So i have foam coming out of the radiator which means headgasket is gone. I have been told that getting a new RB20 is cheaper than doing the head purely because of the whole machining process. So I thought I might buy another RB20 with box (I need a new box as well) and clean it up and put it in when I have the time. So I will need a few things...

RB20DET: Where do i source this from? Sure i can buy one of someone who has a "vgc" rb20 for sale but i'm working on a bit of a budget and would like to buy an engine which I feel confident in knowing that it will work.

Gearbox: I have contacted Nissan A1 Wrecking on this before and they seem to give you a reconditioned, not serviced, box for $850 which I don't think is too bad. Is this the right place to source the box?

With both of the main parts sorted now Will i need?:

Clutch: Could i reuse my current one? or because it's going onto a new block will i need a new one, if yes, Where do i source a cheap Exedy sports tuff clutch?

What else will I need for this? / What else should I do while i am replacing an engine?

('92 R32 GTS-T) and I am located Brisbane.

Any second hand engine or gearbox is going to be a gamble.

I would check what they mean by reconditioned gearbox, because that seems pretty cheap. However no one wants the 20 box so that could be why.

Of course you can reuse your current clutch. You just have to be happy to pull the box off to replace it later on. Most people replace the clutch while the box is off, depending on the condition of it.

Before you get carried away I would want to be 100 percent sure it's the head gasket and not something silly.

You can buy kits to check if the head gasket is blown. They work by detecting hydrocarbons in the coolant.

You wouldn't want to pull it all out of lying to find out the previous owner put some weird shit I the radiator to fix a leaky water pump......

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
