so the HKS GTR only has the pods to make them sounds good?

and those 9s GTRs also, no performance increase from pods?

They probably found it easier to fit their upgraded turbo kits with pods instead of the airbox + the pods look and sound cool

A car is designed so that there is a low pressure area behind the radiator (the engine bay). This allows the great majority of the air to pass through the radiator and cool the coolant. In the process this air heats up. This is the air that is sucked in by the pods.

This is also why stock air box's have their snorkle fitted up tightly behind the front head light. If they were to just sit it there it would be of no use as the air from the radiator will contaminate it.

Im not saying your wrong but thinking about it I doubt that the air will get all that much kinetic energy transfered to it to keep the same momentum as the car (thus the pod) to allow a majority of it to be sucked in my the pod.

Sure the turbo will create a great amount of suction, but by the time it effects the area where the heated air that cooled down the rad is most of that air should be on its way out of the engine bay or be hit against the engine and bounce elsewhere, some to the pod and most of it elsewhere in the bay...

Eitherway I still am a air box fan, and believe even with a pod mostly cold air will be sucked in.

At the end of the day there is an intercooler to cool the intake air, and if it is a 30+ degree say its just stupid to use drive any performance car (especially turbo) at its full potential, but I think the pod sucking in hot air, however little amount of air that is, is insignificant on a effectivley intercooled intake system...

There is no cold air in an engine bay, its damn scorching under there, anyhow i used to have my pod unshielded right up kissing the passenger headlight and it was terrible, performance was always up and down, so moved it into the bumper bar, and power is now much more reliable, at night its spectacular, i have a just jap front mount so cant use standard air box

So where do you think the hot air from the radiator goes? The air is sucked out the bottom after swirling all through the engine bay. Admittedly there is a small amount of air coming around the headlight, and a clever guy will fit a snorkel into the front bar to use a spare hole to force some cold air in but without a really well constructed chamber there wil be heaps of hot air sucked in. Calculate 2.5L running at 6000rpm + 14psi of forced induction (so double the previous number) and then calculate the number of engine bays at around 300L that is sucking through each minute. Start to get the idea?

It's not uncommon for ambient temps in the street car engine bay to get to over 70degC and when an exhaust is glowing dull red that is about 700degC.

On my track 25t I measured post turbo temps of over 75deg off an enclosed pod with a highflow running 14psi and 220rwkw. After the Hybrid Monster 800hp FMIC it had dropped to 28 deg on a 27deg day. Imagine if it had been sucking 70deg air in.

On the GTR33 the airbox has an extra inlet through the side of the bay inside the guard so it will run extra power, but I'm currently working on a simple mod for the GTS25t airbox to take in extra air through the top with a snorkel to draw what cool air can be had.

i used to run my pod down in the front bar, never had any issues, cept the pod got dirty quicker

certainly never had any issues with airflow at speed (that i noticed anyway)

now have pod back in engine bay, sealed off nicely

i believe the sucky sucky noises give me an extra 20rwkw (in my mind)

I'II show u mine geoff in in a few days if I get the chance. I have mocked up a new snorkel to replace the stock one...the inlet will be much wider, nearly to the radiator cap. in addition the snorkle itself will be bigger to add some volume to the intake side. I was gonna make a new lid, but decided this was enough at this stage to keep it looking stock. But I new lid would be good also.

Compared to the air pressure on the nose of the car yes... the whole engine bay has a lower pressure.

I totally agree theres a significantly lower pressure compared to the nose of the car. Hence my theory on its momentum. My tired thoughts have been misconstrued. So never mind about me.

Totally agree, running a good source of cold air will help, but as youve mentioned a good FMIC as I also mentioned will make more of a difference in the end.

Nah, you had some good thoughts there. They just needed to be followed through a bit more and the links would have made you see what happens so well done on that. Certainly not about handing anyone ass or any other piece of anatomy.

A good sized FMIC will make a difference but needs help. I remember my stock side mount on 12psi was seeing over 60degC on a 29deg day but I could get that down to 34 with the IC water spray on. As they say: "you can't polish a turd". :)

Like I said, 130am ramblings......ne hoo, Im thinking about getting some temp senders under the bonnet when my cars done and on the track, see whats happening under there, cous If I can fit the R32 airbox like I had perviously in my R31 with the new turbo and pipe work then I will, if not I have to settle for a pod :O

I ran more power up today and had an issue with the stock rubber intake hose from the airbox to the turbo. Essnetially under hi load the rubber would collapse...obviously the air box was restricting this too much.

I replaced the box with a pod for the run which sorted the issue.

So essentially what I deduced was the stock air box and snorkel simply couldn't supply enough air over 1bar or around 250rwkw. This is with a trust hi-flow pannel filter.

Pod filter...no dramas at all. Hmm...I could replace the rubber with a al intake pipe to force suction. I think a new lid or ported stock box and bigger snorkels is in order.

So there u go.

Actually,on the subject of the inlet hose,has anyone tried cable ties every 50mm around it?I think just by doing that it feels just a little harder to squash.Havn`t had any issues since.

i run panel filter on my GTR.. its better than pods.. just cause GTR has too much crap and generate far more heat than an RB25 would. street cars i mean. unless u cut and re route air to the LHS of the engine bay its pointless.

having said that my brother just put on a DRIFT pod on his GTT. it sounds harder. doesnt feel quicker than the airbox.. and gives a gay drone noise at 1500rpm.

we measured the surface arear of a Trust mushroom pod we have at home and it is larger than a panel filter. not to mention the equal distance between funnel and filter substance.. wher as a panel filter is flat and the closes point is the LHS of the panel filter. so u would have different pressure rates on the sides of the filters unlike a pod which is more even.. do u guys follow?

i would rather an ARC AIRbox than a pod or stock panel filter..

thats what I was gonna suggest, run a steel pipe to the box, Im going to try this on my new setup and see how it goes

    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.

I know @Pac previously posted about a carplay/android auto adapter he installed which used the AUX input, and @V35_Paul put in one of the Tesla style units that replace both screens. I also decided to add a HD USB drive recorded at the same time and the unit also supports an aftermarket reverse cam (if you don't want to retain factory) and also AV in and HDMI out It looks much worse than it is, in fact in was genuinely all plug and play (no custom wiring at all).     • That still isn't a lot to go on. I don't have a Y50 Fuga Head Unit wiring diagram. I can say that a lot of nissans of that age shared head unit plugs, so if you are in Australia something like this would probably help: https://aerpro.com/app091# You plug that into the car loom, then either plug the head unit ISO into that (if it has ISO), or you buy and ISO adapter harness that you wire in. Bit of stuffing around, but once you have ISO its easy to change things in future.

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
