Just took my car to a suspension specialist in Perth today to get some suspension tuning done (basically to check over the system and soften the shocks). I also asked about a vibration I get through the steering wheel at around 100kmh.

Was told it was balancing of the wheels but due to the mags on the car it was not possible to balance them and ensure it gets rid of the vibration. The options they gave me were to buy a stock set of rims or an a/m set that are installed properly.

As the car has 17" rims and a new set of tyres (due to it being just complied) am hesitant to do this. its not that I particularly like the rims just don't want to fork out the money for a new set of 17" rims just yet.

Does anyone have any other suggestions that I could try to get rid of the problem?

Cheers, Al

Red Sky II,

I don't know who told you this, but it sounds like crap to me. All a balancing involves is placing weight on the rims to counter any uneven weight distribution. Yes some aftermarket mags do require alot of weight to balance them but I haven't seen one that couldn't be done.

Have you had the alignment checked, due to the amount of adjustability in the car it is worth checking that the settings are right, or you could wear through your tyres very quickly.

I know some good people to do alignment/balancing in the Cannington area if your interested, just PM me.

Never take one persons opinion, can often be that they are trying to avoid any blame if your not happy.

See'ya :burnout:

basicly centres the wheel to the hub as wheel nuts cant do this alone. Bob Jane sells them. some mag wheels require stick on wheel weights so balanceing shouldnt be a problem.

Funny you say that as that is what they told me to ensure should I get new wheels but not with the ones I have now. If Bob Jane sells them then I might take it down to them and ask about it.

They told me they could put on the balance weights but they wouldn't guarantee that it would work so they didn't want to do it.

Anyone else out there with fairly deep rims - what have you done?

Al

Just an update on the wheel balancing issue. I took the car today to Bob Jane T-Marts in Balcatta who after putting the fear of god into me (with comments like this is going to be tough), they fixed the problems.

Stick on wheel weights were put on the inside of the rims so can't be seen from the outside and they wheels already had the wheel centre bore location rings fitted with no play.

Whilst I was there also got all four wheels aligned. Lucky I did as they were totally out of whack - guess that's something that doesn't get done when cars are complied. With alignment I had to get one for a 4WS system given HICAS which is more expensive that ordinary alignments.

Car feels much better now although there is still some "run out" in the front wheels but I am told the only way to fix that was to replace the wheels = expensive given 17" x 7.5" fronts and 17" x 8" rears.

Thanks for the advice given by you guys.

Cheers,

Al

Hi Red sky

Thanks for the update I am pleased all went well,

its not quite true that the only way to fix run out is by replacing the wheels,

it is possible to have the rims re rolled this is much cheaper than replacing the wheels (about $30 a Rim depending where you go)

(bob jane dont do this normaly as they would rather sell wheels and would have to send the rims away elsewhere )

sometimes they might need to heat the rim which would then require a repaint (more $) but if you dont have a problem now I wouldn't bother.

its good to here that who ever fitted the wheels did it pro job using centre bore location rings. not often would you get that without asking for it.

Could you please explain what is meant by "run out" as the guy tried to explain it to me but didnt do a good job as I couldn't figure out what he was saying?

Cheers, Al

Red Sky II,

No Worries

Run Out is likened to buckled

The rim can be out up and down or side to side

    • Did you panel beat the dents or have you tried to repair this only using filler?  Is your sanding block soft/flexible and is following the shape of the panel rather then just knocking down the high points?
    • I haven't knocked them down yet. I think I made the repair more complex than it should have been. I had rock chips combined with waviness and dents and I tackled it all in one because it was near each other and just end up wasting a bunch of bog lol. I'll knock down those areas and see how I go. And yep what you are saying at the end is correct. I think I might be sanding the top of a steep hill then my sanding block falls into the dent and gets rid of the guidecoat if that makes sense. Though shouldnt unless I'm covering too big of an area with not a long enough block. I'll try something new and provide some updates. Getting there though! Thanks as always.
    • Yeah makes sense, hard to comment on your situation without seeing what your doing. I was talking generally before, I would not be looking to randomly create low spots with a hammer to then have to fill them.  It's hard without seeing what your doing, it sounds like you are using the guide coat to identify low spots, as you're saying the panel is still wavy. I don't see how you're not ending up with patches of guide coat remaining in a wavy panel? Once the high spots are knocked down to the correct level, surely to have a wavy panel you need low spots. And those low spots would have guide coat still in them?
    • So I'll put filler past the repair area a bit to make sure I don't miss anything. Then I'll block it until it's almost level, put the guidecoat, then keep blocking until it's gone. Then it's still wavy.  In regards to hitting the panel, I saw this video might give more context - Skip to 0:47 he knocks it down. But yeah I'm sanding until the guidecoat is gone then checking because otherwise my filler is still well above the bodyline. Unless what you're saying is I should put guidecoat around it early, surrounding the filler then stip once it's gone?
    • I refreshed the OEM injectors with the kit and connected it up. It now ideals okay even with the IACV removed. Driving still has the same cutoff issue like the 550cc injectors so the issue is somewhere else. I bought FPG's Fuel Pump Hanger. I will be installing it next, but it is not as straightforward as I thought it was with my limited wiring knowledge and no instruction on the specific model I purchased (FPG-089). I also got the incorrect billet clamp as I could not find info on the OEM sizing.
