This actually slightly interests me. How serious are you guys? I assume since Brisby is on the team that we're not too serious?

I used to race BMX, and ride everyday before I got my license. I will chat to you guys more about it, as i'm keen to build some fitness back up. How much time do I have?

This ain't bunny hops and wheelies mate :)

You have time to establish some endurance and become used to sitting on a bike for hours. Last one I did I hadn't ridden for 10 weeks but still did 8 hours. I'd suggest 10 hours a good target with the varied levels of preparation in this group. The key to this ride, for each of you in its own way, will be ensuring everyone who starts, short of injury or illness, comes in together. The stronger riders have to back it off a bit, and enjoy a more social speed for them that doesn't destroy the others too fast. The riders with less prep must let the others know if they are struggling and accept some direction on when to eat and drink and what to do to maintain comfort.

Hydration: every opportunity you think of. At least every 15 min. Use very little of the wonder drinks, they are marketing crap. I just used water and use rehydrate after the event, usually 2 litres as a start and just drink at a comfortable rate. Afterwards is just as important as before. Drink at least one bottle of water before mounting up to go. Drink a couple of litres through the evening before. I used to have a really bad nights sleep before BIG races if I was tapering. Too much energy, lots of water in the system and I'd feel a little ordinary at the start, and usually would place high or win. Take the start easy. Lots will take off like a shot but ignore them, there are a few hours left to go so just roll along and wait at least 1/2 -3/4 hour before cranking it up for some fun.

Food: powerbars and stuff are ok, but so are snakes and other jellies and they aren't as messy. Repackage them in a soft food bag and ditch their original packet. Try to eat a good roll or sandwich at halfway for the ferry ride. Lots of salad on the roll and a little meat (unless that's not cool for you ok). Take the opportunity for a dump as well as the constant motion can get things moving and you can do without them moving out on the highway.

Comfort: stand up and pedal at least every 15mins or more often if you start to feel uncomfortable in the legs or seat. Move the hands around on the bars. Occasionaly have a bit of a sprint. Not too energetic, but just to have a little push and stretch some tendons. Eventually everyone starts to know the signs of an impending sprint, like an obvious object on the side of the road and one of you will get a bit twitchy. Contest, but just a bit, and just for a little fun. No sheep stations.

Yeah Chris - go team!

If I can do it - anyone can :P

Can we count you as in? The event is on Oct 30, so plenty of time to train. I want to get the entries in soon though.

Derka derka, bakalah my brother...other words up yours. :P

Im jogging 4kms x 4 mornings per week. This Saturday im riding up to Gosford up the old Prices Highway. I am going to have abs of steel, quads of titanium, calves of some other hard object...but still be typically full of sh1t.

But im taking the actual fitness side of it serious...the ride will just be awesome fun/challenge

James and others - a ride tomorrow?

GTRGeoff - I have a training schedule from their website which I have adjusted roughly in accordance with what I know and have made a reasonable base to build from. From the MTB days, I usually drink every 5 - 7 mins minimum but 15 mins I would imagine is an OK minimum for road, due to the more consistent effort required.

If anyone wants a copy of the site one as a guide, let me know as it is about building endurance as Geoff is saying (hell Geoff and I could be the same person!)

Chris, would be great to have you on board. Thought it was the 16th James?

What are we doing about entries as I am sure it is oversubsribed and we dont want to miss the boat, literally!

You guys will need to pay me a visit one Saturday and we can ride up the road to the 1000 steps at the base of Mt. Dandenong. It's an awesome fitness test. And a real challenge. Plus there are always hot women walking up and down there on the weekend.

A lot of footy teams go up there. We'll have to organise it.

Sounds good mate. That might be the place Snowy showed my up there. Some killer hills. Chris the beach always has hot women though too! B)

So are you in for a team entry?

Details for Melbourne Marathon are up:

http://www.melbournemarathon.com.au/

I'll be doing this - half-only of course - as some some kind of foolhardy warmup for the bike ride. Anyone else stupidly keen?

Course is from Blackrock to Arts Centre - so pretty flat.

Sounds good Brisby. Damn why can't we change subject titles so Chris can see this thread!

So who wants to organise the entry, do you want to take charge James as you started the thread? Don't want to steal your thunder. I can EFT you the money assuming we have enough for a team entry.

Yep - I'll go through the BV booklet at home and check it all good.

Will find out what best way to do payments.

The officia Team Wang Cycle team is:

Saff

Bris

Scotland

Golgo

Coach is The six-million dollar Geoff

We expect cheering from the rest of you at some vantage point along the way. Otherwise, I'll summon just enough energy after the ride to kick each and everyone of you in the balls.

Will get Ash to arrange a cruise to co-incide :P

Top plan ;)

It finishes in Docklands - so I suggest anyone meeting us at the 'cheer point' come and have an ale afterwards too.

Mind you, I think the only thing I'll be downing after this will be painkillers. Considering I have the Marathon 2-weeks prior... argh :P

Tonight will officially be my last few beers until after the event, its scary how had the next days cardio is even after only 4 or 5 beers?!?!?!

With any luck ill love my new found fitness and will give up the grog, or at least moderate it a little better

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
