i know this sounds like a stupid question but how do you adjust and check the timing on RB engines

like i know that the CAS is what adjusts it and stuff but how do i check the timing

i have a timing light that connects to the leads usually, and you all know that RBs dont have leads so how do i check the timing

and where do i connect the timiing light too ect.....

all help is appreciated

either:

a) at the back of the coil pack loom there is a white wire that you are supposed to use for timing. hook the timing light over it as if it were a spark plug lead.

B) take out coilpack number one and take off the the rubber bit at the bottom of the coilpack that goes over the spark plug, then put a lead from the spark plug to the bottom of the coilpack and hook your timing light up to that...

there is a black loop at the back of the cam cover that you use insted of the spark plug leads.

be careful reading the timing as there is sevral marks on the cover below the crankshaft wheel that line up with the timing belt mark.

if unsure just take it to a midas and they will ajust it to whatever you want for $15 bux

Not sure about skylines....

Normally u connect the CAS gun to a spark lead.

Aim the light @ the timing adjustgment screw (look around the timing belt bottom of engine area???)

and move the line to advance or unadvance timing...

in the first post i already know how to use and adjust timing just not with coil on plug configeration

and yes i know how to move the CAS to advance and retard the timong have already done that to get the car firing for the first time last night

but i dont know where the sweet spot is thats why i need to know how to!!!!!!!!!!

no you see that is my problem if you know where forster is you know this is a problem mechanics here are old and basically dont want to touch it unless they have like a greggery's workshop manual for one if you know what i mean (ie.. they wont touch the imports)

thats why this car has been built by me and a mate in the back yard form the ground up

as for the black loop where bouts on the cam cover is it exactley as i have seen no loop on the loom what so ever

and by cam cover are you talkin bout taper covers??? and is the loop supposed to be before or after the ignighter???

This is the safest method. But you don't necessarily need to remove the coil pack's boot to get it to work, in fact leaving the boot in place helps keep the plug lead in contact with the terminal.

OK SOO... I CUT THE END OFF A LEAD, PLUG ON CYLINDER ONE SPARKPLUG AND JAM THE OTHER END IN THE COIL PACK ????? IS THIS CORRECT

but you should need to cut the lead. i have never cu the leads. just used them as is... :(

You'll be right. have a play... cant really go wrong.. just dont get sparked by the coilpack :( and dont let it zap the motor... although there is no harm in doing so. im sure its not good for it :(

i have a rb20det in a silvia what is the procedure with the timing

ie....

i have the service manual it says to turn the idle screw on the computer all the way down then disconnect the AAC ( ? ) bla bla bla...

can someone post a step by step guide and disregard the "where to put the timing light" ill sort that out??

remind you that i have a rb20 and at the moment have done nothing at all to the timing what so ever just the way that we put the engine and put a new timing belt on!!!!!!!

ok here is my trouble

the manual says that BTDC timing is 15 degrees at 650 rpm thats with air con on

my truoble is that because i have fitted into silvia have removed air con to fit the thermo fans and custom manifold wastegate bla bla...

what do i do the car wont idle lower cuz there is no air con

so what is BTDC degrees at what RPM with out air con????

I've never set timing with A/C on. I think the only time you load an engine is in an auto (stuff it in 'D').

So in short, the answer to your question is 15 BTDC @ 650 rpm

Also, no need to cut the plug lead. Mabe just need to slip the "cap" end of the lead back a bit to expose the terminal better.

but i dont have an auto so do i set the timing just at the normal idle??

plus my tacho is not correct has not been converted for the rb so im blind at the moment just cant afford to get another thing wrong thats all!!

You don't have to have the engine idling exactly 650 - I doubt you could ever make it do that. I know that reading the handset on my Wolf 3D, the revs can vary by as much as 50 rpm aroung the idle point.

If the engine sounds like it's idling at somewhere near the right revs, then you can set the timing. As long as it's not racing or anything. Usually, changing the timing a bit can often change the idle revs anyway, so you'd end up chasing your tail - idling too fast, change timing, idling too slow, change timing...

    • Yeah agreed, you can't assume that shop are they only people who ever had to work on it. It was just a guess on the mods based on how things were done back then. You can check the Air Flow Meters by the part number on their tags, they are likely either Z32 or Nismo ones (both read about the same but the Z32 one is a little larger while nismo is stock size but supports the higher airflow like a Z32). And yes, all that would get you to 450hp / 340kw To tell what is happening with the turbos, you want a photo of the tag on the core, that will say what it was made out of  (they can retain the front and rear covers to make the plumbing easier)  
    • I'm selling my personal race car. 1992 BNR32 Skyline GT-R About eight years ago the engine developed the dreaded low oil pressure problem. I removed it and found the issue. However shortly after I moved half way across the country, moved my work shop, bought a house, got married, then moved my shop again to it's permanent location for the time being. in turn I do not have the time to race this car as it should be. In turn the engine I built for this car will end up in my street car and this car I hope finds a home with someone who can use it to it's full potential. The roll bar was built by Jason Noren Fabricaiton in Pomona California to SCCA and NASA Specs. The car used to compete in redline time attack and global time attack enthusiast class. It also has a fire suppression system.  The car is with me at my workshop in Kyle Texas, USA. Shipping it is no problem, I can personally deliver the car to the port of either Houston or Los Angeles. Any other port depending on where it is may require transport but we can always work that out.   The chassis itself is rust free, rear quarters and under fenders are free of any rust so it's a very solid foundation for anyone who wishes to move forward with it.     • So...to my (and my mechanics doing the swap) surprise...the oil pan from NEO engine does not fit 100% and needs to by modified like this: It is not a huge problem but in the future i want a "proper" oil pan. So question is...what different oil pan can i get to fit without any problems and modification? Thanks!
