Ban Turbo Cars From P Platers? Just wanna know where this stands...

lol Roy, that's so true- even if it is a "joke" :rant: Anyway, yeah, I'm male... all the chicks are in Software Eng/Computer Systems/Civil!!! And by all, I mean all 10 of them :| lol. What do you need to know about me anyway - all that matters in this thread is each persons opinion on the issue :( with the odd flame war and personal attack, as some people seem to find necessary :)

At the end of the day there are millions of ppl out their with licence, vastly different driving abilities, car performance/safety, levels of maturity and physical ability to drive a car (eyesight, level of attention when driving etc)

You have to legislate for the lowest common denominator, so we will always be up against it to bring in a fair and safe system of licecning.

I didn't flag the engineering thing as a sign of maturity... engineers love to blow stuff up, right? Well, I know I do :P

Anyway, yes - I flagged it as a sign of "grey matter" - which has nothing to do with maturity... but brains... I'm not bragging, but - I have to at least have a bit of grey matter to be doing it, right? This is probably the most simplistic and best comment yet - yes, we have to legislate for the lowest common denominator... but why do it *after* they have their licence? Why not ALSO say, "ok, you must be *this good* to get your licence"?

Stop the problem before it can occur (before you can get a licence) as well as limiting its occurrance during licensing? I think 6 months or so after this new law comes in - other changes should come in in regard to licensing.

I am on my Green P's, i'm 26 years old, yet i've been riding motorcycles since 1996, so don't say all P-Platers lack experience!, i just never had the need for a car until recently, i've never got a speeding ticket, and i never speed on the road, as i saw a car run a red light and kill my friend on her bike infront of me!, even before that i still was extra careful and didn't speed, but let me tell you something, i've been knocked off my bike 3 times in my life, none of which were my fault, but each time it was a FULLY LICENSED DRIVER that did it, once was a car running a red light, once was a soccer mum in a 4WD reversing into me and a car rear ending me at a red light... whilst i agree, all younger drivers should by all means do extra courses, what makes you think fully licensed drivers shouldn't as well? i have done countless advanced riding courses, and also advanced driving courses, and i still think i could do alot more, and eventually will!.

Don't be so judgemental with EVERY P-Plater, some might surprise you.

has anyone actually seen the full details of this new law? i tried looking on rta site with no luck maybe im looking in the wrong places. if anyone has links to the details of the new law i would be very interested to seem them. what kind of fines and punishments will be in place if you are caught driving a turbo car??

Everyone should go get a copy of the Daily Telegraph today... it has answers to many of the questions floating around; but in a nutshell -

1) Rules only apply to those who get their Ps on or after July 11 2005

2) Those caught breaking this law will get $375+ fine and 4 demerit points

3) Those who lose their license will be subject to the same rules upon reinstatement

4) Those who currently own the vehicles or plan to buy vehicles have no worries so long as you don't lose your license.

Grab a copy and read - the RTA site is still empty on this matter.

To many it will be a big sigh or relief ~

Fair enough... You're in a very VERY small minority my friend, and as I said before, you got caught up with the majority. Bummer.

Also, just because you've been riding a bike for 10 years, doesn't mean you know how to handle a 400kw GTR on the roads.... right? But I see where you're coming from, and I agree, but you'd fall into maybe 0.05% of the P-plater population.

One interesting observation from the NRMA though that I haven't read anywhere: Government’s decision to restrict new P-plate licence-holders would only apply to NSW license holders...Even if ACT motorists are driving in NSW they are not affected by the new laws.

I think it does not apply to you since your incident date was before the law was passed (July 11)... however, if it is a condition that you have to resit the Ps tests in order to regain your license, it could be a different story.

How long after the 11th are you to get the new license?

Better to ask the RTA for confirmation on that one. Good Luck~

I think I would need to defer to our judge south of the border aka. Troy/Roy.

I seem to think that the prevailing opinion is that 'you drive on our roads, you comply to our standards'.

If this were not the case, I'd have my car registered in QLD and be immune from local police inspection.

But i can see the merit of both arguments. And tend to think the rule is a joke...

But your post seems to be missing the point. So what you can punt a car hard, brake well etc etc. But for day to day driving you can still be a sh1thouse driver, unable to reverse park quickly, ie not holding up traffic. May still travel too close to cars in front of you, may not read traffic flow properly meaning you are always jumping in and out of lanes increasing the liklihood of accidents etc etc

Years of racing experience mean d1ck when driving on the street, they are completely different things.  Thats just the experience side of things, which can see you having a small prang, perhaps make a poor decision in a split second emergency. Odds are you wont kill yourself, you werent doing anything reckless etc, its just an experience thing.

So then you have the ppl that want a performance car. They want a performance car most likeyl cause they like going fast:) Then you have an added dimension you have to be concerned about. In this instance you just have to hope the driver has a level of maturity and understanding of what 1500kgs of speeding metal means when you have to change lanes, brake, steps sideways

Here is the big thing, the average Mum/dad Commodore/Falcon has enough grunt to do MASSIVE damage, so whats the big deal?

You say that I miy still be a crap reverse parker or holdin up the traffic...I think you may have missed the point. Having a turbo car is not goin to make me anyworse at those tasks is it? Or anybetter for that matter...that is someting which will need practice. It will not be affected by the choice of my car..

LOL...thats my point. And the fact that a 5k VN Commodore will right of a keen punter as quick as an SR20DET S13...i dont see how this will do much about road safety.

Driving is more a mental activity then physical. I bet most small accidents are the result of poor concentration. And most big accidents are the result of a complete lack of understanding / maturity with the manner in which they drive a car. How you police this aspect is beyond everyone.

Perhaps if we all got kicked out of home at 14, started out first jobs at 14, got laid at 14, been broke and desolate a few times by 16, and had a near death experience on the piss at 16, then we may all be that little bit more worldly / mature when we get our licences:)

There is no answer to this drama, but limiting the cars ppl can drive when they are at the age they may give a car a punt is the most obvious and easy palce to start. I doubt its the best answer, but ?!?!?!

    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
    • It is the stock air box with the panel filter. Everything else is stock except the exhaust at this point, as I also went back to the cleaned 270cc injectors. I will check the RPM when the IACV is unplugged and report back.
    • As MBS suggested if this is happening when the engine is cold you're going to want to remove the intake air regulator and verify resistance + that the shutter is physically opening and closing. At -20C should be fully open, 20C half open, over 60C fully closed. At 20C should be 70-80 ohms. For AAC valve testing using a Consult cable see if you can raise and lower the idle by commanding more or less AAC duty cycle. Hopefully it's pretty linear as well, shouldn't be like 30% AAC valve is barely idling and 40% is 1500 rpm.
