the guy at nissan ferntree gully called me this arvo, tried telling me that Nissan said it may be normal for the gearbox's in this car to make running noise, i was honest and said that i had heard a little bit of running noise in mine and other r33 GTR's but you had to listen for it, where as this running noise in mine is louder than the engine! He said ok then, and to bring it in on Monday morning they need it for a week and will get it stripped down and looked at... so hopefully it gets sorted out from here.. but who knows...

Out of interest - anyone else have any whining/running noise in thier R33 GTR gearbox? if so how loud?

we run r33 gtr boxes in both our late model r32 gtrs and have NEVER heard a whining noise, before or after a rebuild.

I showed a friend the noise today, he knows a bit about Cars, not skylines in particular, but he thought it was the clutch....

And thats got my thinking, what if it isn't the gearbox, what if it is the clutch, or something to do with the gearbox install.... could either of these things cause this noise?

could be the clutch bearing making the noise

It can be the thrust bearing thats fine with me because they delivered a brand new one with the gearbox, so thats thier fault...

My old gearbox made the same noise, but not as bad when i first got it, then when we changed the clutch from the excedy heavy duty to this excedy twin place, and changed the thrust bearing to a new one the noise went away... i was happy... now when i've changed the gearbox and the thrust bearing its come back, twice as bad....

I showed Dean from UPI the noise, he seems to think its the thrust bearing since aftermarket clutchs like my twin plate generally use a smaller thrust bearing since the hole in the fingers is smaller... he's not certain but said that would be what he would do first..

I tend to agree, since when i put my clutch in i changed the thrust bearing which i got ordered from nissan, i think i was given the part number from the guy i bought the clutch off... the thrust bearing that came with the gearbox (that is in it now) is for a standard clutch... does anyone know anything about this?

there is a (bad) recording of the noise, you can hear when i push my clutch in because the noise stops... (this is from outside the car)

Ferni, i have the same whining sound that goes away when you press the clutch pedal in. only noticable in neutral but it doesn't sound as loud as yours, mine's more of a minor annoyance. also got an excedy clutch (not sure which one).

haven't had it checked out yet but i've been told it sounds like a thrust bearing.

let us know how you get on! good luck!

I have it too. Still there after I changed to a new clucth with a new thrust bearing AND had the box rebuilt with mostly new bearings! I was upset after all the money i put into rebuilting it, it still was there.

Had a listen to your and it doesnt sound exactly the same... might just be a recording. Does yours sound like a Dog box when u drive?

    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
