hi,

sorry if i am posting at the wrong place but i tried searching for the the correct topic but cant seem to find it (maybe using the wrong keywords).

i just bought a 1991 r32 gts, it has a set of D2 coilovers which are way too hard for my liking. The springs also seem short as i can't seem to wind it up to increase ride height.

my question is what are the best spring rates for normal street use and secondly; are there different heights for coilover springs?

Do mind doing these for me.

l expext them to be pretty hard, my butt can vouch for it.

Front Coil ID: 70mm

Wire Dia: 12mm

# of Coils: 8.5

can you let me know kg/mm please mate...and i'll send you pics of the rear when i get them off the car,or any one eles can do it for me plssssss

Wire OD= 13mm

# of coils= 8.125 turns

Rear:

Coil OD= 90mm top and bottom

Wire OD= 13mm

# of coils= 9 turns

What i want to know is the best place, preferably in Eastern Melbourne suburbs, to have this looked at and hopefully get recommendations and possibly alternate springs made up.

ID Both: 1.24100" (in) = 31.5214 MM

OD of Wire: .194" (in) = 4.9276 MM

# of coils: 31.3 turns

230 lbs/inch (4.1 kg/mm)

Rear:

Coil OD= 90mm top and bottom

Wire OD= 13mm

# of coils= 9 turns

200 lbs/inch (3.6 kg/mm)

The standard ones, 165 lbs/inch (3kg/mm), Nissan didn't get it that wrong. If upgrading then nothing over 330 lbs /inch (6 kg/mm) in the front and 225 lbs/inch (4 kg/mm) in the rear.

If that gives too much roll for your liking then upgrade the swaybars, 27 mm front and 24 mm rear.

are there different heights for coilover springs?

Yes, heaps, all you need to know is the ID, the rate and and the current free height. Then order accordingly.

these are off a set of Koni coilovers...

# of Coils = 6.5 turns

300 lbs /inch (5.5 kg/mm)

Coil ID = 64mm

Wire OD = 10 mm

# of Coils = 7.1 turns

Hi SK could you please calculate some spring rates for me.

FRONT:

Coil ID = 99 top / 68 bottom (mm)

Wire OD = 12.7 mm

# of Coils = 7.5 turns

275 lbs /inch (4.9 kg/mm)

REAR:

Coil ID = 88.5 top / 77.5 bottom (mm)

Wire OD = 12 mm

# of Coils = 11 turns

140 lbs /inch (2.5 kg/mm)

With 11 turns it's most likely a progressive spring, give me the coil spacing and I can work out the high rate as well (140 is the low rate).

Hey Gary can you please work your magic formula over these,

Rear

OD:- 92mm

Coils :- 8.2 turns

Springs Diameter :- 12.9mm

220 lbs /inch (3.9 kg/mm)

Front

OD :- 95mm

Coils :- 10.1 turns

Spring diameter :- 14.3mm

215 lbs /inch (3.8 kg/mm)

and the rear are

Coil ID = 59 mm

Wire OD = 12 mm

# of Coils = 12 turns

Can you help calculate my spring rates please. HKS coilovers for S13. Hypermax D. I'm guessing pretty stiff :)

Not sure what to measure when it comes to the Coil OD's as I have progressive springs. So attached pic for your assistance.

Fronts:

Coil OD lowest coil 82mm/very top coil 82mm. Widest part of OD is the middle of the top 5 coils and that measures 95mm. 5 coils at top close sprung.

Wire OD = 11mm

# of coils = 10.5

Spring Rate =

Low rate 115 lbs /inch (2.0 kg/mm)

High rate 285 lbs /inch (5.1 kg/mm)

Rears:

Coil OD lowest coil 87mm/very top coil 87mm. Widest part of OD is the middle of the top 5 coils and that measures 95mm. 5 coils at top close sprung

Wire OD = 11mm

# of coils = 10.125

Spring Rate =

Low rate 100 lbs /inch (1.8 kg/mm)

High rate 260 lbs /inch (4.6 kg/mm)

With those low low rates it would always be running around on the high spring rates, the extra coils are just there to soak up space (keep the coils trapped at full droop).

    • Thank you GTSBoy and MBS206 I have done the compression test with the motor out of the vehicle, reason for the test was to see if I needed to remove the head and do rings etc while its out. I'm in the process of respraying the vehicle and tidying up a few things. Story behind it all is I've just purchased the skyline and it was running when I got it, never drove it on the street though as I wanted to pull it down and do it all up again before registering it. the gentleman I purchased it from told me the motor has a forged bottom end and has a decent tune through it but I was going to pull the sump off anyway to see if it is a forged bottom end. that's why I thought id do a compression test beforehand. 
    • Man, I'm kind of amazed that the price of the turbo has not changed in 7 years. Everything else is inflating beyond reason, but not this? Good on Tao / hypergear I guess? Anyways, good luck with the sale!
    • I'm selling my brand new, in the box, never used Hypergear ATR45 - and I had some additions I paid for a few yrs back when I purchased it. Never ended up having the rest of the money to add all the mods at once, so I just ended up slowly selling each part. I originally had it internally gated, with the dump pipe, however I found it was incompatible with what I was going to use it for, so I contacted (I think Ken) from Hypergear, and he and I messaged back and forth & he got me to ship the turbo back, where they modified it & made it externally gated, and gave me the 5 bolt dump pipe attachment for custom welding. (Photos below) This turbo like I said has never touched the inside of an engine bay, it's completely brand new, never used, been sitting in the same box it arrived in, covered in plastic & all. Below are the photos of it: And while the guys at Hypergear were making it in-shop, they sent me some photos of the process: I'm looking at selling this just because I'm in need of the money right now, and don't have plans on modifying the 34 anytime soon - and from reviews & peformance sheets, this turbo had amazing results back when I was researching. The turbo was purchased in 2018 for $1.9k, with the mods I got added on. Looking at the website now, for the same turbo they sell (ATR45SAT), with the current addons it adds up to $1830 for the turbo Current addons included: - Bolted dump adaptor - Ball bearing CHRA - Braided oil feeding line So I'm looking to possibly sell it for around $1800, with shipping included in that 1.8k, It cost me around $120 to ship - so yeah thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone was interested in purchasing.
