high rev range.

Any thoughts here?

if everyone pulled their finger out of their arse and tried it then more people will be able to tell you of the results. do it, try it, tell us how you go. i'm sick of the armchair tuners not having a real go.

so far 2 people tried it at home and failed. I tried it at the mechanics and it worked fine. at least Roy and BBenny had a go and i'm sure they will get it working eventually as they are actually doing it rather than just talking about it...

Roy had some mechanical/tribological issues when the cams were fitted. I have the head and cams and I'm waiting for an opportunity to determine the root cause of the problem. Until then I'll leave it to Roy to discuss the result but I would suggest at this stage getting any cams intended for install checked by an engine reconditioner before installation.

Looking at how tha cam has galled with the alloy in the head and seized, ill put a case of beer on bent inlet cam. Its the onlt thing that makes sense....other then the cam diam being a few thou out changing the tolerance in the journal. The most damaged cap happens to be the cap that was relpaced during installation...silly question, will having the front 6 caps evenly torqued up with no no.7 bearing cap installed bother the cam.

For 7 days it would have undergone bending forces as the very end of the cam was not bolted into the head.... i doubt the valve springs would have exerted suffecient a force to load the cam beyond its elastic region....who knows?

I have seen and laughed at a few stories where cams have been snapped while being installed, where they have not been torqued down in sequence, but put in front- to- back. The pressure on the lobes on the cam would appear to have sufficient force to snap it, I wouldn't doubt it could "merely" bend them instead.

...I wouldn't doubt it could "merely" bend them instead.

The snapping thing and the no.7 bearing cap damage tells me the cam is bent and its bent because the front 6 caps were torqued evenly but no.7 left off until i could find a relacement.... the load onth ecam increses the longer the lenght of unsupported cam so sould have though with having no.6 in place it would not have been a problem...oh well.

Got any RB25/RB20 cams laying around Mr Parts Supplier? RB26 with sane lift?

Roy I have 2 NA cams I can loan you if req.

LOL...sadly i do as well because i was recently mistakingly supplied an NA head which resulted in a rather high compression turbo engine. Looking at the specs idont think the NA cams woul do much...i need some 260 / 8.5mm cams.

After that the R32 isnt going to be touched, all my spare cash will be spent on a MK I Escort :D

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
