Gday all.

I have put this in "General Automotive" because it applies to cars in general but, I am pointing this discussion to Skylines in particular.

A bit of background first. I think that I am fairly musical and have a fairly good ear for pitch etc. My Wife does not profess to be the same but, can do something that I can only dream of.

What is it ?

Well..... One day we were sitting at Shellharbour on the South Coast with our backs to the passing traffic and she said "there's an R33" and sure enough when we looked behind us there it was.

We live very close to the Princes Hwy and have a constant stream of traffic to see (and listen to) and I am constantly amazed by her ability in this regard. I have been witness to this many times, including being able to pick R32/3, 300ZX and Silvia's etc as long as they have a decent exhaust.

Does anyone else have this ability, or know of anyone else that is able to do this ?

Referring to the title of this thread also......... What is the note of a Skyline ? By this, I mean is it "E", "A440", "B Sharp" (Joke for those musically inclined).

Well. There it is. Any comments / feedback etc etc.

ps. What about this for musical exhaust.

Listen to

*edit. Tried to add the F1 exhaust doing "When the Saints" but didn't work. I think most of you know the one I am talking about.*

wrx's sound like a 3 cylinder suzuki or a vw buggy!!

I reckon Im gettin better at pickin em(skylines) - especially cos I dont see many around these parts!! :)

Any one got a guitar tuner with exterior mic??? put it up to your exhaust and see what note it holds (of course some would vary with different zorst systems)..

i can do this aswell with skylines, silvias, supras, ford sixes, commodore v6s ( they make a stupid noise with an exhaust, especially the vn autos - i cant stand that noise, reminds me of something grinding steel )

the sound of an RB is something thats hard to forget, they sound is so smooth. My friends ask how i can do this and they ask me "what was that?" whenever a car with an exhaust passes by.

Ive herd a few BA XR6 turbos, i thought they were rb25s at first until i listened to how fast they were reving.

Hey. Good to hear that some of you guys have your ears finely tuned.

I am with gR33ddy about the wrx's but I do get confused when a VW beetle goes by.

I understand that our cars make different notes in the various rev ranges, but I can appreciate that there is a distinctive note at "cruise"? A beautifull sound according to my Wife.

Enjoy !

i can tell most cars apart, just from hearing them so much, ya get used and accustomed to the sound of each type of car, just like u can tune a guitar by ear after playing it for a few years

That's what I am talking about. I wish I had this gift but I don't. And I always had to tune my guitar using a tuner etc.

Maybe this is why my Wife would cringe when I played stuff as it was always out of tune. (and I did play very badly as well I know)

Enjoy !

aaah... I am yet to experience the soothing humble of an RB orchestra - idling in perfect harmony.......it must be the sound of bliss...

There must be a slight difference between exhaust systems though.

Eg- If Jonnies skyline is fitted with X Brand exhaust and idles at A then will Billies skyline fitted with Y brand exhaust idle at A, A flat , A sharp or even B or even G??

(keep in mind that they are both driving R33 gtst with stock internals, turbo and intercooler and running at about 12PSI!!)

Forget your NOS or octane boosters and spare brake pads, next time you guys have a track day or a cruise dont forget your guitar tuners!! :(

On a bit of a side note, my Wife has confessed that the best sound around our area is a Blue 300ZX with what looks like twin 4 inch pipes.

This one sounds mean (and goes to boot).

ps. I have been told that he works at Nowra Toyota. I'd like to think that this is true.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
