Hi everyone, Greetings from Darwin, that's my first post here - so... I bought my first Skyline last week(r33 gts-t) and it started blowing blue smoke couple days ago every time when I've been driving steady for a while and then put my foot down to 4000-5000rpms on 1st and 2nd gear.

Also all the oil breather hoses were either broken or blocked and oil was leaking everywhere and got oil pressure warning light all the time, anyway replaced these hoses and serviced the engine(no i didn't overfilled with engine oil) and now it's blowing blue smoke. Pulled the turbo/intercooler pipes off and there is fair a bit of oil there but turbo is all good, no odd shaft play. Could it be the oil rings ? Cheers

Is that with the blue ring coming out of rocker cover ? Pulled that hose off and tried to blow air through the valve, it works only one way, can suck air out from engine but can't blow it back.

PCV looks okay, looks fairly new

You can test if you want, its just a check valve so you should be able to blow through it in one direction and not the other

Catch cans arent really necessary on stock or near stock cars, im not sure what is done to yours

If that's how to test it then yes it works.

I'm thinking that because of that one blocked breather hose on top of rocker cover was completely crunched that no air could get through, engine had too high oil pressure all the time and old owner just kept driving it, so it blew the turbo seals coz it seems to have bit too much oil in intake?

Yeah it's near stock:

3" cat back exhaust

Front mount intercooler

Pod filter

stock turbo and turbo controller at the moment

Does the oil level drop now that youve fixed it? Im wondering if its just burning off oil that was in the wrong spot because it wasnt breathing properly. May be turbo but its good to rule out cheaper/easier things first

Check your inter-cooler piping for oil, especially at the lowest point.

We had exactly the same issue on a R32 GTR after a track day, found the blowby oil got into the intake piping when we pulled the intercooler off, every time we got the revs up hard and onto boost it was smoking.

Cleaned out the oil, problem went away, then fitted a catch can to stop it happening again, it never returned.

Thanks guys, will clean the intercooler and piping out soon as i got time + replace spark plugs after it's not burning oil anymore. Definitely will fit a catch can, redirecting oil to intake seem like a bad idea.

Alright, now i have a boost leak so i pulled some hoses/pipes off to see what's going on. Found that someone has blocked off the bov with a piece of tinnie, what's the go with that ? See picture below :

Built a pressure tester to find the boost leaks, got rid of all the leaks but still feels like boost leak and lack of power on higher revs. So i pulled off the turbo, intercooler, pipes/hoses. Found some pieces of metal inside the intercooler and engine oil has turned black(just serviced about 600km's ago). Turbo has a slight shaft play inside-out but not side to side, cold side wheel looks a bit rough. Drained all the engine oil, luckily didn't found any metal pieces from oil. Apparently turbo was just replaced before i bought the car so might it be that f**kers blew the old turbo up and didn't clean the intercooler??? Still doesn't explain why I get 15psi of boost and that sucking noise like a boost leak+ stalling when turbo is supposed to kick in. Might need to start looking for a new turbo...

Yeah mate, cleaned the intercooler and piping with degreaser and hosed all the dirt out. I didn't put anything back together because my concern now is what kind of damage all that has done already. Been just browsing different topics here for hours already, reading about Kinugawa turbos at the moment, probably takes me another couple days to finish that thread lol.

Also i just remembered now that when i was doing the boost leak test, @10psi oil dipstick popped out and released all the pressure which seems bit odd on such low pressure.

Forgot to take a picture but here's a picture from Google how i did the pressure test:

Still trying to figure out whats wrong with it, made a short video of that whistle sound.

Wanna get my car running properly again, might go for a new turbo if can't find the problem soon.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
