    Yeah that was wierd, I bought from the old site and then there were wheels. There aren't too many US retailers that will ship direct to Aus. I will PM you with other places you should be and you will reward me with free stuff because I like free stuff and occasionally think about my BloodRage that went in the bin and shed a single tear.

    Someone's been searching themselves. Actually at that price on the 5970 I could buy one and resell it here as second hand and still make $200. But nah the distributors aren't gouging at all.

    http://www.tilatech.com/ is where I've imported stuff from before and they were pretty good, so random that they sell rims now as well. There are a couple of others or you need a third party if you want to purchase from newegg as they don't ship to Australia and don't accept international payments. Made out of the same stuff, possibly similar panels.

    A computer. You don't have the budget for a specialist machine for your intended purpose. You could get an older version of one of the workstation cards but in your case I'd get an i7 with 6GB ram so if you do get a workstation card later it will be worth it.

    It would cost you around $700 to get a 5970 from the US, prices are a little inflated over here.

    5970 @1GHz performs about the same as GTX295 in Quad-SLi And Thermaltake armour, seriously.

    CS4 is one of those special cases where consumer and workstation cards will accelerate it. The truth is that workstation and consumer cards are VERY similar and it's merely the software behind them (drivers) and the support from developers that lets the manufacturers charge massive amounts for cards meant for business.

    If you're not gaming at all a good consumer graphics card is pointless, they don't support hardware acceleration for 3D rendering apps in general. Probably a 5750 or 5770 would be the go for good price / performance at the lower end of the market but you could go pretty cheap and get more CPU grunt instead as that will be doing most of the work without a workstation type card.

    I reckon I could spec a $5-10k one that would be pretty sweet high end ram drives, multiple workstation GPUs, 7 pci-e slot mobo, i7 extreme, 12+ GB DDR3 2200 MHz RAM I need some alone time.

    Budget is a much better guide to a system build than 'I want it to do this stuff'. The only part of your list of uses that will change the hardware is if you want hardware acceleration for Maya (what version?) and etc, listing what the etc is is probably a good idea as different programs can use different hardware acceleration. FYI you are then looking at workstation cards which, for a recent one, will be $1-2k by itself.

    Limitation of consumer 32bit OS, you can hack Win7 32 to run over 3GB.
