i'd additionally like to know if there are any importers who are based in japan, thus cutting out the need for the middlemen who are often trouble.

usually you'll find that japanese car EXPORTERS (not importers ) based in japan will do everything up to loading you car on the ship. ie FOB, dereg etc. but after that, they will ave no idea about customs clearance, duties, compliance, registration etc in your country.

I deal with a few agents in japan for used parts, and most of em also attend the used car auctions, but they will only do FOB, no more.

Importing a car into Australia is childs play, almost anyone can do it. Finding an agent in Japan you can trust, is a different matter. Most of the agents used by importers locally are contracted and are very reputable so they're a safe bet. You'll probably find this to be true in the UK as well.
