Personally I would much rather have the superior performance of a low mount

What is the superior performance? Is it just centre of gravity as you mentioned earlier? Please elaborate on why low mount is superior.

Personally I perfer high mount because most low mounts act like ovens to the turbo. Look at most low mount setups and the compressor housing is very very close to the ex manifold making it difficult to protect from heat using even the best insulation. This is very much overcome in the high mount manifolds I have designed and many available made by others. You can argue that heat travels upwards, but really it needs matter (ie air) to travel through and with low mounts heat stays to close to the compressor housing. I have transitioned from low --> high mount and I high mount ran cooler. The advantage also is that you can guide the heat from the exhaust manifold away from the compressor and also insulate your manifold to keep heat within the manifold (which you can also do with low mount ofcourse). I see that its all about heat bt the two setups. Chances are differences are minimal and so it comes down to personal preference. Only advantage as sydney kid said before is centre of gravity.

Cheers

We tried a GT30 on the R34GTT mounted to the standard  manifold using an adaptor.  It fitted in easily.  If I remember rightly, Steve on here also had the same on an R33GTST making 300+rwkw.  The HPI R34GTT had a GT3040 low mounted on a Croydon's custom exhaust manifold, around 310 rwkw if I recall correctly.

Hi Sydney Kid,

Just interested in how the r34 was to drive with the GT30 - did it lose responce in the important 5th gear 100km/hr zone?

How tidy was the install? Did all the standard heat shields fit ok?

Cheers!

It was an OK install, the exhaust manifold heat shielding fitted OK, with a little mods. You could barely tell that it wasn't standard, the dump was a bit obvious.

It was not my kind of turbo installation, too laggy, nothing--nothing---nothing--then hang on, throttle response made driving fast very tricky, the handling was compromised by the lack of throttle control. The useable power band was too small as well. It had 40 rwkw more but it is was slower in most applications.

It lasted a month and I ditched it, the GCG ball bearing hi flow was a much better all round package. That's for my taste and driving requirements, some other people loved the big turbo feel.

Good to know SK,

I'm getting to the stage where I'm looking at a better turbo than standard - just don't want to go too small as I'm also looking at doing an rb30 bottom end......

I very much like the idea of being able to bolt the GCG straight on and it looks the same.

From what I've heard I might be happy enough with a GCG, tomei pon cams and a good tune.

Cheers

thanks elu!

low-mount is stealth, generally thats a good reason... you have your gate sticking up in the air for all too see...

For me that wouldnt work. may aswell high mount it as you know whats lurking there.

that personal opinion though :P
