Hey all.

I'm 23 and from Germany, September last year I bought a mildly modded 1995 GTR Vspec.
Looks great and was fun so far, but I already have a list of issues of various severity that I need to take care of, potentially growing longer the closer I look.

I just hope I'm not in over my head, I really want to keep the car and work towards it becoming great. I hope y'all will help me out in getting there, I am positive I will need help sooner rather than later to figure out how to proceed.

greetings, some pics of the car I posted to imgur.

Welcome Jan,

It's very likely that you are in over your head. You'll just have to learn to swim hard and fast! These old rust buckets have more ways to bankrupt us than almost any other car. But hopefully there's nothing wrong that ruins the whole show!

We can help a fair bit. There's plenty here who've been fixing these things for >25 years.

cheers

Yeah rust is sadly also a bit of an issue on my car. Doubt there is many cars out there that actually have no rust in those aeas. The strut towers look fine but some of the surounding metal sheets show a bit of brown cancer peeking out from in between. I hope I can make do with external remedies and won't have to rip open the whole front end anytime soon. It looks somewhat minor compared to some shit I have seen online.

I have worked on a few cars but I expect the RB26 to be my first 'engine out' job at some point.

Yeah it's a thing unfortunately, almost every Skyline has some rust somewhere.

Do you have another car? If the GTR isn't your only car I'd say relax, it's going to be fine. Don't let the car bankrupt you, just take it slow. Learn as you go and only spend what you can afford to.

God no. I would have never bought that car if it was going to be my only one and daily driver. I don't intend to go bankrupt but I don't really want to give up on it even if it ends up eating more money than expected.

Research research research, and tackle the important things first, like the rust, because as a wise old hippie and some crazy horses once said "rust never sleeps"

Nothing good comes easy and fast, and nothing that comes easy and fast is typically good

I'm always a glass half full kinda guy. This will be a great project and the finished product will be awesome.

yeah I try to be positive. Time will tell what becomes of it. Realistically my only other choice than to just deal with all the issues is to walk away and just sell it agai, at a loss.

I know a fair bit about these cars and knew before buying. I will try to deal with the rusty spots without tearing apart the metalwork for now. Sooner or later I probably will have to bite the bullet and do (or ge done) the arguably worst job an a 33/34 Skyline.

yeah I have brown peeking out from in between some metal sheets close to the hood hinges. Strut towers look fine, even around the edges.

the one that looks the worst is the panel(s) going away right near the firewall on the passenger side, from underneath. Driver side does not look that bad.

Welcome.

That colour looks amazing on your car!

Focus on registration fails and safety items first.

Then, some of the nicer to haves.

I have(previously) used my GTR as a daily(with a dog box at one point) and it wasnt that big an issue at the time.

Keep us updated, as i would love to see progress.

Hey, yeah I really like the color. Only paint I'd rather have is KN6, but those are expensive.

Right now I'm trying to get the car to the point where I can get it tuned to 370hp so the whole setup can be driven legally, and pass the next inspection that is already due anyway.

Beyond that lots of rust fixing I'm afraid, winter project is most likely going to be a front end teardown and fixing the strut tower rust.

I know these can be driven daily but I don't think I will do so anytime soon. Will post a build thread soon with a list of issues and futute plans.

Cheers

    • Hello, sorry for being late to join the discussion, but my clock just died on me.   Ive tried to look at Michaels digital clock repair.docx and it doesnt work maybe the file has expired.   Please let me know if you can re upload it or take some youtube videos to show us how to get the clock installed? thanks
    • I thought that might be the case, thats what I'll start saving for. Thanks for the info
    • Ps i found the below forum and it seems to be the same scenario Im dealing with. Going to check my ECU coolant temp wire tomorrow    From NICOclub forum: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Thu Apr 11, 2013 7:23 am I am completely lost on this. Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. Rb25det s1 walbro255 fuel pump nismo fpr holset hx35 turbo fmic 3" exhaust freddy intake manifold q45tb q45 maf   Re: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Fri Apr 12, 2013 5:07 am No, I didn't. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
