Hi guys,

Took delivery of my R34 on Thurs and boy was I excited! My excitement was shortlived because it started developing a few issues namely:

Traction control could not be switched ON

SLIP warning light was ON the whole time

Tiptronic wasn't working

Auto went into limp mode (only had 3rd gear) intermittently

The check engine light would come on intermittently

Got the car plugged into a consult machine and had quite a few errors which could not be cleared. The dealer has given me a loan car for now and will be looked at on Tuesday after the easter break

In my spare time I've been doing a lot of research on this forum and have learnt about the shift solenoids breaking down which I do hope is not the case. I was told that these problems might have been triggered when the detailers pressure washed the engine bay causing sensors to malfunction. In the meantime all I have been doing is looking at pics of my R34 which I took on the first day. CAn't wait to get it back.

If anyone on here has had similar experiences, I wouldn't mind hearing from you. Will keep you all posted of the developments and hopefully get to meet up soon.

Cheers

Jon

P/S its a 99 model R34 GTT 4 door

You don't pressure wash skyline engine bays. (I don't mean you obviously) I wouldn't be surprised that it all starts working normally when the water has all evapourated from the nooks and crannys where they sprayed it. What a dickhead move.

Sounds like the solenoids to me, just need a few more details.

When in tiptronic mode does it display the gear still, but just doesn't change?

Also when the solenoids go, the check engine light doesn't come on, just the A/T light.

The check engine light is probably from the pressure cleaning, check the sensor attached to the traction control servo on the intake manifold, if the plug has moisture inside it will trigger the check engine light.

The very worst situation is you've got solenoids that have died in combination with the coil packs, which is very likely on the R34's

when in tiptronic mode, it just displays the gears like you're still in auto. Nothing happens. The check engine light comes on when I'm in neutral, reverse and also other gears apart from D. The car was still driving normally when the AT light was not on. I only had to turn the car off and on again and the AT light would disappear. Would it still run normal if my coilpacks were F^&*ed? I'm looking on the brightside, if the coilpacks and solenoid are faulty then they will definately have to replace them under warranty! On the other hand if that were the case then I Probably won't see my car for another couple of days.....its being trucked down to Gavin Woods down the coast so I guess I'm in good hands. The dealer has been good so far and wants to get this fixed asap. Shit happens :P

Yeah sounds like what happened to me, that only worked so many times, until the solenoids died 100%...then that little A/T light just wouldn't go!!!

Gavin sorted my one out so no doubt he's probably the best person to send it to, he was amazed that the solenoids actually tested OK out of the g'box...but turned out that was because the fault was heat related, at room temp they were OK.

My ones were replaced under warranty...happened within 5000kms of getting the car.

I think it was a good 6 week wait for parts, I know it was a pain driving in 3rd for what felt like forever! You'll find the parts probably have good availability from Nissan NZ.

Got the skyline back today. Alls good. nothing wrong with the coilpacks or shift solenoid. Apparently one fuse was in the incorrect place (stereo installers fault possibly) and there was a fault in the secondary throttle position switch circuit. I'm glad I got it back today and hopefully fingers crossed it'll be all good from here on!

Looks like you have the pearl white there. A 1999 R34 GTT Pearl White 4 door. Can't really go wrong there.

Good to hear it's back and working although "secondary throttle position switch circuit" sounds a bit weird. Ahh well, who cares. It works now. Enjoy.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
