R-compound tyres

searched and read various past threads

Waiting for my buddyclub P1s to arrive, and need to decide on tyres.

I wanted to get the new RE55s's. I read that only the 'wet compound' version is available at the moment? My question is, is it worth buying a set of these to use only in the dry -how much faster would they wear out compared to the dry compound? and does anyone know anything about availability of the other compounds?

(Ive been priced $400 for the 255/40/17 and $390 for 235/45/17, through Gordin Levin, not including SAUNSW discount)

My other alternative is the Falken RT-215. From what i have read, those that have used them seem to swear by them. Id love to hear from anyone who has used both RE55s and RT-215s.

Tempe priced the RT-215's at under $300, which would save me $400 on a set of 4, allowing me to get those braided lines i need!

So are the RE55s worth 100 extra per corner?! Intended use is ultimately track, but also street when the 19's are off.

When you spoke to Gordon Leven did they say only wet were available? I heard that 12 months ago but was pretty sure they are around by now.

$1400ish for a set of Re55s is a top price for some of the best tyres you can get.

I have not used the rt215s, but I am still willing to bet they are at least 2 seconds a lap slower than the re55s And I am happy to drive someone else's car back to back to prove it too

RE55S is a proper R compound... Azenis RT215 is a semi-slick pattern but street compound. I used Dunlop D01J Formula-Rs a few months ago before I put on the Azenis - if you're talking track use, difference is nite and day. Go the R compound rubber, don't waste ur time with Azenis. For day to day street and the occasional trackday, then Azenis is a good budget choice. since u have 2 sets of rims, just buy proper R rubber for ur 17s.

Find out the treadwear indicator on the side of the tyre. Quite often you can get the same make of tyre with varying treadwear ratings. The lower the rating the quicker it will wear, but generally the stickier the tyre.

Good luck getting them, I went up a few weeks back to get a set (255/40/17 - $280 a corner) and they had none in stock, and some should arrive soon. Got a call a week later from Tempe and they told me Falken have stopped distributing the RT-215 in 255/40/17 for the time being.

They did have the Falken RS-V04 which is a proper R compound semi slick for a similar price however.

Falken RS-V04 you can get them cheap baby i havent used them but for the price i would have to say give them a go... there wet weather version is very quick

Wet weather tyres will overheat the compound on a dry track not last very long.

As pete said above we used the wet weather version but there is a dry tyre as well, for around $1k its a cheap gamble. They are probably not as spectactular as the re55s but they will still be ahge step up from a road tyre
