Hey guys/girls,

Just a quick question - sometimes when coming out of a corner hard in first gear, the LSD won't lock up and will only spin one wheel. However, as soon as I put it into second gear, both wheels start spinning and sideways it goes.

It's weird though, sometimes it does lock up fine, but most of the time it won't, mainly noticable in the wet...

Is there any reason for this? Is that the way stock GTS-T diffs are built, or? Will change the diff oil help this? Or is the LSD simply getting worn out? I find it weird that it always works perfect in second gear, leading me to think they are designed like this? Everytime i've done a burnout at the drags, both wheels lock up fine...

Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Tommo.

has it always done this? or only just started happening

I'd say your stocko viscous lsd is probably just worn out. Try doing donuts in 1st gear, and see if you can keep the end out. Stock viscous in good nick should be able to keep it going, a worn one will crap out and single spin.

I've never really been giving it much before, especially around corners!! However now i've learnt to drive RWD beyond the limit, I've been testing things out, thats when I noticed it won't be locking up in first.

Merlin, that's gotta be the best excuse for doing heli's i've ever seen in my life :D I'll try doing a few quiet ones this weekend and see what happens. I'll defintely look at changing my diff oil anyway, as far as I know it's never been done before (since i've owned it, anyway)

I'd say your best bet would be to change your diff oil. Motul pa 90 is quite good for diffs, and at 20$ for a tin, you can't go wrong. it'll save you so much stress thinking about whether your diff is warn out etc.

It is very easy to change as well.

When I got my car and changed the oil, the previous owner must have never changed it, because it was black and so thick it was almost solid. Required a good two changes before the oil was clear. Lets just say that afterwards, I was smiling. :D

oh hell yeah! we have our own designated "diff testing area" we use to test diffs to see if they are worn or need reshimming when testing a car for drift-worthiness... if you can't do proper donuts, your diff isn't locking well enough!!

Sweet, i'll head up to Unique and buy some on Friday... I want to get my gearbox oil done at the same time, sounds like a good excuse to me :):):)

Gotta love how the diff is on the way out with only a claimed 56,000kms.. damn jap cars and their false odometer readings :D

Hey mate,

I ended using the relavant redline oils for my diff and gearbox.

Gearbox is BEAUTIFUL, makes it very very nice to drive with :D I'd recommend it to anyone, even if your gearbox feels fine :)

Diff is also much better, but not as noticable as the gearbox.

Either way, for a couple of hundred bucks, it's a pretty cool upgrade :):):)

Cheers,

Tommo.

Defintely made it better, if i'm not turning too much in first it'll defintely hook up.

But if I come out of a corner in first at 45 degrees to the road, it'll generally spin one wheel until I go into second gear.

I haven't tried helis yet.

Hey Guys

I have changed the oil in my diff as well to the redline stuff a while ago and the single thing in first still happens. I think its time fir a reco.

My diff is very similar however it will only light up the rear right, extremely noticeble in the wet, if I flog it around a right hand corner the ass kicks out and the right goes nuts. If I do it around a left hand corner then the rear right still lights up but its sketchy but doesnt really let go. In the wet even small overtaking/turning makes it light up.

Damn pos stock LSDs.

This is in a HR31 as well. Time for a mechanical LSD I think.

I worked out the injector settings in the PowerFC were not correct for nismo 555s, set those to 66% +10ms and added a little air at closed throttle, set the timing (approximately, because it has some weird non 15o cells around idle) and now she starts and idles properly. • Went to a drift practice day at a local circuit (held on the reserve parking area behind the grandstand) for the first time in about 15 years. Some kei cars were drifting as well, a not so surprising Suzuki Carry truck, and two 1st gen Daihatsu Copens that were converted to rear wheel drive(!) using Daihatsu Boon X4 transfer case, prop shaft and rear diff, obviously omitting the front driveshafts. They looked really fun to slide. I heard that they cost "about half" as much as a Nissan Silvia etc to run.  On the track 'Tech M' a local BMW tuning garage had a customer track day. Mainly recent models but there was one E36 which looked ancient among all the current models. It was cool watching the drifting and then turning around and seeing random people thrashing their M3/4s  central-circuit-drift-practice-2025-05-18-long-yt.mp4
