I'm considering going to road legal semi-comp tyres for all round use when my current rubber is shot, this is for a couple of reasons;

1. - Although my GTS25t remains daily drivable it's really only used for fun (it's travelled 12k in the 2.5yrs I've owned it) & as such I couldn't care less about tyre noise, tread life & ride quality.

2. - I'd like maximum possible all round grip.

3. - Because I can :D

If I get 5-10k out of a set of tyres I'll be happy.

Below are a few of the options I'm considering. I'd like to get feedback from anyone who's using/used any of them? Or any other choices I've not listed? I'm aware of the Bridgestone RE540S & Toyo Proxes RA-1 but neither come in the right sizes :(

I intend on running 235-245 17's - front 255-265 17's - rear

atm i on my second set of formular R and i've have used falken TEFLON azenis before also. 235 or 255 in 17" dunlop is absolutely awesome in terms of grip. Well, the amount of grip they have makes other performance tyre manufacturers lies awake at night sweating!!! and they're not that noisy , well i can't hear it abve my 3.5" exhaust.

Thanks for the info mate. Which Formula R's are you running? How do you find cold tyre & wet weather grip levels?

The Dunlop D01J (one of the Formula R range) is ~$425 (235/45/17) I think you probably meant 255/40/17. I'd guess a 255/40/17 D01J would be ~$500.

wet weather is something i tread very carefull with street slicks, but the formular R is good, not brilliant, but they don't go off as fast as other inferior tyres, but the tyre of choices if u wanna used them 18 months after the day of purchase is the yokohamas , i don't think they go off at all.

I use Formula R's on the mini, and've just fitted AzenisRS to the GTR. I've had a bit more experience with Azenis on my WRX and I must say the tyres are awesome, especially when you get a bit of heat into them on the track! They're the best value for money tyre around in my opinion.

I paid $340 a corner for 255/40/17 Falken Azenis RS last week.

I use 235/45/17 Dunlop Formula Rs all round on the track (R33 GTR rims).

I also use 265/35/18 Dunlop Forumla Rs (REAR ONLY) on the road... I use Falken AZENIS ST-115 on the front for a little more wet grip so I can still steer the bastard :P

As you can tell, I think the Dunlops are the duck's nuts. But basically if I hit boost in the wet, it's all over. I turn the boost controller off and basically crawl to my destination. They're useless in the wet. I took it to Wakefield one day and it was raining... Basically as soon as I touched the accelerator, the car spun. Ever since then, I've been scared of the car when it's raining, which is good I suppose, because it's made me drive VERY VERY slowly in the wet.

In the dry though, they're awesome... Stickier than every other tyre straight off, and if you warm them up, they're like glue to the tarmac. It'll take a bit to warm them up though, a small burnout or you'll have to link quite a few corners at good speed to get some heat into the rubber.

How you doing?

I tried the RE540s Bridgestones but didn't like them.

I bought 4 255/40/17 Toyo RA1s for the R33 & they handle

extemely well but I have had trouble hooking up with my

3 litre engine.They are currently off the rims(being polished)

& I have 4 Nitto Extreme 555R 275/40/17s coming from Jap.

The extra height/width should help me get off the line.

I run 255/40/17 on the SS ute & was going to use 2 for that.

If you are interested I may sell the other 2.They have only done

7 passes & are still newish.They cost me around $550 each.

Maybe sell for $400 each?Can you fit a 255 on the front too?

Let me know if you want to look at them.

What is the reason for your dislike for the RE540s?

I have a dilema in that my Falken GRB II rears lasted only 9000km (fronts OK only 50% worn) and I didn't even punish them as much as I wanted! I want good traction, good price and half decent wear rate. $400-500 per tyre too dear for me if I'm gonna wear them both out once a year!

Went to a hillclimb meet recently and most of the road cars had the RE540s and the others a mix of Dunlop Rs, Toyo RA1s etc. The RE540s are the best price by far, $330-340 (18/265/35) and the guys using them love them.

The reasons alot of normal drivers go for the RE540s is that , it give very early warning before it let go, but then it absolute friction coefficient is somewhat compromise by the gradual break away effect. simply to put it the tyres are easier to drive fast on if your average behind the wheels, where as the formular R are there and not there beyond it performance envelope.

I'm very interested in the RE540S myself mate! I've had a few prices on the 540's, I've also had good feedback from a few Skyline owners (GT-R & GTS) on them. They're looking good so far!

I'm happy I was incorrect about the sizes too :cool:

Being able to spin the rears is still fun but I'd like to see how it goes when I can get some really good grip! :P

I recently got the Whiteline rear subframe align/lock kit & did some more rear camber work (thanks Bug's for the kit!). I had a decent aligning session & set camber @ -1.5 front & -0.5 rear. Traction on my current rubber is still crap, better than it was though!

I remember when you were telling me about a S15 that launched unbelievably.

Those have the Diff's from the GTR apparently.

Slap a better center in.. Might help with the hook up??

I think i saw them from UAS for $500.

I swear that sometimes in first gear when it comes on to boost quickly that it spins one wheel more than the other.

I don't doubt a better diff will help but I don't think I need to go to that extent, yet!

It wouldn't be in 1st gear that you've seen my diff single spin, 'cause I almost never "really" nail it in first (not enough to light it up) It's in 2nd that I find things get a bit loose! Throttle control would help but I'd like to get as much power down as I can.

Sorry Matt I worded the single spin bit wrong.

I was refering to My Diff.

It feels like the right wheel spins up more than the left sometimes.

Second always spins up two.

The only difference is i have to snap second gear to spin and get loose in second u dont.

Well i am now able to layout the money for a new turbo (Just) but i need to find the HKS GT2530 that i want.

Oh just thought of an idea.

Slap a heavier flywheel on there.. :D

Well more weight around the edges should help u stop the wheel spin a little though the lower gears.

I noticed when i had the lightened flywheel fitted that is what made first gear suck.

Realistically its not an option .. Heavier flywheel.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
    • You mean you will regret it for drifting duties? I don't quite follow.
