Hey guys,

question.......

I have had a K&N pod filter setup since I have had the car, and a friend mentioned that the standard air box seems to work better than the pod setup.

Is this true?

If so, I have just installed my standard air box with a new K&N air filter for it and it seems to be a bit more restrictive. Boost does not seem to come on as high as it used to and when "blipping" the engine to about 2k rpm the revs seem to drop alot lower (drop to just under 500rpm)than when I have the pod on, the revs then seem to creep back after a few secs. The pod never seem to lose revs. Obviously there is a noise difference aswell.

What do you guys think?

Anyone tested the pod vs the standard air box at all?

Could it be that the car was used to a certain air flow which has now changed?

Which is better?

As for testing the difference, I'm sure you'd find a few threads that cover this. Anyway, I'll answer your question.

The pod filter is probably going to be better for flow and total surface area.

The panel filter is better as it restricts heat from engine bay entering.

What you need to do is make a shielded area for your pod filter that seals (for the most part anyway) when the bonnet closes thus creating a sanction where hot air cannot enter. This gives you the best of both worlds.

People usually use aluminium as it is easily cut and shaped. Then use sticky heat shield tape to keep the heat out.

I actually relocated my filter down to where the stock intercooler goes. Seeing as though mine is no longer there. The only problems I have is filter changes are much more often. and when you drive through a puddle during rain it sometimes makes the car stall coz you suck up water. I made a quick release for it so I could return it to its natural position during rain and move it back again for more power. Kinda a pain in the arse but that's what I get for owning a sh1tbox

You obviously changed more than just the pod to lose 56kw.

I changed from a HKS Pod (unshielded) to the std airbox with K&N Panel filter. From memory the car felt a little more responsive downlow but it's been about 18mths now so I can't be so sure. I don't get any hassles from cops (after being hassled by a defect which is why I changed in the firstplace) and i'm guaranteed clean cold airflow because of the std air scoop. I also didn't like the "whoosh" of the HKS Pod.

My car is making damn good power (for my mods) so obviously the K&N Panel isn't holding my engine power back otherwise I would have swapped back by now.

Why spend $200+ on a Pod and then modify your engine bay just to fit it when a K&N Panel filter costs ~$100 and takes not even 1min to fit without any modifications at all ??

and BazR33 - i doubt you lost thast much power - I have seen dyno sheets to back-up that if a POD is not enclosed in a partition/CAI Box you will LOSE power - but using a POD in CAI and a High flow K&N panel in the stock air box you would't lose 53KW's

After reading the whole post, it seems that there is no real difference either way. For a gain of 10kw to set up a pod, and a box sounds like it is not really worth it. Although seems as tho the air box is a bit restrictive at high rpm.

Still doesn't answer the question of my revs dropping since I installed the standard air box though.

I think that I am going to revert back to my pod which was sectioned off, may look at adding a pipe from the lower front spoiler up to the pod for more cool air.

    • So, I've had my V36 for about a month now and have already copped an "excessive exhaust noise" notification from QLD TMR, reported by someone in my local area. It's a twin as per the original, and can have a bit of a throaty note to it when idling cold 😄 and if I do get up it a bit, it can be noisy, but it did pass a roadworthy inspection before sale, so.... ... but in the interest of being a good neighbour, I do want to quieten it down a bit. Is anyone here running a quiet aftermarket cat-back on their V36 or 370Z? And the big, bold question: does an aftermarket cat-back really make much of a performance difference on these cars?
    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
