Any skyline is part of a long line of family cars - they (for the most part) just happen to be very well equipped 'family' cars. I wouldn't be using the 'family car' theory as any part of a slanging match. It's a bit of a moot point anyway - it's an argument that doesn't go anywhere, or prove anything.

About all you can criticise the falcons for is weight (and build quality). 'Different' handling is a by-product of that weight - they certainly can get around the track fast enough, but won't have the 'feel' that many appreciate.

4L + big factory turbo will always = very impressive power. Luckily for the skyline boys, it seems that the xr6 can't get the power down to the ground particularly well (seems to be a common ford trait).

The biggest plus for the ford is that you can buy it easily at any ford dealership, brand spanking new, and with a worthwhile warranty (how often you need to use said warranty is another matter altogether...).

I wouldn't buy one, but I won't knock their abilities either.

I wasn't knocking thier abilities, just commenting on each cars strengthes/purposes.

If your requirment for a car is to carry the kids and wife with a caravan on a holiday, then a falcon/commodore would be a good choice

If your requirment for a car is to squirt around a race track, then a GTR/skyline would be a good choice.

ah boy another can of worms.

All I can compare is the difference I had in the 33GTST with say my father in laws 2002 SS.

With the Skyline there is a feeling of being integrated with the car. The SS on the other hand kind of feels like a powerful sled or something the way it travels around bends and such feels like its sliding all the time.

Heh if i go for a drive now in a newish com or falc i start feeling sick due to the way those cars handle inertia etc - too used to sporty suspension. Guess I was just wondering if XR6t was similar in those respects.

PS I use Firefox and it crashed for the first time yesterday. Reinstall did the jobbie.

Ha ha ha - not knocking the GTR's, but look at how many have had fatal engine damage recently from a fang on the race track.... (remember, I own a GTR....)

None down here in vic (yet) *touch wood*

I wonder how an XR8/XR6T would go running similar lap times as the GTR's down here, would it last ?

You can get the Falcons to handle better by spending $3-$4K. But thats a lot of money compared to the fact that you dont need to spend much on a Skyline.

yeah, for 2.5 k my mates cars handles much better than stock, but that still doesn't make up for the weight penalty that the ford carries.

and tell me why the xr6t's have the airbox on the opposite side to the turbo??? Just leads to more piping...bad design

anyway, guys at work have the xr6t on a lease and they've all had the following problems:

1) intercooler hoses blowing off

2) Engine stalling when stopping suddenly

3) Tailshaft problems

4) Coolant leaks

5) Brake shudder

6) Steering rack issues

There are about 10 guys in my team and 4 of them have xr6t's and every single one of them experienced the above mentioned problems.

There was a comparison done on one of the latest Serious Performance? vids from memory, of a 4 dour gtst vs xr6t.

With Ian Luff involved in the xr6t and some other driver in the skyline.

First off they took a tiptronic R34 auto, it got whopped big time, not to mention the handling was like a boat of a 4 door.

Then they took out a modified 4 door with suspension upgrade and it kept up with the xr6t and handled better. (but the xr6t was still stock as a rock)

Im sure some of you have seen the segment?

didnt you read the special features part of your owners manual, you paid for all those problems, you and 90 percent of the other people foolish enough to buy a new falcon

just keep booking it back into your delearship and it will all get fixed under waranty sooner or later

So an R34 4 door handles like a boat? How is it different from a 2 door suspension wise?

I have stock suspension. Check my signature.

I was under the impression that the 4 door has softer suspension for the occupants, more of a people mover and looking at the footage on the video, it must be, never seen a 2 door go over on two wheels and stuff.

Ill find out what dvd it was, i borrowed them off a mate.

Its worth a look for sure, if you really want to see the xr6t vs 4 door skyline part.

Someone here must have seen it and can also comment?

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
