Ii just bought the lastest issue of Auto Salon.

Why? Well it has a Street Machine knock off car of the year thing going, and part of the criteria was lap times at Wakefield.

LOL...looking at the lap times they are a bit on the ordinary side when you consider that one of the top SAU Lap Times is an almost STD R33 GTST about 2 seconds quicker then the eventual winner (A Trust powered R32 GTR)

Some of these cars had over 400rwkws (GTRs etc), the cars may look trick, have huge dyno numbers, but getting the whole thing to work as a package sure can be expensive. :)

Doesnt take away fromt he fact that im sure the owners fo the cars are the happiest blokes on the planet, but may explain why they are not always raced as they firstly cost a fortune and too many ppl waiting for the cars to demolish records, be it 1/4 mile or lap times....and when they dont you get hillbillies like myslef walking around with a big grin sayinmg "my car is quicker" :whackit:

Is it still at ice?

:( can i retract that comment. Car isnt ready... i was supplied an NA head so all got bolted back together and engine is pinging its head off  Ice have been good about all of this but its now well past a joke, i NEED my car back for work as my lack of transport is meaning things arent getting done and i have a big audit in 9 days time.

I reckon they should stop pretending their bling bling Dyno Queens are *wicked* road and track machines. They may feel like they go fast, but only same way it feels fast driving an Excel with the windows down...perception and reality are worlds apart.

Have been thinking if I should responsed to this thread, I feel it needs a alternative veiw posted.

I bought this mag also, not just to read that article (but also to see a photo of my car and my name in print!!).

The contest is called "Street car of the year", not 'driver of the year' or 'wakefieldpark expert of the year'. I liked the idea. Not only do I love some of those car's, especially Daniel's gold Supra, but I also admire and respect the work that these guys put into their cars.

Sure maybe my car could beat most of them on the drag strip, and maybe you or your mates could beat them at Wakefield park, but thats only a very small section of the competition.

Take my car as an example, in the right hands my car is capable of at least a high 10 second pass, but because i have only done an official 12.10 pass does that make the CAR a sh1tbox ,i think not. Same with these cars/guys.

I'm sure if someone drove gerry's GTR around wakefield who knew the track and the car,and also took it down the strip at 10/10s.......it could be a better result. Remember, the purpose of the competition.... 'street car of the year', if you think your car is better then i suppose we'll see you with next years trophy. These guys take a risk by putting themselves and their cars out there. Lets admire that!

Hi there and thanks KILL HSV

The times at drag combat were consistant 12's. Did my best time of 12.10. I am still having problems with gear selection. Mostly with 3rd. Crunched the gears a few times and sometimes missed 3rd all together (5th!!). At the end, in the final I knew I just had to win, by beating Dave who was only doing 12.9 at his best. So I decided not to push it, just had to beat him over the line.

Hopefully in the near future I will learn, become more confident with smoother gear changes and break into the 11's. Paul (my husband) will be trying to get into the 10's, I feel it is about time he had a turn. Wish us luck!

I said...

Each car is modified for its owner, only have to look at my car, most ppl dont look twice but i love it (when its running  ) As long as the owner is happy then more power to them, the S15s and GTRs are mega trick, thats the reason i bought the mag to see how they went as i have always wondered why magazines havent encouraged this sort of competition before...get out there and enjoy the cars

Dont get me wrong... i totally respect the fact they were out there giving it a go, because like i said

and when they dont you get hillbillies like myslef walking around with a big grin saying "my car is quicker" :whackit:

That said you cant deny the fact that these cars are meant to be the ultimate in modified street vehicles, why modify it to go slower, and you cant say they aint modding it on the pretence of more power/performance as they have spent big money on the engine...if they werent chasing performance then they would have left the engine std and just stuck with having trick looking/sounding cars.

The average punter would look at the power figures, the tyres/suspension etc and 99% of ppl woudl think they would eat every car out there...not struggle to keep pace with a std GTST

Next year ill give the contest a go :( but i bet they wouldnt even let my car in the SAS/MAS hall let alone feature it in the mag

We have a standard gearbox, re-built with cyrogenic treated internals. I am used to the Skyline, I have owned it for 3 years, but totally new to racing. Drag Combat was the first time I had ever been to a race track, let alone race the car. I first attempted launching 3 days before the event. (I did a 12.12 on my 2nd ever pass.) The more I concentrated on getting 3rd gear the more missed the gate. I was strangling the stick! Instead of using soft hands!

Currently looking at developing a 5th gear 'lockout' to help me. Cheers

Roy the killer cars at MAS this year were the Winfield GTR and the beasts on the Fang Artisits stand with Leewahs R33 GTR. I don't think anything was nearly as popular except that WRX bathtub. Kept waiting for them to fill it with water and bubbles and put the promo girls in (in bikinis, you filthy man)

Sure bling keeps some people happy, but you and I know that it may be in vain since there is pretty high probability of crumping it bad on the track, so why bother. Neat clean and a clear purpose impresses me much more than chrome. If I want leather and comfort, a Soarer V8 GTLtd does me just fine. I would be troubled taking something special out too as some ignoramus would love to take out their jealousy and damage it.

cool, no idea what that cyrogenic stuff is, never heard of it, do u drive ur cars on the road? cos like sometime about a month ago maybe i saw two silver gtrs, on george st. on a friday night, thought it could be u.

the car that one that comp in the mag the GTR was totally street legal and it ran a 12 sec pass now how many of us can say that there car is totally street legal and can run a time like that.

Because im almost positive there are not to many people out there that have had an engineer check everything out on there car.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
