I don't see the need that you would have to say that you wouldn't want to deal with these companies. Sure, if you think that Speedworks are good then say so, but without any real first hand experience you say they shouldn't see other companies, that is just stupid.

If I told everyone the rumors about some of the tuning house in Perth then we wouldn't be able to believe anyone. I suggest you say the good experiences you've had with companies but keep the virtual experiences for PM, if anyone wants your opinion.

Im not telling rumours, these are real experiences, maybe not of myself, but of people i speak to, or work i have seen after it was completed..

theres good and bad, why can't we say both..

If you've had bad experiences then let people know by PM, otherwise we can become a forum to bag companies. If for instance the guys at Speedworks build an engine that blowesup down at the track, do you want them known for that, or the fact that they rebuilt is for free.

All stories will have two sides, and to just say bad things without knowing the other side makes it like name calling.

I'm glad you have had good experiences with some of these people, that's great, but I could tell a number or stories with people who weren't so impressed, it doesn't help to clarify to the other members who to choose.

In the end they will make a decision based on what people have said and who they trust, I don't think it is constructive to add coments about who you don't think are good, or we'll end up ruling out everyone. It's not whether a company makes a stuff-up, they all do, it's how they go about fixing them.

Bwahahaha:lol:

You go girls.

Both Denver and Paul are right and wrong .

Now kiss and make up before this gets too serious and we all start a slanging match.

I too have been to , had work done by and spoken to other good friends who also have had work done by all the shops mentioned plus more.

I can say that between myself and friends we have had good and bad work done by all those said shops and I think every tuner, performance repairer and service tech have good and bad days.

A lot of it is due to customer attitude and sometimes unrealistic expectations.

Have a talk to them , discuss what you want and if it sounds like B/S , go somewhere else.

I do agree that we keep the less favourable comments about any particular shops off the open forum ( as per Pranks rules ).

We don't need lawsuits here.

Cheers

Ken

I agree Ken and wish no bad feelings between XRW and myself, I haven't met him in person so I don't want to get my ass kicked if he is a big guy.

What you say is what I was trying to Ken, but you did it with some tack, unlike me. I hope we are all friends.

Adrian Perth, I have met a couple of lads who are running an R32 GTR which was built by SST and was putting down over 640rwhp - reliably - this after they had been using the services of one of the tuning shops in XRW's 'go see' list but had been having problems with them- they personally had only bad things to say about the shop in XRW's 'go see' list and were full of praise for SST.

Although XRW has had some bad experiences, I have never heard a bad word about SST before and have seen an example of some excellent work - also there was a car they helped put together with Per4manz that has featured heavily in performance car mags - you may have seen it, its a supra with a cobra paint job.

XRW - you stated:

'id sugest you actually research some more before listening to hear say' followed by (in the same post),

'As i said earlier, i tell people to go to workshops based on what people tell me they have experience'

THIS IS HEARSAY - do you go to the Jimmy Swaggart shool of human behaviour? "do as I say, not as I do"?

If you haven't experienced it personally - it's hearsay

I do realise that you are new to this forum, and have something to contribute, but lets keep it within the guidelines please - for the sake of everyone:)

Its been interesting reading all your arguments about tuning shops. All I can comment on is my personal experience.

In my dealings with SST, I am ready to back Paul up on its reputation. They take care in looking after the car and its owner, and yes they do keep their bookings.

Steve is a good bloke and the others around like Grant are always ready to chip in with some advise.

Don't ever forget that tuning shops are there to give "expert" advise and workmanship to your car. At the end of the day, the decision is in your hands as the owner of the vehicle. If the garage decides that X is a reliable package and you decide to go ahead and do Y then its your perogative if your car dies, but please don't flame the garage.

Just my 2 cents.....

I seem to recall Anthonys car going pop at SST.. :P

Eitherway I support XRW i've known him for years and he DOES know his stuff, he's not a netparrot who reads something and takes it as the word of the bible. Speedworks cost more yes, but the quality of work is exceptional. I also have had Race Torque work on my old ute(brakes/mini ****pit installs etc). While i can't be bothered reading most of the replies i've seen the slinging match between gts-t and xrw. Both of you will have differing opinions good on you, agree to disagree as the majority of budget enthusiasts(which is most people here) don't need to see constant badgering. Give your advice and let them make the final decision.

