Comparing Skylines R32 R33 And R34

Recommended Posts

hi all as you may know from previous posts im looking for my next skyline daily driver. I was almost set on the r33 until test driving a r34 and using its sports auto trans, then it was a all in all again with the 32 falling behind and the 33 and 34 almost matched.

so heres a run down of what the car will be..... auto and non turbo pretty simple im on my P's so no turbo and I have a bad left knee so no manual.

now heres were im at so far..... r33 I like the exterior id have to say the most of the 3 and don't mind the size isn't enourmus but is still roomy with lots of space, im only a small fella but I like my room and feel the 32 is to confining for me. the 34 cabin size does trail up the rear of the 33 but I feel the 33 has more room of the 2.

the 34 exterior is a close match to the 33 and In my opinion the 33 only wins as it has more/better options for aftermarket bodykits wereas I don't like the look of the majority of 34 kits and have only found 1 or 2 I would actually use on my car. the 34 has the better looking interior than the 33 even when customized the 34 wins in this area. also the 34 has a sports auto trans which is a win in my case.

so the 32 seems to be straddaling along, I see this to suit more of a track car than daily driver/cruiser think il leave the 32 for until I update my track car from a 31 haha but I still wont count it out yet it may surprise me on inspections and test drives.

the 33 and 34 are fairly matched making it a really hard decision.and im starting to grow to the thought of a 34 in my driveway im sure I could find a decent kit and they are questionably newer and lower ks but I still have a place in my heart for the 33 always have always will I was one of the few that welcomed the new design 33 over the basic 32 even though most others shunned it due to its size.

33 and 34 are also very close weight distribution I think 33 is 55/45 split and 34 is 60/40 if I remember correctly.

now if I could find a way to fit the interior from the 34 into the 33 mainly dash cluster and console but any other bits that are interchangeable will be a bonus. and if I can bolt the 34 sports auto up to the 33 then I could have the best of both worlds.

so being as the 33 is a rb25de and the 34 is a rb25de neo they are practically the same engine and are the same block so I don't see any reason the 34 sports auto wouldn't fit up to the 33 exept maybe clearance wise and making it fit but it should bolt up. correct me if im wrong people.

so ive started this thread to gather as much information between the 3 series to help me make the right decicion on my next purchase. I understand that different people have different opinions and mine may be different to others but im asking your opinions on the matter, if you say keep away from 33s there boats that's your opinion doesn't mean I wont get a 33 just means that someone prefers a 32 or 34 over a 33. any pros and cons on the series would be greatly appreciated. ive red the comparison specs posted on here back in 08 and am sure opinions have changed since then.

so post up our opinion and what you think of the 3 series, answer any of my questions if you can. I know your input will be great help in determining the right beast for me.

You don't like manual?

Nathan's left knee is cactus Chris.

Any of those 3 which...

* is not a tired chassis

* has no rust

* is a nice body and paint job

* has a well maintained engine

* running gear and suspension is easy to bring up to scratch

...is the one I'd grab

yeah its not I don't like manual its I can only drive it for a short period of time so it wouldn't suit a daily driver.

I think im narrowed my decision down to either a r33 gts or r34 25gt. I like the 33 they feel roomy I feel comfortable sitting in one. ive only looked at 34's haven't really sat in one or been on a good drive but from looks wise they seem to be just as roomy as the 33.

im starting to lean towards the 34 as the prices have reduced quite a lot in the past 3 years and they are averaging the same cost as a 33 in similar condition. the 34 also being a newer car and the majority of them being lower ks kinda takes a step ahead. I also like the fact of having a sports automatic in the 34 so I can still shift gears myself when I wanna have a bit of fun. wereas the 33 does not have this its just a basic auto. I also like the looks of the interior of the 34 over the 33 its more inviting not just black or grey plastic in your face like the 33.

so im leaning towards the 34 gunna go look at a few and have a few test drives of a few different ones to see how they average out in drivability.

id still like a 33 and I can have the best of both worlds if the following parts from the 34 are interchangeable into the 33......

1) sports auto transmission (I don't see a reason it wouldn't bolt up the 33 is rb25de and the 34 rb25de neo)

2) the dash gauge cluster and center console in fact any interior components I can swap over

if I can swap the above listed parts from the 34 into the 33 then il be buying the 33 hands down and have the best of both worlds

The trans will bolt up.

To make it work electronically would be very difficult. The wiring is different between the two. So you would likely have to swap the loom , and trans controller (which might be in the ecu? Not sure, don't care!) All rb trans bolt on to any rb. Bolting on is the easy bit.

yeah it would be getting it running though and i think your correct and trans controller is in the ecu with the 34 but wouldn't a aftermarket ecu and/or remapping solve that issue. im starting to lean towards the 34 ive found 2 bodykits id be happy with and like the interior although am disappointed i cant put my momo steering wheel on as the 34 is airbag steering wheel.

also im abit confused on hicas now i understand the 34 has it and some 33's and i know it has somethingto do with the handling/suspention in the rear but what exactly is it what exactly does it do and how does it work??? what are the benefits/disadvantages of hicas (pros & cons)? and what is a hicas lock and hw does it work? is there a way to press a button and have hicas active or non active like a diff lock in a 4wd or is it a once attached a lock its locked take lock off its unlocked

just a update as I had another idea...... if I get the r33 gts and I put the rb25de neo engine from a na r34 in it with the sports auto from the 34 and use the 34 computer or a after market computer and possibly r34 wiring loom for the engine would this all work properly together???? all my objective is is to have a sports automatic gearbox in a r33 as I can put aftermarket steering wheel ect. if this cant be done and work properly im happy to settle with the r34 but I like the 33 body better

I understand that you can't have annual due to knee.

The easiest option is buy whatever car and get a full manual valve body put in the trans. Then use a b and m ratchet shifter. Gearshifts are instant. Will be heaps cheaper than an aftermarket trans controller.
