re-threading a gear stick?

Ok I bought a new Nismo gearknob but it doesn't fit on my gear stick as it's a short shifter. I was wondering how can I get it to fit?

To attach the gear knob there's a removable screw piece which you screw onto the gear shifter and then you screw the gearknob onto this. The thread on the shifter is too small so it doesn't work properly. I thought of cutting the smaller thread off and rethread the shift but I'm not too fond of that idea. Anyone got any ideas of how to get the gearknob to fit? Is re-threading the best option? I have thought of using araldite but yeah, once it's on it's not coming off.
