Hello there,

I am new to this forum, even to the Skyline. I just bought a 95 gts-t with an rb26 conversion. I live in Italy, but the car came from the UK. I drive the car and it just does not feel right. I wanted to know if anybody has doen this engine swap and what should be in the car and what shouldnt.

As I drive the car, it makes a wierd sound, I hear the turbos kicking in, however, they kick in at about 3000rpm, then the rpms shoot from about 4800 all the way to 7000 but no power or torque is being felt, its as if i am stepping on the clutch, boost goes to about 1.6bar, I am reaching 110 km in fifth gear since I feel that if I dont shift, the engine will blow, I had a turbo civic, so I know somewhat how the car should be feeling when the boost kicks in. Just this car does not feel like it has power.

Also, the engine looks like it is missing components, and there are various cables that are not connected to anything. I will post some pics of the engine bay so that you guys with alot more knowledge of this car can help me out. Please, I need help and there is no mechanic here that know about the skylines.

lol. Sure you don't have a dead clutch? It rather sounds like it is slipping. The weird sound could also be the clutch. Dunno, i'm not really an expert, but i'm definately not a fan of conversions like that.

The other sound it makes is when the turbos kickin, it sounds like gears grinding when I shift gears and the boost releases pressure, I dont believe that I have a bov and an external waste gate. Do you guys recommend this upgrade?

THe 2 plugs are for the front and rear oxygen sensors for an rb26. the pipe i assume is for the standard BOVs which have probably been replaced with aftermarket, have a look along the intercooler piping for new BOVs.

Internal wastegate is fine for standard turbos.

If the 02 sensors are not connected you might have an aftermarket computer that doesnt use them (have a look in the passenger footwell). Or if you have the standard computer there might be an issue with the wiring and they left the sensors off.

Either way without 02 sensors you will get very poor fuel economy around town.

If the clutch is going out, what kind of clutch should I replace it with? I hae the rb26 engine with an rb25 clutch and tranny

Some one had mentioned to me that a double or triple clutch would suffice using the same tranny. Is this true.

1.6bar is pretty high, so i'd imagine that it has a front-mount, new turbo, and so on... With that sort of power, you'd probably have to go for a clutch with very high clamping pressure. The twin and triple plate designs usually have a very strong pressure plate, so it could be the way to go. The downside is that these clutches are usually button-type (brass or ceramic). If you go that way, and it's your daily driver, see if you can source a kit that is a CUSHIONED button clutch. It gives the feel of a non-button, but mechanically it is on or off like a button clutch.

I finally got to drive the car for some distance, pushed the car somewhat and drove the car around some good curves here in Italy pretty fast. When I arrived to my destination, I herd a weird noise comming from underneath of the car. Close to the rear wheels, it sounded like a high pitched noise constantly on It did not turn off until the car turned off. I have heard it before when I turn it on, however, this time it sounded louder. What could it be? Thank you for your help on the clutch issue, I have ordered a nismo twin plate clutch. Hopefully I should feel the power then..

    • Sounds good.  I don't 100% understand what your getting at here. When you say, "I keep seeing YouTube videos where people have new paint and primer land on the old clearcoat that isn't even dulled down" do you mean this - there is a panel with factory paint, without any prep work, they paint the entire panel with primer, then colour then clear?  If that's what you mean, sure it will "stick" for a year, 2 years, maybe 3 years? Who knows. But at some stage it will flake off and when it does it's going to come off in huge chunks and look horrific.  Of course read your technical data sheet for your paint, but generally speaking, you can apply primer to a scuffed/prepped clear coat. Generally speaking, I wouldn't do this. I would scuff/prep the clear and then lay colour then clear. Adding the primer to these steps just adds cost and time. It will stick to the clear coat provided it has been appropriately scuffed/prepped first.  When you say, "but the new paint is landing on the old clearcoat" I am imagining someone not masking up the car and just letting overspray go wherever it wants. Surely this isn't what you mean?  So I'll assume the following scenario - there is a small scratch. The person manages to somehow fill the scratch and now has a perfectly flat surface. They then spray colour and clear over this small masked off section of the car. Is this what you mean? If this is the case, yes the new paint will eventually flake off in X number of years time.  The easy solution is to scuff/prep all of the paint that hasn't been masked off in the repair area then lay the paint.  So you want to prep the surface, lay primer, then lay filler, then lay primer, then colour, then clear?  Life seems so much simpler if you prep, fill, primer, colour then clear.  There are very few reasons to go to bare metal. Chasing rust is a good example of why you'd go to bare metal.  A simple dent, there is no way in hell I'm going to bare metal for that repair. I've got enough on my plate without creating extra work for myself lol. 
    • Hi, Got the membership renewal email but haven't acted yet.  I need to change my address first. So if somebody can email me so I can change it that would be good.    
    • Bit of a similar question, apprently with epoxy primer you can just sand the panel to 240 grit then apply it and put body filler on top. So does that basically mean you almost never have to go to bare metal for simple dents?
