Okay, need some tips regarding long term storage.

The car is only going to be in my possession for about 2 weeks before i fly off to Europe for 6months. Once the compliance work is done, i want to prepare the car for storage. I want it to be completely looked after, if you will, in that i want it to be good when i get back.

What should I do? I'm going to put all new fluids and oils in all round, but in particular, I'm worried about the engine. What can i do to ensure its happy for 6 months unattended? Any other ideas for tyres, interior etc are also needed.

It will be in a closed garage, and can be started periodically if needed.

thanks in advance!

i suggest u stick ur car in one of those super sized vaccum space bags, u know the one that preserves food by sucking out all the air:D:D

if the cars gonna be garaged then its gonna be protected from the elements anyways so theres got goin to be any wear and fading of any sort. u only need to protect it from gathering dust in which a simple car cover will do. as for the engine i guess as long as it gets turned over once a week or so, maybe even driven around the block then there shouldnt be any real drama's thats if it was running fine in the first place. only concern that comes to mind is the fuel goin off maybe and droppin in RON?? so dont bother fillin it up full tank just a quarter so u can mix it with new fuel when u come back?? dunno, sounds stupid but thats what id probably do.

looked for the vac bags but no luck, strangely...?

As you say, the exterior is going to be fine, as it will be under a cover and garaged. I was thinking that maybe the internals will seize if its not exercised regularly. So i suppose if I give it some nice new oil, and have it turned over and warmed up every week it should be ok. Keeping the fuel down and just topping it up every week or two would keep it clear.

But i always thought there was more too it, like with rotaries you oil the inner parts of the engine.

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
