yeah my 1st car was a vl turbo calais,

if your comparing 4 door examples the vl has cleaner lines,

eg vl little bob tail boot compared to the box arse end of the 31

the calais has little trick features like half pop up lights etc

both 4 door examples handle shit anyways,

motors basically the same

both interiors are on par, (except calais versions much better)

more vls around

you will pat more for a vl

basically it comes down to what shape you like best

1 vote vl

vl calais (T3/4, custom plenum, huge cooler, dump, exhaust hsv17s on it hole sweeeeet)

^my 1st love hehe

lol.. Forget about turbo he's not after turbo. If he was.. R32 or 180sx over the VLT is an easy choice.

Non-Turbo.

R31 in stock form is a more reliable and a slightly better performance package in all aspects. Chassis and acceleration.

  • 3 weeks later...

Go the VL Calais there a beautiful car and when rebuilt run like a dream, RB30turbo with supra 5speed its a cheap reliable car. Plus are able to run reasonable boost putting out good power very fun. Leave out all the kits and crap. Had one that was hot house green over silver with 17" low profile perelli tyres just looked a treat. Will always look better than the R31 and perform pretty much the same.

Dude if it ain't a Turbo Calais forget it! Go the R31...

I just had my VL blow it's head- once again illustrating the issues with VL and the F**king radiator mounted lower than the engine!

I have spent about 2.5k just keeping it on the road in the last year and it goes and blows a head on me!

So- If it ain’t turbo go the R31- less hassle and less attention from the unwanted.

 Seriously any serious car enthusiast wouldn't buy a VL Calais if it wasn't turbo. Just cause your VL is a piece of shit doesnt make the ones the same.

And if you knew what you were doing you wouldnt be replacing the head with the standard head. For $2500 youd be close to gettng rb26head. The R31 and the VL are both over 18 years old so both will need attention to get them looking good again. The other good thing with the VL is there are a lot around for spare parts which you'll never have trouble finding. and when either car is finished, resprayed etc the VL looks ten fold better.

    • I always wonder where the obsession with legal/illegal spacing on number plates in the UK comes from. Because it comes up in comments in every UK-based video I see on youtube. From my point of view all of your plates look a bit odd. Just because there are no markings whatsoever. In Australia we have the state that has to be on it. In Europe you get stamps and state logos. Yours look a bit like a throwaway draft that people then stuck with. And attached with blu tack so that it falls off at the slightest disturbance. Not trying to hate, but it's interesting how things are done in different countries. Do you have to follow a lettering convention when choosing a custom plate?
    • Hybrid sounds like a supercharger... It's half a turbo, with a belt to drive it! Oh wait, they're just called super chargers...
    • It's either an ignition failure or a fuel failure.
    • Before starting any work, we attempted to adjust the tune. However even after adjusting it to certain extremes like completely stopping fuel, it had no effect. What fixed it was removing the Nistune Board and installing the original EPROM instead. This immediately fixed the issue. Everything should have been fine with the Nistune Board installation, so I am unsure why it has caused a problem. The soldered connector is also properly soldered. This worked when I first got the 550cc injectors, before cleaning, but that may have been a coincidence.  We ended up not installing the fuel pump hanger (at least for now). So currently running stock injectors, stock fuel pump, stock fuel pump hanger – Well everything stock except the exhaust. Now I have around €1400 in Nistune, Injectors, and Hanger collecting dust for the time being, perhaps I'll install them in the future. For now I'll enjoy the car as is 😁 Thanks a lot for all your assistance, I really appreciate all the help you have given me.
    • The turbo can’t be the issue. They’re proven to make much much power than you’re making. There is something in the setup that isn’t correct. - has the exhaust got any silly step downs? - what exhaust manifold?
