I'm about to get my licence and am looking at 1984 NISSAN SKYLINE Ti 5 door, 2.4L 5sp manual.

What I am wondering, is how many K's these engines will do? The ad SAYS 256,721 and I will have to check that out (among a heap of other things of course) but how much is too much? I wasn't thinking of going over 200 000, but I know some engines will go a good 3 or 4 hundred thousand before a rebuild.

The other thing is, I expected parts to be reasonably priced for this car (being australian made and all). Is that correct or am I completely wrong?

Is there anything specific I should look at other than the usual stuff on this car?

Should I avoid it alltogether?

Anything else I need to know?

that's the redbook page for it.

Anyone know the sort of fuel efficiancy on this thing (I guess if I have to ask I shouldn't get a 6 - cylinder ey  ) And the wieght.

Thanks for you time guys

I'm not an expert on MR30's but my Hatchback has 183,000 km's and already has a failing rear oil seal (crankshaft) and some broken exhaust manifold studs (normal for L24E's) which need to be drilled out and replaced with aftermarket ones.

Oil leaks from the rear of the motor mean trouble and I have no idea of how much the stud replacement could be.

Another thing to check is if it's had its head gasket replaced at least once in its lifetime, because I hear they tend to go on high mile motors.

Don't expect great fuel efficiancy either, but being a manual it should be OK. My auto gets about 350 - 450 k's per tank.

Hope this helps.

Mine is running over 270,000ks, and it starts better than the R32! The 5-door (the hatchback?) is fully imported, but has all the bells and whistles you might want - IRS, 4 wheel disks (vented front), electric windows, 4-speaker stereo - not bad for 1983/4 family hack. But most of the parts are the same as the Oz sedan.

CHeers for the input guys. :D

Might go have a good look then. Don't like the sound of replacing studs though, I also suspect the owner of this car was on his P's.

Do you think I would be better off going for an '88 4 door? (that an R31?) I have about $4000 to spend, (from what I have seen these are going for about $2000 anyway) Including about 1000 in reserve after rego, insurance etc, just for any nasty surprises. Would one of them use much more fuel?

i retired my mr30 hatch at 401890km and it was a brilliant drive still surprized a few vp drivers, with good servicing the engine was built for 500,000km, its the other things that seemed to go though, the hatch has a problem with the rear window rusting at the back and it weights a sh&t load, the front guards rust around the doors as well... with a bit if time and little money these have the potental to live for a long time.....

They don't all need studs, but they are notorious for breaking off in the head, according to the mechanics I've spoken to.

The trunk lid dose get a bit of rust where the black side supports meet the painted rear edge at the two bottom corners of the glass, and I think they feel heavy because the struts don't stay at full strength for long after new, especially since mine have been regassed once and are failing again at only 184,000 k's.

The steering is another point I'd look into, if its nice and tight your probably in luck as it may have a new/reco steering box and ball joints etc, if it is vague and loose you may need a new steering box to restore it to its origional feel. Mine is pretty vague and worn, but by no means undriveable.

The MR30 Hatchback is a great car!. I got mine for $2500 on road, and it has all the usual stuff including 15in alloys and AC.

Cheap cars usually always need a little money spent on them to get up to scratch, but don't let that detur you from buying one.

my family had an r30 sedan way back in the day, and it ran like a dream and it was no slug either (although i was only a real little kid back then, lol) Back then my parents had a few big worked v8s and to this day they still praise the r30, saying how it was reliable and quick too. I know its not the same as what you are getting but just from what ive been told old aussie skylines are good reliable cars. On the k's thing, the number doesnt really matter. It all depends on how well or bad the car has been treated.

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