Learn more about how your own car works, so you can bring that knowledge to the requests you make of tuners. This knowledge will help give you the power to tell the tuner what to do and how to do it. Most will take this kind of direction on board, if they don't then go elsewhere. It helps you shop around and save money.

Bottom line guys is that ALL the named tuners do enough work that is satifactory to excellent to see them still doing alot of business.

I'd ike to see guys like A1 and Chriss Mills get more into 'imports', they run rings around there 'jap specialists' when it comes to the basics of quality engine building and fabrication not to mention value for money.

I'm with you rev210..... I' LOVE to know the most about my car as I can. hence my n00b timing questions earlier.

It makes for a much more enjoyable purchase, doing stuff yourself.

pffft.... getting "experts" to install boost gauges/bleed valves... I don't know WHY people do it....

Rev has basically hit the nail on the head, the trick is to read up about what you want done, you don't have to spend hours researching if you don't want to or have the time but atleast get a good grasp of the facts..

in the case of windind up the boost and timing a few simple things like..

how much boost is safe

will the turbo(s) handle the extra boost over a prolonged period of time

what sort of gains should be expected and if it comes in way over or under the expected figures why

will the fuel system cope

how much timing is really needed

do i have a good enough intercooler setup to cope with it

if you arm yourself with questions like that, look for the answers and feel that in your mind you have a good idea of whats required you can go shopping, if you hear answer that seem right of left field when it comes to what you have written down, your not at the right shop..

and sorry to anyone if i have offended them by naming there favorite workshop as somewhere not to go, im not trying to put anyone out of business, i just hate it when people who know that questionable work has occured and has dealt with them or seen the results of work that wasn't done as expected or it all goes bang in a big way don't actually say it, and just instead recomend them as someone to go see, i say what i say so when people ask me for an hounest opinion, they get one, as like most people here, im not cashed up to my eye balls and i hate to see people who don't have a pile of cash to begin with, suddenly need to rebuild a motor because a tuner wound up the boost, added some timing and took out some fuel..

and some of the work ive seen done to cars that have gone to another workshop to be sorted would make people cringe..

XRW,

I agree that everyone should have a good grasp on the basics of the mods which they plan on doing to there cars. I arm myself with the facts then ask questions of the tuners, if I don't get satisfactory answers then I'll go elsewhere.

Whenever large amounts of money and cars are involved there will be some conflicts between tuning houses and clients, it is the nature of the business. We all have good and bad experiences with people and it is understandable that you would want to be honest in your opinion, but we need to leave that for private discussions and not an open forum.

I have a number of shops that I have used, and wouldn't recommend, and if someone asks me personnaly then I'm more than happy to tell them my opinion.

I loo forward to your contribution on some of the technical threads in the forum.

guys...

it's been said before, and just accept it: there are good AND bad rumours / stories / experiences about every tuning shop

either the best idea is to do a consensus OR make up your own mind by trying them out

I've never dealt with speedworks, I've heard both good and bad things (on this board and in the real world), but at the same time I've heard the same stuff about all the other dyno's ... noone can get around getting a blemish on their rep

people may go to a dyno, get a good 'experience', become loyal to that dyno and put down other ones, I don't know if this is true, but IMHO I'd go for one of the big guns as they're going to know their stuff and have the equip

I've been to SST, I had a good experience, good for me I'll go back there

should I have gone to speedworks I no doubt would have had the same experience (as I was searching for a problem in the car, not a wank figure) ... I'd have absolutely no quarms about using speedworks in the future though

there's no big deal here, choose who you want and stop bagging other tuners

*end rant*

btw, this isn't by any means aimed at anyone and I don't mean to offend anyone, I only read the last page of the thread and put it in before things get out of control :D

XRW,

I've seen tuning guys I respect make some very silly mistakes too. Things like spending two days fixing everything (and chargng for it) that wasn't at fault and missing the problem still , which turned out to be a faulty plug lead! Which I found with a test on a multimeter. Fault finding is one job I don't eny, and its one that shows up our humanity, afterall no one is perfect.

PSIKO,

Nothing to see here, just move along.

Yeah, we have decided that we have different opinion's of the best tuner, which we have no problem with, it was just the whole naming thing, which is against forum policy, that got it all fired up.

But I believe life is returning to normal, just look at what JiMiH started.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
