If I bought a car from South Australia, and brought it to victoria, what would be necessary to get it on the road?

It's currently registered until June 2006 in South Australia, but they don't have RWC (I think), and I'm not sure if interstate registrations are transferrable.

As well as compliance, is it different for each state?

I would call up vic roads, but they're closed for cup day :P

Any help is appreciated, thanks :D

Dude.

As far as I know the procedure is as follows-

* Current owner has to fill out a de-registration form and hand in the SA number plates at there local RTA.

* Have the car transported over here either by a truck of drive it back on a permit that can be aquired at VIC Roads.

* Get a Victorian Roadworthy Certificate (RWC)

* Go to VIC Roads and get a registration application form

* Arrange an appointment with your local VIC Roads office to have the vehicle inspected by one of the VIC Roads "esteemed professionals" hahah

* Take the car to VIC Roads office on arranged date along with your registration form and your current RWC

* If all is accepted and the VIC roads people are happy for a change go to the 80 year old lady in the corner and pay her some money whilst she abuses you for driving an imported car.

And there you have it!!!!

I work in a Holden Dealership and have to deal with VIC Roads fark up a fair bit.

Hope all goes well for you buddy

Im not saying its not worth buying dude. If your heart is set on it go ahead and do it. After all, its a Skyline and we are enthusiasts so if you have to go out of your way a little more its no real drama.

From what I have heard VIC roads in dandenong are the worst. I have heard frankston is the way to go for import rego - less hassles

Burwood is the closest one to me.

Problem is, my budget is around 13-14.

The car is 13, then to get it re-regoed and rwc will cost more.

I'll have to speak to the owner and sort something out.

3 Day driving permit is about $70

RWC $70

Approximate spend for RWC repairs $500-700

Vic rego is about $580-600 including plates

Stamp duty @ 4% will be about $450-$500

TOTAL $1670 - $1940

Give or take a few bucks....

So if the car is $13,000 to fit into your budget you will need to be purchasing the car for about $11,330 - $11060 just going off those quick calculations....

My advice for that sort of money would be wait untill one arrives in victoria.... Less hassles and you can inspect the car easier without having to fly over to look at it.

If it was a more expensive car (ie. a GTR R33-34) I would advise you to search outside the VIC border.

Sorry if its not what you wanna hear bro but it probably just wont work out to be fessible for you....

And ontop of it all - INSURANCE :P

the one in geelong i went to see on sunday is very suspicious, has some parts from the update model, others from the older model, its advertised as 1990, but checked the VIN and its an early 88 model.

hmm well at least your on the bill re: parts from different models and stuff. let us know if you need any help. just keep at it and hopefully you find a good one locally rather than interstate, saves lots of extra crap.

my first rego for my car was like 1650 stamp duty was through the roof :P

yeah, i'm glad i took photos of it when i went to check it out because i compared them to other models and lots of it juts didnt seem right.

my s13 was almost 900 all up :D

and i only get 350 back when i cash in my plates

They guy in SA will get money back for his rego when he hands the plates in, you can negotiate that into the price.

But getting a RWC yourself is a bit daunting, when its a car you have already paid for and is probably modified (ie. wont pass rwc).

I was going to do this with a car from NSW, but in the end for me getting the RWC with the car was more important.

hey heath on this subject if the car is already owned by me and registered in nsw and i change it to vic, do i have 2 pay stamp duty again like i did in nsw?

I dont think so. I beleive vic roads can just have it transfered over to Vic rego and just charge a small fee for it.... Best give them a call to confirm though

Kamikaze: no, just standard rego cost ($560odd). You just need to show them your old rego papers & photo id. Also if your NSW rego is still current you can claim a refund from the RTA. They will probably make you get a new VIC licence too ($27odd).

You're supposed to notify them within like 3months of moving here.. however.. there are certain benefits to leaving your rego interstate as long as possible..

James is right.. you do all suck..... this exact thing was covered....... not even a week ago.

:D

    • @dbm7 and @GTSBoy thank you both very much! will give that a shot!
    • Sounds good. Provided the panel is flat/level I'd be happy to start the painting process.  While you are learning, for sure you could do this. Its only paint, you can always sand it all back and start again. Its only your time and money on materials, but while you're learning, really its time and money spent on your education.  Once you know how to do this bodywork and painting, you won't want to waste your time and money on frivolous activities lol.
    • Yep I will use a guide coat after putting filler, I will do it on the whole panel as I'm a beginner so chances I've made quite a few errors. In that photo, I think that was a low spot, I just for example said to pretend it's flat but I will put filler + guide coat after to assess where I'm at. Yep with that picture, the panel is wet as it rained when I took the photo. But all those scratches are completely smooth, I went over it with 240 grit and can't feel it, even with my nail digging into it. I was legit thinking to buy a 2k can and spray primer to see how it turns out but then thought to myself it's going to be a mess doing it haha. Good mention there. Thanks for all that info I think I know what to do next.
    • Prior to laying down the primer, you need to make sure the surface is completely level. For example, based on this picture, I strongly suspect that the areas marked in blue are higher then the area marked in green.  If you spray primer over this entire area, then paint and clear it, the finished result will 100% show the low area. It will stick out like dogs balls. Unfortunately the paint won't magically level out the low areas as you lay it down.  Without seeing it in person, I expect that the green area will need to be filled, then use a guide coat and check that the entire repair area is level with a large sanding block.  With this picture, are you saying that even though you can see the scratches, the panel is in fact completely smooth and flat? If this is the case sure you could prep and paint it as it is.     The picture with the paint you described as blistering, it's hard for me to comment on from the photo alone. It looks like the panel is wet? Dunno, looks strange. Does the panel feel as smooth as glass when you run your hand over it? **** Going back to your question again, generally you would only sand the primer if you made a mistake while laying down the primer.  If the panel is prepped properly and you lay the primer down properly, you should not need to sand the primer.  This wouldn't work - Don't prep the panel. Spray primer and see how it turns out. Sand the areas where the issues appear. Spray more primer and see how it turns out. Sand the areas....... Yeah you'd go round and round in circles getting no where.
    • That's sick, thanks for that, mine has much the same mods on a 400R. I just don't have the heat exchanger yet.   Might be worth a trip down the M1 to Syndey for a tune.
